1 Guy shouldn't make your defense that bad.

Savage might be the fastest safety in the NFL. And, as others pointed out, it's not just that he was out - Raven Greene is also out. Redmond is a decent Special Teams guy and gives good effort, but Savage is a Nick Collins type. That shows up against the TE in the middle and in keeping 8-10 yards runs from rupturing into really long runs.

It's not just him.

Kenny Clark also went out.

Am I the only one watching who is actually in the game?

So players get injured in football?  Hmmm.  Who'd a thought.

The issue isn't just that Savage is out.  It's about making necessary adjustments.  Can't keep getting scorched in the middle of the field week in and week out.  Better teams are gonna exploit that even more than the Raiders, Lions and Cowboys.  And better defenses aren't gonna give up 30+ points.

Matt Moore is capable of beating them badly next week, but it's good that they won't be facing Mahomes. Mahomes is capable of putting up 500 yards against strong, healthy defenses. He might have hung about 6 TDs on the Packers if he was playing next week.

After watching 8 games this season....

I think ABM is holding shit back -- saving it & keeping it off tape -- We've seen this defense dominate then get gashed.

Saving it for end of December / Playoff time? or am I stooopid?

With Greene and Savage out I don't think he had any room for error to hold anything back.  If anything, there could be some looks that they are still practicing or that they feel more comfortable with now that all the new pieces have been together for 8 games.  Guys gotta get and stay healthy.  You can't judge a whole lot in September but that D looked a lot more dynamic than it does now.  Is there any chance Greene gets back this season?

Or saving plays for our NFC North rivals?? I want to sweep each NFC North team this season. Why give Zimmy, Nagy and Patricia any idea of what we re going to do? 6-0 in the NFC North would be wonderful!

Greene is not on the IR DFR list according to Packers.com

What does that mean?

It means the Packers have not designated Greene, for return... yet. So far they've only DFR Sternvirgin. They have another spot open if they decide to DFR a 2nd player from IR.

Welp, this certainly helps.

Yeah and he's really the only one that I would bother to bring back this year. It's him or they only use 1 of their allotment.

At least 5-1.

2nd half of the schedule is tough with lotsa road games.

And @packerboi -- like you mentioned a week ago, the Raven fans are PO'd they let Z go. If you talk to any of em....just tell them it's payback for them "stealing" Ray Lewis from the Pack. 😉

Zeefense baby!!

Pettine's D is lacking something right now that was so crucial to his defenses in NY (and are generally crucial to successful defense): quality play at MLB. Martinez can do some good things, but he's not a stud MLB and he shouldn't THE guy. If he was playing next to Keuchly or Wagner we would be perfectly happy with Blake, but he's being asked to be the Keuchly and it's a killer. In NY Pettine had David Harris and Bart Scott, neither guy was a star, but both were very good and did their job. I know we need help at WR, OT, etc. but I truly don't think we will see this defense improve until we address MLB. I cut Pettine the same slack I cut the previous DC, He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, in this regard. There's no scheming or movement that can cover up a glaring hole. I know some are pissed at ABM right now, but there's a limit to what he can do...teams are hammering the middle of the field because it's easy pickins with who is manning it.

Totally agree, and I think they are a bit soft up front as well.  Clark is just not himself right now, and the fact that Lancaster is getting as many snaps as he has is an indication of the lack of quality d-linemen on this team. Lowry has progressed a bit, but he's really just "a guy", Adam's hasn't lived up to expectations and we haven't seen much from Keke.  This is why they are getting gashed in the middle on both run and pass plays.

I agree on Lancaster, but he's a space eater similar to Howard Green. He's meant to free up opportunities for guys next to him and behind him. At that I think he's doing fine...you need grinders like Lancaster. Same for Lowry to some extent who is really exceeding expectations. The problem is that the guys behind the DL and even Clark to some extent, just aren't taking advantage of their opportunities. Their vision is terrible, they're not shedding OL, they're not taking correct angles, etc. Clark is limited it seems and is also the focal point for offenses in the interior right now. He was getting more 1on1 opportunities early in the year, but teams have zero respect for what's behind him that they trust the FB or even the RB to win in the open field vs. Martinez and others. Often times they don't even need OL at the second level. ILB has been arguably the biggest gaping hole we've seen on this team for almost a decade.

On a team someone has to be the weakest link, it is the role of the coaches to scheme, plan, hide and do whatever is needed to keep that exposure to a minimum.  I trust Pettine will eventually do this.

2 1st rounders as DB's, a high 2nd (almost another 1st) in King, and 2 well paid FA's in Williams and Amos. That's way too much capital spent for these kind of results.

Concern is fair and prudent.   But lets give him the rest of the season before we start making conclusions.

Individual performances have looked good for some, horrible for others.

The CB's we love to applaud have each been gashed for numerous big plays.   Jaire had 2 last week and King has had several bad games.     The only consistent players on D have been the Smith Bros and Amos.    You could include Savage in that but the missed time has limited his opps.

Gary ain't doing much on the outside, then put him on the inside.  He's got a good push, is hard to push back. Maybe, just maybe he clogs up the middle and it won't be as soft.
