Raji wouldn't say one way or the other, which is what his agent (Dunn) likely told him.
Raji wouldn't confirm or deny the $8 million offer.
"I'm not going to talk about contract," he said at midweek.
McGinn asks one of his NFL contacts if Raji should take an deal @ $8mm and then gets a quote that lends perceived validity to the story.
An executive high up in personnel for an NFL team was asked, given the market forecast for 2014 and beyond, if Raji should take the $8 million.
"Damn right he should," the scout said. "For $8 million he should be signing. Who is his agent?"
My guess is there never was an offer from the Packers @ $8mm but there was for something less, and that Raji' agent Dunn (after declining the lower $$) floated the $8mm number as a way to set the market for his soon to be UFA. And I think that quote from the NFL executive actually supports this line of thinking based on the way the question was asked. "given the market forecast for 2014 and beyond"
not relevant (that doesn't seem necessary at this point) but CA's gif instantly reminded me of this movie.

Well there you go. TT being blamed for something he more than likely never did. Wonderful.
The most overrated TE in the league. He's very athletic and has great hands, but nothing else...can't block, can't beat physical defenders, and he hasn't shown up when the Saints have needed him to.
and to give up two 1's to get him.
that's phooking ridiculous. maybe jerruh would be that stupid but not Seattle or GB.
Dolphins re-signed Brent Grimes. Sounds like a 4 year deal. Will be interesting to see the terms. This might actually be a plus for GB. Have to think Shields entertained the idea of going home to Miami.
@ProFootballTalk No franchise tag for Seahawks DE Michael Bennet
No to Graham for two 1st rounders.

Dolphins gave Pro-Bowl CB Brent Grimes a four-year, $32 million deal that includes $16 million guaranteed, per ESPN source.
This is not a plus for GB. Grimes is better but he's 4 years older and he gets $16 mill guaranteed. Pack really need to bring Shields back. One of the few bright spots on this weak D. Hope they improve at ILB as well. Cannot go a 3rd year with Hawk/Jones as their starting duo
Werder reports that the Redskins will use the tag on Orakpo Monday if they are unable to agree on a long-term contract by the deadline. Doing so would all but ensure Orakpoâs return since other teams would have to fork over two first-round picks to sign him away and would also buy more time to reach agreement on a multi-year deal that would be a better fit in the overall salary structure in Washington.
The franchise tag for linebackers is $11.455 million this year.
Colin Kaepernick wants $18 million a year.
I'm disappointed. With the 10 million dollar rise in the salary cap I was hoping he would ask in the 20-22 mill range.
Gotta pay Shields... Top-flight CB's that are still young don't grow on trees. Stoopid move if TT lets him walk.
It's been pointed out many times before on these boards. Every GB FA that walk's doesn't walk because TT didn't try and keep them. Sometimes they just want to go somewhere else.

Relax, Rodenthaus is just stomping his feet cause he didn't get what he promised Sam, yet.
As noted by Packer Update, Shields has an immense "G" tatoo'd on his neck; how is that going to work out for him someplace else ?
Rosenhaus is deathly afraid of signing Sam only to find out somebody else got more someplace else... this is all about saving face and being able to market yourself as The Man when it comes to free agency negotiations.
Rumors were floating this weekend that the Browns were thinking about cutting Ahtyba Rubin. Not much pass rush but reportedly a great locker room guy, a young Pickett.
C - Alex Mack
Safeties TJ Ward and Jarius Byrd both will hit the market. Sign Ward or Byrd and let Shields walk? There is depth behind Shields and nothing next to Burnett, unless Richardson makes a big jump.
He may be somewhat one dimensional, but that one dimension he brings is freaking phenomenal. I wouldn't give up two first rounders for him either, but he is the best in the business right now. I don't think he's overrated at all.
Regarding Mack, can teams still put a "poison" pill in any offer that would stop the Browns from matching? Seems to me thats one of the reasons teams stopped using the Transition tag a few years ago.
On Shields, thought I read Grimes in Miami just signed for 4 years, $32 mil, or $8 mil per year. Dont know how Grimes compares to Shields, but seems like the market is beginning to take shape for starting CB's. Thoughts?
Is he even really a TE? Only 33% of his snaps were as a TE. He's a big WR and he plays like it. If we're talking about him only as a receiver, then yes he is easily the best receiving TE in the NFL compared to the others. All other areas of being a TE he plays like a WR. If I'm looking for a TE to do all the things a TE should do, I'm sacrificing some receiving ability and taking Jason Witten, Vernon Davis, or Brent Celek over Graham. That's just my opinion, his production is tremendous though.
Doug, 12 posts up on Grimes.
No more poison pills, but someone could put a heavy 1st year which could make it hard for a team to match.
4pm ET has passed. No tagging in GB.
It will be up to an arbitrator to decide if he is a TE. Both sides have valid arguments, should be interesting to see how Graham is classified.
He signed his contract...if it designates him as a TE, he can go pound sand. I believe the Saints are air tight on this one.
It's not that cut and dry. The new CBA has rules on classifications on players, and part of the classification is where and what position the player lined up for "snaps" the previous year. The data shows that Graham lined up in a "typical" TE position 33% of his snaps, therefore he lined up "wide" 66% of the time. He and the NFLPA definitely have an argument.
On a side note, the difference between franchised at TE and WR is about 4-5M. Not chump change.

Indeed, but as noted earlier, if he wants to be designated as a WR, then his stats and paycheck will be positively average. Its only as a TE that his stats/production suggest he should be paid as a star.
In other words, do you wanna be paid as a top 5 TE or the 57th WR ?
He wants to have his cake and eat it too; something he learned firsthand from his great & selfless leader, Drew Bree$$$$
Interesting
Teams have a week to lock up FAs-to-be, and #Texans are working to do so with TE Garrett Graham. #Packers will have interest if heâs free

#Packers have been fans of TE Garrett Graham since he came out of Wisconsin. Fits their scheme. But weâll see if he makes it to the market

We both know it's a bit more complicated than that. Would the Saints have used the tag on him if they classified him as a WR? I doubt it, or they would have made an offer more in the lines of a Top 10 WR (which his stats show). The Saints used the tag on him, because they want to pay him as a TE and not a receiver, makes sense as that is what they drafted him as. Once they saw his skill set, he is clearly more of a big WR, than a TE, and have used him as such. It's no different than the Packers drafting Masthay as a P, then see he can kick FG's, use him for the majority of FG's, and then the Packers trying to pay him as a Punter, since they drafted him to be a punter.
His production last year, equated out to be a Top 15 "receiver" in yards, Top 20 in yards/gm and #1 in TD's of all receivers. He can be drafted as a TE, but he clearly is a "hybrid" who spends most of his time lined up wide as a "receiver". Your right, that this will eventually get worked out with the CBA and the TE franchise number coming up. But I think it's interesting that the Saints want to pay a Top 5 TE, the same amount a Top 40 WR gets, when clearly his stats and production warrant a Top 10 WR contract.
