We do what we do?
Win the 1:1.

This is what I have been seeing. Martinez is not big or fast enough to be slow making the read. The defense is designing ways to keep him free to penetrate and make stops, but he’s late reacting an awful lot of the time. So offensive coordinators are identifying his tendencies and straight attacking them.
This weakness is not going away. Every week quality TEs and RBs are going to wreak havoc on this defense, and most of it is pointed at #50.
Which speaks loudly of Burks' disappointing development.
You hate to look at the D and compare it to what we saw 2015-2017, especially after all the heavy drafting and FA spending. I think we're closer to being really good than that but are we really just a ILB and another DL away? How many more high draft picks get spent there at the expense of the offense?
To pile on the concern, the D is about as healthy as anyone could expect midway through the season. The biggest question is Kenny's health.
The defense is certainly better this year than the last 2-3 years. However, we know they are weak at ILB and honestly the DL could use an upgrade as well. Unfortunately, this problem won’t be solved in season so we will have to scheme and hope for the best knowing that opposing teams can attack those areas.
Whenever I see ILB talk,, I often think of the Bears and the Packers. Realizing there are exceptions, the Bears get good (if not great) ILB's while the Pack gets good (often great) QB's. Generally, each team does not fare well at the other position!
That being said, I'd rather have a great QB!
Once upon a time the bears had Blanda and later Bratkowski.
Let them both go.
Agree on the DL and ILB being in need of repair.
My biggest concern was the lack of adjustment made against the Chargers. Just kept on with the same predictable looks and Rivers and his OC destroyed Pettine.
Speaking of which, the Jets had a great defense under Pettine...obviously a lot of talent but my questions is : was the creativity and scheme all due to Rex Ryan ? Yes man with Jets, Ravens, Buff ....then on his own in Cleveland, GB....
Is Pettine just a Norv ? (See ya Sunday)

What happened to Adams? The vastly improved Adams?
I'm over blaming the DL and Martinez. A lot of times we're playing 2-3-6 and we're pissed that Clark and the boys are getting gashed for 5. Even wen we play 3-3-5 were still in a pass defense.
The real problem is that the 6 isn't stopping the pass. We should expect to give up 4 to 5 in that situation, but we shouldn't expect for them to then be able to throw on it as well. Might as well play a true 3-4 or 4-3 at that point.
Honestly, the main problem seems to be CB lately. In the past 3 weeks our top 3 CBs in terms of snaps played have a grand total of 2 passes defended. Two flippen pass breakups.

All that said, Martinez has 0 pass breakups while playing 99% of the snaps... soooo, there is that. But like I said, if the pass D personnel package isn't stopping the pass, might as well go base and contain the run a little.
What happened to Adams? Stuck in the same malaise as the rest of the DL. F if I know. Hope springs eternal in training camp.
Jaire hasn't exactly been shutting anything down either lately. He's still up and down like he was as a rookie. He shows flashes of being great and then gets beat. He's like the rest of the D, isn't showing much improvement from last year other than the FA's. And the D is as healthy as you can expect.
This secondary features 1st round picks in Alexander, Savage and King (high 2nd rounder but essentially 1st rounder), and high paid FA's in Amos and Williams. That is a shit load of draft capitol and free agent money spent on the DB positions. Not to mention other high round picks spent on Randall, Rollins, HHCD (and looking more and more like Josh Jackson) that didn't pan out.
And aside from a 2 game absence from Savage, health hasn't been an issue, so no, don't go there.
That this secondary is creating flashbacks of the days of Jerron McMillian, Quintin Rollins, a lazy HHCD from the late Capers days under Mike Pettine is inexcusable.
I fully understand that Kittle is arguably the best TE in the NFC but for him to run that wide open on the TD completion, for this secondary to constantly get gashed on crossing route after crossing route, is inexcusable.
Pettine had a full bye week, self scouting, and an array of other tools to prevent shit like that happening. It's time to stop making excuses from him and point the finger directly at the DC. The buck stops all too often at coaching and for good reason.
I don't know what is happening with the D. The lack of physicality is amazing. Savage is going to be good but he is undersized and I don't think I have heard Amos' name since the Bears game. King is just a guy IMO. I have to agree with Stephen A in that the entire Packers team seems to play soft (outside of the Smiths).

I think Amos has been just fine and agree that Savage is doing OK for a rookie.
I also agree that King is just a guy and just a guy who is prone to giving up big plays.
But the biggest point about the Packers being soft outside of the Smiths (and I'd add Jaire and Goodson) is so very true.
Sadly, the Packers have been soft on defense for almost a decade now. I really hope softees like Martinez and Fackrell are playing for other teams next season.
Maybe Davante can play some D and bring nastiness. He likes chest bumping the opposing players after the whistle and out of bounds for no apparent reason. Now there's some nastiness.
Amos is okay, Savage is fine, but King has developed some huge holes in his game. That Kittle TD showed King's 180 turn (I mentioned it earlier), is a huge problem that other teams started to exploit earlier and SF destroyed him for it.
Pettine's defense isn't worth a fuck. I'm sick and tired of seeing a Packer defense that couldn't stop Green Bay West high school if their life depended on it.
They have a lot of sacks. That's worth a fuck

LOL, as proud graduate of GB West and the Wildcats, I think the Pack would have caved under our relentless offensive pressure!
Just send the sophomore TE over the middle and let him run to daylight. Martinez can't cover him and the secondary doesn't know what the fuck they're doing.
Game. Set. Match.
Of all the receivers SF has, GB knew Kittle was the guy we needed to cover. It's about all that was talked about in the two weeks before the game! How did he get so open in the secondary? Zone defense by GB? Our DBs being confused as whom to cover? Most likely, both! Sounds like a coaching problem, to me.
Agree. Defensive game plan should've started with ensuring Kittle is covered, at a minimum, man to man every play
