ILB/MLB is such a weird position these days.  Every great defense has a great ILB/MLB yet teams just don't seem to value the position.  If Walker works out, I think having him and Campbell in the middle could not just turn this defense into a top 5 unit, but eliminate those "lapses" we've gotten so used to the last 10 years.  No more stuffing them on first and second downs only to allowing a 20 yard play on 3rd and 10.

When it was time to make his college decision official, Walker put on a Tennessee hat. Then, he chucked it across the room and unzipped his jacket to show his Georgia gear. It wasn’t one of his finest moments, he admits. β€œTo be honest with you, I hate talking about it,” Walker said before the 2019 season kicked off. β€œBut I know it’s going to be something that’s brought up the rest of my life, just about. Looking back on it, I think it was very immature of me doing that.”

Good luck getting that 20 yard play on 3rd and 10 against our secondary.

Last year, we saw these snap counts on defense:

O.Burks     19 %
K. Barnes   49 %
H. Black      24 %

All of those snaps would be replaced and upgraded with Quay Walker
Less 3 Safety nickel in '22-  which is part of why they didn't draft high at Safety

More 2-4-5 nickel with talented players vs both run and pass -
Makes it much harder for the offense to "catch" you in a run/pass package and then gash ya. Great pick and they've been on this guy for awhile.

I think Gute rolled a 7 with this one

So are you trying to tell me the Packers reached for those 2 and drafted them too early?  πŸ˜€

Not at all. After reading post draft stuff from a lot of "draft experts" the grades on the 2 1st rouinders were all over the place.  Just thought it was interesting that the Cowpokes had them rated where they did.  No over reach by the Packers as far as I'm concerned, not that it means shit.

One of the most exciting things about Walker is he should be able to drop and not suck, which would be kind of a new trend at ILB in Green Bay. Without much money to pursue backups the dime likely features one of these guys:

Best bet for 4th corner: Shemar Jean-Charles, yeah, the guy who only got 37 snaps on defense and allowed every pass thrown against him to be a completion last year. That's not good even for a mid-round rookie.

Best bet for 3rd safety: Vernon Scott, who made a total of one play on defense in 89 snaps last year. Bryan Cook at #59 would have looked very good.

Maybe they can stay in nickel more and be more well-rounded where they all but had to go dime in previous years.

big show (gary ellerson + leroy) seem to think 7 will be the replacement for pass rush and be more of a z. smith rather than a true ilb...so blitzer and pass rush.  I never really saw that as the main role, interesting football guys see that...

The Packers hope, and it's a HIGH hope, that Walker becomes Micah Parsons 2.0

So essentially a hybrid ILB/OLB who can get to the QB. And it's in part why they also went with Wyatt as the other 1st rounder.

Clark-Wyatt-Reed-Lowry as big ass bodies up front should  open lanes for Walker and Campbell to get through. Certainly Walker's ability and pure speed will get him east-west to chase down TE's and RB's. They also think he has that Parson's type ability to get to the QB as well.
