From Peter Kings column this morning

I think this was a great piece of writing from Tom Silverstein, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s longtime Packers authority, on Sunday night, on the looming conflict between coach Matt LaFleurand quarterback Aaron Rodgers as the Green Bay season goes down the drain:

LaFleur wants more motion, Rodgers wants less. LaFleur likes the quarterback under center, Rodgers likes shotgun. LaFleur needs Rodgers to be patient and supportive of the young receivers and Rodgers suggested after the game they need more hurry-up and believes in tough love.

Does anyone really think LaFleur came up with the tackle-eligible play that called for Rodgers to throw the ball to David Bakhtiari, a guy who can barely practice during the week because of the four surgeries he’s had on his left knee?

That 4.5 point spread is way, way, way too low.

Even at full strength, the Packers offense was terrible. Now, they are likely going to be missing Aaron Jones, Doubs, and Watson.

Aaron Rodgers handing off to Dillon and Kylin Hill. The WRs will be Lazard, Toure, and Sammy Watkins. The OL is still a mess and they are not sure who is going to be playing LT any given series. Runyan also had to leave the game with an injury.

Then, their main pass rushing threat is likely out for year, they'll likely be down a starting CB, and playing their 3rd string ILB (Campbell and Barnes).

How is this not something like 10.5?

Silverstein also made the point in his podcast (correct, IMO) that the organization created the problem by coddling the QB and giving in to his various demands. Hard to regain control once you give it up.

They signaled they were done coddling the QB and were planning to move on when they drafted Jordan Love.

If Jordan Love would have shown anything the last three training camps, Rodgers would have been traded once they moved Adams.

Rodgers gets to see Love in practice more than anyone. He knows the option of moving on to Love is not something MLF and Gutey want to do.

The Packers have wasted roster spots on Cobb and M. Lewis based on what Rodgers wanted, but he had nothing to do with using premium draft picks on Sternberger, DeGuara, Amari Rodgers, and Christian Watson (still has a chance if he can stay healthy) or signing Sammy Watkins. If they get contributions from even 2 of those 5 guys at WR/TE the season looks entirely different. And that's a problem no matter who is playing QB.

Ben shares that view with many Packer fans. A couple of big misses from the GM.

Their best receivers the last couple of weeks are their 4th and 7th round picks. And they were drafted in about the correct round.

@michiganjoe posted:

I agree completely with that but taking the massive compensation and moving on was still the right move regardless.

In hindsight, obviously.

Once Adams left and they decided they weren't going to do anything to try to replace even a portion of his contributions with a decent veteran WR, they need to move Rodgers.

When the behind-the-scenes stories finally come out about all this, it will be interesting to see what really did occur.

1. Did Murphy block a Rodgers trade to Denver and direct them to give the huge contract extension?

2. Did they actually believe Sammy Watkins was a viable option?

3. Did they panic after the first day of the draft this year when 6 WRs came off the board before their first pick and trade both of their second round picks to move up and draft Watson because they realized they really had no other plan?

4. Who scouted Jordan Love that got them so enamored with him to trade up to get him?

5. Did they know Bakhtiari was this level of damaged goods early last year? When was it apparent that he was pretty much done as a full-time player? If it was earlier than they've admitted, why didn't they prioritize finding a Billy Turner like veteran to help get them by?

6. Why Devonte Wyatt? What did they see in him?

7. What exactly are they looking for in a TE and why can't they draft even a solid contributor?

Zero chance MLF designed that play.  That totally reeked of AR having the idea to get his buddy a TD and MLF listening to his QB's "feedback" and going with it.  They obviously practiced it, but it was a horrible idea.

MLF's mistake was not telling AR "no that's stupid".

What a f-ing joke (not worth starting a thread over)

@AdamSchefter:  Breaking: Colts are naming their former six-time Pro-Bowl C and ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday as their interim head coach. Saturday has been a consultant for the team, is in its Ring Of Honor, and also was head coach for the Hebron Christian Academy football team in Dacula, Georgia.

We had better hope 7 turns out to be an All Pro because right now they have him and Wyatt and Watson to show for Adams and 4 high picks used to draft those 3 guys.

It would have cost them both 1s to move up for Chris Olave, but he’s on pace for 80 grabs and 1200 yards.  They would have also kept both 2s to add other guys.

Wyatt hasn’t done shit and I’m really concerned about Watson’s long term health.

As for Dallas, this feels to me a lot like Mike Holmgren wanting to show up his former team (Niners) and that wasn’t half as acrimonious as MM coming to town.  I’m shocked the spread is only hovering around 5 or even 6.  MM is probably licking his chops.  This game could be historically ugly.

I can't remember where I saw it, but MLF said something about not calling a particular play the AR decided to run.  So I don't doubt there is some friction going on between MLF and AR.  And again, maybe MLF would put his foot down but Murphy's telling him to play ball with AR.  Who knows, but that's what stinks about the front office structure.  I get a feeling that the inmates are running the asylum to a degree right now.  Lack of discipline and effort on the part of some players has been an issue all season.  Every week MLF says he's going to fix it, every week has been the same.  All I do know is we can't get rid of Murphy soon enough.  He can cause an awful lot of damage in three more seasons.  Of course, we'll see who the board picks as the next president.

@WesHod:  LaFleur says Christian Watson did not suffer a concussion. It was precautionary. MLF said he wanted to go back in but #Packers felt it was in his best interest to shut him down. "He cleared everything. He took a nice shot in the chest and lost his breath. It's unfortunate."

Matt LaFleur on Aaron Jones' chances to play vs. Dallas: "There's potential for that. ... He was trying to get back out there, too. Just want to be safe with him."

LaFleur added that Eric Stokes (ankle/knee) is the other injury that is potentially the most serious among the others who were injured yesterday.
