I was aware of the streak. But none of the UDFAs have looked good this year. That thought was confirmed in the Packers.com inbox. I would rather have someone who deserves it rather than just try to keep a streak alive.
I don't see what Willis brings to the QB room. Seneca Wallace Part Deux? Stay healthy, Jordan Love, stay healthy!
PS. Unless they see him [Willis] in some set running plays in certain situations.
@ilcuqui posted:Wow. A total project QB. Not an ideal backup, IMO. Think they try to stash Clifford on the PS now (advantage over Pratt being a year in the system, not unimportant in the QB room).
My feeling exactly. Willis has shown nothing so far in the NFL. He didn't cost much, but the #1 backup? Yowser.
@Pakrz posted:Wow. Didn't realize GB has been on a streak since 2004. I think that's a direct byproduct of Gute drafting so well over the past few years that there just aren't spots available for the UDFAs at the bottom of the roster.
The best I can recall, signing UFDAs was begat during the ROTTT.
At that time, I think it was more from necessity to 'balance' the salary cap.
Once we hit the lottery with Shields, it seemed swinging for the fences became a yearly thing.
It would make sense that Gutey followed that same path. Maybe not from necessity so much, but the potential for ROI is hard to pass up.
I know it's been discussed before, but don't remember the specifics of what effect NIL may/may not have on UFDA selections.
I think Chewie (Chmura) made the club from the tub. 😁🤭
Would like to see King and Welch on the PS.
Pretty sure the 1 tackle was during regular season for his career. We don't keep stats for pre-season games....BUT he needed that to make the team most likely.
The solution to all this is just to go for 2 all the time and go for any 4th down inside the 40.
It will be interesting to see what the final straw was with Carlson. If I was the head coach and wanted to see how he'd do under pressure, I'd have told them that if he makes that 32 yarder in the final preseason he's on the team, but if he misses it he's gone. Maybe he wasn't told that, but that's probably essentially what happened. If you can't make the equivalent of an XP in perfect conditions, then are you really going to trust a guy to hit a 45 yarder to win a playoff game at Lambeau?

He's got good size. Now, let's see what he does with the opportunity.
1. Well I sure hope MarShawn Lloyd pans out for us, because we sure didn’t get a chance to see him much.
2. I hope Welch makes it to the Practice squad.
3. I don’t think Greg Joseph should feel too comfortable yet. I don’t know much about the other kickers who will be available after all the cuts, but …

Here's one potential Kicker.
Greg Joseph sucks unless he's going 100% this season.

Kuhn mentioned on his radio show the other day that once he started getting repeated stingers they just kept coming back.

I sure as hell don't trust Joseph to hit a 45 yarder in Lambeau to win a playoff game, that I know.
You just cannot miss a 32 yd FG. You just can't.
Bro was on the left hash mark and he sliced it wide right. How the fuck do you even do that?! That's actually difficult to do. 😂
Bad hold?
@ammo posted:Bad hold?
He's been working with the same center & holder for months.
This isn't the Patriots or Vikings who aren't expecting to make the playoffs. This team has lofty goals. Doing things like winning the division and winning playoff games isn't going to happen when your kicker is historically bad.
Plus you're right .....I don't trust Joseph at all. Trust is earned. Joseph....You ain't built up no points boy!!
He better not miss a single kick unless the Packers are up by like 30 and he misses an XP. Other than that.....keep about 3 kickers on speed dial
@michiganjoe posted:Packers LB Arron Mosby made it.
I think keeping him as an additional LB cost Dubose his spot at WR. I really thought they would keep 7 wr.
Jets kept 7 WR's....at least initially.
Remember.....the roster is a living breathing thing. This ain't over yet. Changes can and WILL be made constantly throughout the league.
Carlson was probably more likely to hit a 45 yarder than make an extra point. Dude missed 5 of them last year.
As for the hypothetical - we’ve already seen it. Like the 40 yard miss against the Niners late in that game?

I put Carlson and Joseph in the, "Better to know the devil you do than the devil you don't" category.
Occam's Razor.
I heard the other day that they altered Carlson's kick swing this off-season. Maybe he reverted back on a few misses this pre season?
Someone else mentioned Joseph is more reliable 40 years and in. Have to think it's a lot easier to make in game decisions based around needing to get the kicker closer. Maybe you can't make the longer ones as well, but it always seems like the short misses are the real killers.

"5 surprises from cutdowns"
3) Keeping six defensive ends
For most of the season last year, the Packers’ fifth end defender behind Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare was rookie Brenton Cox Jr. He recorded all of four defensive snaps in 2024. For that reason alone, it was surprising that Green Bay not only retained Cox, who also only played nine special teams snaps as a rookie, but also preseason standout Arron Mosby. No one is complaining about keeping an emergency fifth defensive end, but very few — if any — expected the Packers to roster six players at the position.
----------------------------------------------------
My takeaway is Enagbare got the benefit of the doubt on his knee but they are waiting to see for sure. Cox and Mosby also both had big plays in pre-season at a premium position so they didn't want to risk losing them to some other team's 53.
I like it. Preston Smith is not getting any younger.

If we're depending on a 7th receiver, we're in trouble. Bottom line is that while talented, when is he going to get on the field? Mosby can at least play on multiple "teams". And Cox could be Smith's replacement in a year or so.

If you look at this link below, you can see certain trends in snap counts and that tells us how many dudes at each position are active on Sunday
For the WR spot, 5 each week.
Different dudes based on injury - but consistently 5 each week
So why keep 7 ?
For the OLB/DE spot, 5 each week. A little more variability, but generally 5

Hafley is going to run these guys ragged, so I can see the value in keeping more bodies at DE and as noted above, the candidates are worthy
