There are plenty of Callahans out there, no need to save a roster spot for him.
Callahan was very impressive last night but the Packers won't be keeping three QBs. I'm going with Burks over Crockett although injury may determine that one as well as several others. Love to see Allison make it but the numbers aren't in his favor and he appears PS bound. Overall depth of the team is extremely impressive.
I can't imagine another team would want him badly on their 53, so I don't see why he wouldn't last on the PS. I guess it depends on Hundley's ankle, if it looks like Hundley will be limited for a few weeks then I could see Callahan making it until one of the suspendees returns.
It just comes down to numbers for a lot to these spots. They have 5 guys at WR that are experienced in the O or have played well in limited time that they will probably keep. That leaves just one spot for guys with huge potential like Davis, Allison, and Janis. None of them are guys who would justify using a 7th WR spot, but they're also guys you want to develop. My guess is Davis gets the spot, Janis either goes on IR or they send him to the PS, and they roll the dice with Allisoni on the PS. Allison wasn't drafted and while he's done some good things, it's hard to imagine teams will burn a 53 spot on him right now. Maybe during the season when injuries pop up, but right now teams have the 53 they want for the most part.
Anyone notice Ted screaming at the refs last night?
Correct me if I am wrong, But I am pretty sure that Janis is no longer eligable for PS.
Also, Any of the rookies that get cut need to clear waivers before they can be added to the PS. Also, even after they clear waivers they are free to sign with any team they so choose and it does not have to be to the 53. they can also sign to another teams PS..
They were ready to keep 7 WRs before the hand injury. Can they IRDTR Janis and give Allison the spot for now? Postpone the decision and see if he continues to progress and/or see if they can find another gunner.
Seems like a team would be more likely to take Allison right off the bat than 4 games in. I don't want to lose him.
You don't have to look any farther than the **** show Baalke trotted out ar WR last night to spot a team that should be interested in Allison. My God SF is bad at WR.
Beat me to it Chili I was just gonna post that.
Some of our warts at ILB showed up last night. Thomas had a really bad showing IMO and Bradford took a small step back.
Will be interesting who makes it from that group.

So MM or TTs said that?

Thomas didn't even dress for the game last night, so you weren't watching him.
You're right, it must have been #45 Mathews. I saw 40's and assumed Thomas.

No, good point. Reporters were saying that. I also just have a feeling after last year's debacle at the position he'll want to overload it this year if the talent is there.
Since some injuries occurred last night that could change roster decisions for final cut-down; likewise who may/may not go on IR and IR-DTR, I thought this would be a good time to revisit this subject.
But in the meantime we still have to get down to 75 by Tuesday, so here are my predictions for the first round of cuts.
C Kyle Steuck
C Jacob Flores
TE Mitchell Henry
WR Harvey Binford
WR Jamel Johnson
WR Herb Williams
WR Ed Williams
LB Benequiz Brown
CB Robertson Daniel
CB Makiton Dorleant
CB Josh Hawkins
S Jermaine Whitehead*
P Peter Mortell
* I originally had S Marwin Evans listed, but had the jersey number wrong. Edited to correct.
I think this preserves as much depth as possible for as long as possible, especially for the positions that are banged up. It also gives another week for the guys who are on the bubble (Davis, Geronimo, Burks, Squirewell, and the big uglies on the DL positions), and the 'tweener' guys like Thomas or Bradford.
Ultimately, Barclay's value may have increased with Spriggs and Patrick having to wear clubs and Walker now nicked up, and is slowly but surely learning to play C.
I'm confident that Callahan will make the final 53 because of Hundley's injury.
Depending on the severity of Crockett's injury, I don't know if we may stand pat with the guys we have, or if TT may bring in somebody else. We still have Ryan Grant on speed dial?
I do think we will keep as many of the DTs and DEs as possible until Pennell's suspension is over. It's going to be hard to have enough guys to rotate (especially for the Jags game), and one of our FAs will play himself into a roster spot.
Update on Spriggs:
He cut his finger in practice on Friday. Needed stitches. While playing in the 1st half, it re-opened and so they clubbed it so it wouldn't open again. There is no fracture of any kind. So the club was meant to protect the cut. It'll heal in likely 7-10 days so it's really not an injury that will be a concern.
Did they say HOW he cut his finger?
Who cares? Its a cut. There is no fracture. It's not a big injury. That's the bottom line.
“I mashed my finger up in practice,” Spriggs said. “I needed a couple of stitches. I started the game with just a smaller cast on, but I tweaked it at the beginning of the game. The smaller cast wasn’t working well, so we went with the bigger one.”
Spriggs said the finger is not broken.
But were he and Brady thumbwrestling? That's what we're really asking.
He punched a FOX reporter.
Quick! Get their cell phones. Plus we need a "meeting" with Roger.
Looks as if the injuries to Banjo (hamstring) and Spriggs (finger) are relatively minor. No word yet on Elliott (hamstring).
Good news on both players. However, even healthy, Im not sure Elliot was getting on the 53. He hasn't done much of anything as an OLB in a very crowded group.
Packers' undrafted rookie tradition continues with Allison, Brice, Price
McGinn: Brice, Evans show they belong
A couple of pieces about which undrafted players could end up on the final 53.
This may be TT's best UDFA class ever. The DBs can really run & Geronimo can play in the NFL.
I can see Callahan getting picked up by Dallas as a backup with Romo's injury. I can see a few other teams picking up some of our UDFA safety's and CB's. (Eg, Colts for a CB, Chiefs, Falcons for a Safety, and Panthers for a punter.)
I can also see us looking hard at "Pot roast" seeing as how the Patriot's don't seem interested in him.
The McGinn article Michiganjoe posted has a poll: How many WRs should the Packers keep?
6 is winning @66%
7 is in 2nd @ 25%

Just curious why you guys are only choosing 9 players for the PS.
Aren't there 10 positions available?
Wow, what a difference one week can make. Between some injuries and the play of a couple of rookie free agents, here's my updated projection. Welcome, as always, your thoughts. FYI, current roster of 90 must be cut to 75 by 4 PM ET 8/30 and to 53 by 4 PM ET 9/3. An additional 10 players can make up the Practice Squad (PS). Players 30 years or older have their age listed in parenthesis. Also in parenthesis are whether a player is a rookie draft pick (e.g. D5), or a College Free Agent (CFA) or veteran Free Agent pickup (FA).
OFFENSE
QB (2): Rodgers (32), Hundley
PS: Callahan (CFA)
Cut: Williams (CFA)
Comments: Callahan had an incredible game against San Francisco. And his stats didn't include a perfectly thrown bomb to fellow rookie WR Trevor Davis. He'll obviously make 53 if Hundley isn't healthy for Jacksonville. Is there any way Packers keep him on 53 anyway? Because odds now seem high he'll not make it through waivers and onto our Practice Squad, where we'd love him to be.
RB (4): HB's Lacy, Starks (30), Crockett, FB Ripkowski
PS: HB Burks (CFA), FB Squirewell (CFA)
Cut: HB Ross (CFA)
Comments: Like Burks, hopes he at least makes it to PS. If Crockett's injury troublesome, Burks then likely our #3, with Crockett going to Injured Reserve (IR). Haven't read much about Ripkowski's injury that kept him out of 49ers game. Hopefully he's OK. If not, would certainly be nice to get Kuhn back somehow, ala James Jones a year ago. Keeping Squirewell on PS to bring up as Ripkowski's only replacement option if and when needed.
WR (6): Nelson (30), Cobb, Adams, Montgomery, Abbrederis, Davis (D5)
IR: Janis
PS: Allison (CFA)
Cut: Waters (CFA), Williams, Johnson, Binford (CFA)
Comments: Previously had Janis making 53. But now I think Packers will go with option to bring him back by mid-season, attempt to replace his Special Teams contributions with extra LBs and DBs kept. Like Allison a lot, but think tough to keep him as 7th WR, especially with low ST potential. Hope he makes it to PS.
TE (3): Cook (FA), Rodgers, Perillo
PS: Backman
Cut: Henry, Pierce
Comments: I said last week "Very excited about addition of Cook. Former college WR with great size and speed. Runs better than Finley ever did. Is hungry, having been in the league seven years, never been to the playoffs. If WRs stay healthy, Cook will never be double-covered and could break out with a Pro-Bowl type season." Boy, did he show what he's capable of against San Francisco. Loving it.
OL (9): Bakhitari, Sitton, Linsley, Lang, Bulaga, Tretter, Spriggs (D2), Murphy (D6), Taylor, Barclay
PUP: Linsley
PS: Walker
Cut: Patrick (CFA), Flores (CFA), Steuck (CFA)
Comments: Barcley now makes it as backup C with Linsley going to PUP. Walker still has chance to unseat Taylor, but bothered by injury. Rotheram already cut.
DEFENSE
DL (5): Daniels, Clark (D1), Guion, Lowry (D4B), Price (CFA)
SUS: Pennel
PS: Ringo
Cut: Kuder (CFA), Anderson (CFA)
Comments: Hoping Clark's back injury nothing serious. Believe Packers would prefer better than Price or Ringo as their 5th DL, but for now going with Price for his better run-stopping ability over Ringo, who they keep on PS another year.
OLB (6): Matthews (30), Peppers (36), Perry, Jones, Fackrell (D3), McCray (FA)
PS: Gilbert (CFA)
Cut: Elliott
Comments: Key change is cut of Elliott. Hard to believe, but he's shown nothing either in camp or games. McCray basically displaces him. Too much OLB and ILB talent to keep him above anyone else listed. Gilbert a pleasant suprise, now going to PS.
ILB (5): Ryan, Martinez (D4A), Barrington, Thomas, Bradford
Cut: Brown (CFA), Mathews (CFA)
Comments: Like others mentioned above, hoping Thomas' injury minor. Bradford has played his way onto 53.
CB (5): Shields, Randall, Rollins, Gunter, Hawkins (CFA)
SUS: Goodson
PS: Daniel, Dorleant (CFA)
Cut: Jette (CFA), Gatewood (CFA)
Comments: No change from last week.
S (5): Clinton-Dix, Burnett, Hyde, Brice (CFA), Evans (CFA)
IR: Banjo
Cut: Whitehead (CFA)
Comments: Maybe a reach here, but really liking CFA Evans and thinking Banjo's injury may land him on IR. Could bring him or Janis back later in season.
SPECIAL TEAMS
PK (1): Crosby (31)
P (1): Masthay
Cut: Mortell (CFA)
LS (1): Lovato
Comments: No changes. Still expect Packers to replace Lovato with Goode at some point.
Timmy! posted:Just curious why you guys are only choosing 9 players for the PS.

One spot has been permanently reserved for Carl Bradford
WR Ed Williams has been cut. Like Burks much better than Crockett and hope that's the direction the team goes. More dynamic runner and a much better blocker.
Initial word on Packers safety Chris Banjo's hamstring injury is good after an MRI on Saturday.
That makes the 53 tougher. I'd have to imagine they want the top special teams guy if possible.
I wonder if keeping 6 WR's means they only keep 2 TE. Unless Perillo impresses coaches on special teams, he could hit the road
packerboi posted:Looks as if the injuries to Banjo (hamstring) and Spriggs (finger) are relatively minor. No word yet on Elliott (hamstring).

This plus the guy we signed from Denver is advertised as a special teams stud.
Nice adjustments Sschumer. One point of contention, I can't see them keeping anything less than 4 TE's.
We only have one FB so they serve as backup there, we have seen a bunch of two TE sets this preseason and MM is known for loving his TE's.
Bradford or fringe DB gets sent to PS for that spot.
I still think 3 RBs is a real option with Cobb and Monty. While Crockett and Burks have some nice skills they just aren't guys you wouldn't be able to find mid-season if there was some catastrophic injury bug in the backfield.
Also, unless I'm mistaken, Backman is not PS eligible. If that's the case, I expect Perillo to beat him out of a roster spot.
Ripper (knee injury reported from last practice before SF game) and Crockett may be the biggest influence on both RB and TE (and, ultimately PS) positions. I'm not as worried about RB, but we do need a banger to run interference for Lacy and Starks. Whether that comes from Squirewell or another TE may be determined by severity of his injury.
I agree. Only concern would be comprehension of pass protection assignments.
If you are confident you can stash them on PS, that takes care of that concern.
