Typical of what McGinn has become.

Not a source with the Packers, but a source somehow connected with Raji's agent gets the story started.

A source said agent David Dunn...

Raji wouldn't say one way or the other, which is what his agent (Dunn) likely told him.

Raji wouldn't confirm or deny the $8 million offer.

"I'm not going to talk about contract," he said at midweek.

McGinn asks one of his NFL contacts if Raji should take an deal @ $8mm and then gets a quote that lends perceived validity to the story.

An executive high up in personnel for an NFL team was asked, given the market forecast for 2014 and beyond, if Raji should take the $8 million.

"Damn right he should," the scout said. "For $8 million he should be signing. Who is his agent?"

My guess is there never was an offer from the Packers @ $8mm but there was for something less, and that Raji' agent Dunn (after declining the lower $$) floated the $8mm number as a way to set the market for his soon to be UFA. And I think that quote from the NFL executive actually supports this line of thinking based on the way the question was asked.  "given the market forecast for 2014 and beyond"

Dolphins gave Pro-Bowl CB Brent Grimes a four-year, $32 million deal that includes $16 million guaranteed, per ESPN source.

This is not a plus for GB. Grimes is better but he's 4 years older and he gets $16 mill guaranteed. Pack really need to bring Shields back. One of the few bright spots on this weak D. Hope they improve at ILB as well. Cannot go a 3rd year with Hawk/Jones as their starting duo

Werder reports that the Redskins will use the tag on Orakpo Monday if they are unable to agree on a long-term contract by the deadline. Doing so would all but ensure Orakpo’s return since other teams would have to fork over two first-round picks to sign him away and would also buy more time to reach agreement on a multi-year deal that would be a better fit in the overall salary structure in Washington.

The franchise tag for linebackers is $11.455 million this year.

Relax, Rodenthaus is just stomping his feet cause he didn't get what he promised Sam, yet.

As noted by Packer Update, Shields has an immense "G" tatoo'd on his neck; how is that going to work out for him someplace else ?

Rosenhaus is deathly afraid of signing Sam only to find out somebody else got more someplace else... this is all about saving face and being able to market yourself as The Man when it comes to free agency negotiations.

Regarding Mack, can teams still put a "poison" pill in any offer that would stop the Browns from matching? Seems to me thats one of the reasons teams stopped using the Transition tag a few years ago.

On Shields, thought I read Grimes in Miami just signed for 4 years, $32 mil, or $8 mil per year. Dont know how Grimes compares to Shields, but seems like the market is beginning to take shape for starting CB's. Thoughts?

Is he even really a TE? Only 33% of his snaps were as a TE. He's a big WR and he plays like it. If we're talking about him only as a receiver, then yes he is easily the best receiving TE in the NFL compared to the others. All other areas of being a TE he plays like a WR. If I'm looking for a TE to do all the things a TE should do, I'm sacrificing some receiving ability and taking Jason Witten, Vernon Davis, or Brent Celek over Graham. That's just my opinion, his production is tremendous though.

It's not that cut and dry.  The new CBA has rules on classifications on players, and part of the classification is where and what position the player lined up for "snaps" the previous year.  The data shows that Graham lined up in a "typical" TE position 33% of his snaps, therefore he lined up "wide" 66% of the time.  He and the NFLPA definitely have an argument.

On a side note, the difference between franchised at TE and WR is about 4-5M.  Not chump change.

Indeed, but as noted earlier, if he wants to be designated as a WR, then his stats and paycheck will be positively average. Its only as a TE that his stats/production suggest he should be paid as a star.

In other words, do you wanna be paid as a top 5 TE or the 57th WR ?

He wants to have his cake and eat it too; something he learned firsthand from his great & selfless leader, Drew Bree$$$$

Interesting

We both know it's a bit more complicated than that.  Would the Saints have used the tag on him if they classified him as a WR?  I doubt it, or they would have made an offer more in the lines of a Top 10 WR (which his stats show).  The Saints used the tag on him, because they want to pay him as a TE and not a receiver, makes sense as that is what they drafted him as.  Once they saw his skill set, he is clearly more of a big WR, than a TE, and have used him as such.  It's no different than the Packers drafting Masthay as a P, then see he can kick FG's, use him for the majority of FG's, and then the Packers trying to pay him as a Punter, since they drafted him to be a punter.

His production last year, equated out to be a Top 15 "receiver" in yards, Top 20 in yards/gm and #1 in TD's of all receivers.  He can be drafted as a TE, but he clearly is a "hybrid" who spends most of his time lined up wide as a "receiver".  Your right, that this will eventually get worked out with the CBA and the TE franchise number coming up.  But I think it's interesting that the Saints want to pay a Top 5 TE, the same amount a Top 40 WR gets, when clearly his stats and production warrant a Top 10 WR contract.
