Z most definitely has major incentive to come back ASAP and prove he's the same dude he was before the surgery. At almost 30, back injuries with surgery would scare most teams including GB.

I also wonder if he was told in summer he needed surgery, he refused, tried playing with it and now here we are. In some ways that might have pissed off the Packers because if that is the case, he could have had it and already been back and playing.

Even if he returns to form, I do not see GB extending him. At least not the contract he wants. I think Gary is really developing into what they envisioned and they'll spend a 1st/2nd round pick on a pass rusher. Cheaper, younger option with much more upside.

Provided for the historical record:

@RobDemovsky:  Aaron Rodgers on @PatMcAfeeShow, in advance of the trade deadline, said there's been "great communication" and he has "enjoyed the conversations with Brian (Gutekunst) that we've had. ... Made some moves already that have been great." Mentioned Rasul Douglas and Whitney Mercilus.

Added that there's been "opportunity to add to the roster, but I like the roster the way it was, especially with the guys we have coming back."

@MattScheidmann: The Packers are releasing long snapper Hunter Bradley and giving practice squad long snapper Steven Wirtel the job, sources tell The Athletic.

When they made the trade for Bojorquez, they signed Wirtel to the PS the same week. Their shared practice time in LA this summer might have contributed to that.

Wirtel spent time with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie out of Iowa State in 2020. He was with the Los Angeles Rams this past offseason, so he’ll have familiarity with Packers punter Corey Bojorquez.
