It’s not a dominant running game because teams are scheming to make Wisconsin beat them with the pass.   Key on Taylor and the running game.  Not a difficult formula.   Coan isn’t dynamic enough as a QB to keep teams honest.  In crunch time he’s been dreadful.  The pick today was a back breaking play.

Let’s hope like hell Mertz doesn’t get disgruntled and transfer.

I don't buy it.  This is a team the Badgers were favored by over 30.  You are at the goal line and I don't care if twice it was given to the FB.  If your running game is dominant (as in dominant o-line and some speculating Taylor may be the finest RB UW has ever had), you HAVE GOT to cash it in.

It's not even like there were a lot of "only" 3 yard gains.  There were one yard losses.  One to two yard gains.  I don't care if the likes of an Illinois is emphasizing stoping the run, a dominant running game should produce more than that.

It’s not some new play to call the FB dive in short yardage situations.  If you watch or scout UW it’s one of their tendencies.  Not to mention Taylor’s penchant for fumbling which is why he isn’t given more of those opportunities.

The only way a 30+ point dog wins a game like this are miscues.  The Taylor fumble and Coan INT were major plays in the game given when and how they happened.

Taylor’s fumble likely took points off the board as it happened on the 25 yard line of Illinois.

What made the Coan pick so damaging was it happened near midfield.  All Illinois had to do was go like 25 yards and salt away the clock (which they did).  Had the Badgers simply ran the ball and then punted I think they probably win that game.  Having to go 50-60 yards is much different than 25 yards.

And yes, certainly our kicker missing a 37 yarder didn’t help matters.

Total up those 3 plays and it probably swung the game by 9 points.  Maybe more if they end up getting a TD on the Taylor drive.

"All Illinois had to do was go like 25 yards and salt away the clock(which they did)." Illinois went those 25 yards due to piss poor tackling efforts. One on the part of Hicks, who tried to stop the RB from advancing by not wrapping up the RB. Hicks used a shoulder block at least twice in the game without wrapping up the RB and in each situation the RB blew through Hick's shoulder tackling lack of effort for big yardage. The last time for setting up the game winning FG. This is not what you want to have happened when OSU is next on the schedule.

Now watch the Badgers go out, and kick the pants out of  OSU.

I hope you are right, but I think next week is a blowout for OSU.

Beating OSU is hard enough. Beating OSU in their stadium, after playing like this, is next to impossible. Our O Line will have to play a lot better than they did vs Illinois for Coan and Taylor to get back to what we feel is a normal outing for them.

Taylor was already being downgraded for the Heisman contention, in the sports press. This loss vs Illinois may have sealed his fate there. There is a slim chance, IMO, that he can regain his footing with a solid performance vs OSU next week. For that to happen, UW's O Line will have to open holes for him more than they did against Illinois. No easy task against OSU.

But it would be a Wisconsin type development to go on the road when no one thinks they win and play well.

I will give you that, Tschmack! Anything is possible with the Badgers. Maybe Chryst was holding back some plays so OSU scouts wouldn't be able to prepare for them. We'll see. I'll be rooting for Bucky to win and play better in all areas for the OSU game.

This is going to be interesting for UW the rest of the year.  Does this loss deflate them?  And they end up in another middle of the road bowl game?  Or do they get better and end up in a big New Years day game?

I don't think we will find out where they are at until after the O$U game.  I personally think UW will get throttled in that game.  But as others have said when you think they will crap the bed again they suddenly start playing well.
