Jealous.

I can see the potential upside with the first 2 picks for the Pack.  But that 3rd pick, it seems like at best that guy is used as an H-back type.  He'll fill a role, but it almost seems like there's no chance he could ever be an upper tier TE with his ordinary size and measurables.  A guy like Delanie Walker was only 6' 2" but he had much better speed than the TE the Pack picked.  I suppose he can be a nice complimentary player, but you wish you could find a guy with the potential to be great and he just doesn't appear to have much chance of that.

Just a very very weird draft for the Pack with no WRs from what supposedly was the deepest WR draft ever and the greatest need for the Pack.  It just seems shocking that it wasn't addressed.  Sure, they could find someone in round 5 or later but now you're getting into rounds where every guy has some warts that they have to work through.

How in the world did they get FOUR 3rd rounders?  They'll definitely be in the mix to win the AFC this year and put to bed the memory of last year's disappointment.

Gutey tonight on his draft and where the offense is going:  "I think Matt wants to run the ball and have the pass game after that."  And "With some of  the run game and play pass, we as a scouting staff we will continue to acquire players that fill that.

Makes sense.  Aside from Adams, there isn't anybody on the roster to make the focus of a passing game.  Remember how the Packers coaches kept on saying, with the lack of WR production, what great blockers their WR's are.  This is the new Packers identity, with a $30 million QB reduced to handing off and throwing only 20 times a game.

I don’t buy that for a second. If the Packers want to run the ball, it only makes the whole passing game better. The Packers were a middle of the road team in ball control a season ago. A better, more dynamic running game creates mismatches- and that wins football games. Rodgers with a running game is more dangerous than 5 wide any day.

I was hoping we'd nab Duverney in the third round, but right on cue, the Ravens took him two spots in front of our pick. Now, the highest rated WR left on the board is Proche from SMU. I hope Gute can work magic today, as we passed on WR, OT, DT and ILB, in the first two days. I did not even have Degaurra listed as a top TE prospect.

Rodgers won't have time to throw the ball, as he will succumb to the blitz and pass rush coming from the right side of our O Line. We can not run the ball if we are playing from behind, either. I like our run game, thanks to Jones' ability, but we cannot run the ball, to the right, without blocking from the O line men there. So, all of our run plays will be designed to go to the left. Nothing like telegraphing our moves! Today's picks in the draft had better address OT, WR, DT and ILB.

It's not about filling......ahhh fuck it.

I haven't been this disappointed with a draft since Toby Mandarich

Were you disappointed with Mandarich  on draft night?  Or only after pre-seaso began?

Sooo disappointed. Do we want to beat 49er musclemen (who completely bullied us both games)? Is the SB the goal anymore? Then bench players won't help this year.

We need beef on D. 49ers ran for 187 yards before getting touched. Our run D is non existent against them. And KC's O is even better.

But the loathsome media feeds the crap Rodgers (20th ranked QB since 2018- behind trubinsky) "deserves" weapons  instead of our glaring needs- D studs. 9ers will just cream us again.

3 offensive picks with the 1st 4 picks is sickenly bad when Lancaster (313 lbs) and Lowry (296 lbs) are lightweight jokes. Where's the Nose? Clark is 313.  martinez is gone and the other ILB is trash.

4 of the D front 7 is gone or junk. But gotta draft O with the 1st 4 picks. Sigh

If his grades are shit we'll find out in the next season or 2... than the failure is on Murphy, IMO.

Personally, I think Gutekunst knows what he's doing. It's why he has advanced in his job througout his career.

The COVID situation has put everything on the tape evaluations since there was little opportunity for up close and in person analysis. This years draft grades (in 2 to 3 years) will really say a lot about which staffs have it or not.

Me too. Their front office is solid.

Yeah it’s a big time “wait and see” draft. If we end up with Patrick Mahomes, Derek Henry, and George Kittle then we’re set for a decade basically. It’s hard to get behind this draft because of how much it differs from “expert” analysis we as fans rely on, but it’s been a really unusual pre-draft process and it’s just as possible Gute fucking nailed this draft. Won’t know for a while though.

I loved the Mandarich pick--I was happy when home town boy Jerry Tagge was picked and I thought Jamal Reynolds and Justin Harrell would be stars..so yes my evaluation skills are at the top of the list of why I am not an NFL scout...and I have to admit-I like all three of these players (which doesn't bode well considering my track record) just not at the points where they were chosen: with so many potential needs available and  waving their hands to be picked.

My apologies for repeating myself--but what makes these choices so scary is to review the 2018 draft (yes, yes it is too early to judge) and see that after an excellent first round pick of Alexander, Gute went on to  badly miss on 10 picks--players so bad that they would struggle  in the CFL..that is a remarkable task to accomplish...but he did it!

Draft day.

I wanted Barry Sanders or Derrick Thomas

I actually wanted Deion Sanders because I was 19 years old and thought he was cool. To be fair, I liked Mandarich second best.

1. Aikman, 2. Mandarich, 3. Barry Sanders, 4. Derrick Thomas, 5. Deion Sanders

There are close parallels to the 2003 NBA draft.

1. LeBron, 2. Darko Mlicic, 3. Carmelo Anthony, 4. Chris Bosh, 5. D. Wade

4 of 5 picks were HOFers and #2 was a bust.

Saw an article predicting that because of the lack of congregating by teams staffs / personnel people, there would be less consensus among teams on prospects and many of the "big boards" would be really off. Seems like in retrospect that we were one of the only teams that valued players differently than the consensus. I marvel at NFL.com's rankings. In their top 50 players, 47 of them were taken in the first 50 picks! They had Love at #50, Dillon #126, Deguara #206

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/...ed-on-value-and-fit/

26. Packers, QB Jordan Love, Utah State

Grade:D. Terrible move by the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers told me last summer he wants to play until he's 40. They needed a receiver. They needed defensive help. Sitting behind Rodgers will do Love well, but not going to do the Packers well. You're on the cusp of getting to a Super Bowl, get Rodgers some help.

62. Packers: RB AJ Dillon, Boston College

Grade: C+. Explosive train. Insane contact balance. Just enough wiggle to make one defender miss on a run. Running style could shorten his NFL career. Maybe Aaron Jones insurance?

94. Packers: TE Josiah Deguara, Cincinnati

Grade:C-. Hard-working H-back type who had flashes of athleticism as a receiver. Some blocking prowess. But nothing spectacular about his game.

I'm praying that three years from now I have to come back and eat crow over this draft, but right now it's looking like ship. Especially that third round pick....

I feel about the same way as you.  The first 2 picks are interesting but there is high bust potential with Love.  The 3rd pick, he'll likely be a contributor, but his ceiling is so low, at best he looks like an average H-Back type player with just about zero chance of ever being an elite TE.  That's the kind of guy you might want to pick in the 5th round or lower.

Hopefully the Pack finds some gems in the later rounds, but the 1st 3 picks have been just flat out bizarre.  I'll root for them all, but it's likely none of those 3 guys start this season unless someone gets hurt.
