Jones is not Ahman Green.

2003 happened 15 years ago. Everything has changed. Backs dont need to block. They need to score and get safeties to chase ghosts to open up other things. **** man. It’s 2018.

McVay has bullseyes painted on Ha Ha and Brice. He’s going to try and manipulate them with confusion in the backfield without giving one **** about his backs abilility to block.

Hes going after Brice with zero regard for his backs ability to block. Stop thinking about backs like it’s years ago. It’s incredibly McCarthy.

Backs don’t need to block? That’s just wrong, I’m sorry that’s just flat out wrong. Backs need to block, especially is in this offense. If you have Todd Gurley, who struggles to block, that’s one thing, but he’s an outlier because he’s the most talented RB in the NFL, but short of that talent level you have to have the ability to keep 6 in if necessary. Not just that but it explodes any chance of disguising your intentions, teams know Jones is either going out or running the ball, so they can adjust accordingly and either cover, send a 6th rusher, or cheat against the run.

WTH happened to St. Brown?
These guys can't even practice without getting hurt?

We've have significantly less injuries this season compared to average for other teams. Only 7 teams have put less guys on IR than we have.

That’s where you lost me. This offense. This offense might just be getting it’s own way.

Rodgers rating against a blitz has been over 130 eight consecutive years? Nine? Who ****ing cares what the rush is. Stop being a pussy and USE YOUR WEAPONS!!!

You want players that provide max protect while advocating quick release. Which is it man? Seriously. Pick a lane.

Mike needs to get out of his old school Comfort Snuggie mentality and go collect him some mother ****ing scalps.

Hes got two months to save his job. He best get busy using every last piece of skilled talent he has instead of wondering which one of them can ****ing chip a blitzing safety.

You think keeping a RB in is max protect? Also an offense can emphasize quick passing and also have the need to take deeper drops, it’s not one or the other. Curious to see what Rodgers rating vs. the blitz when he has Jones protecting, that’s the real stat. A part of the reason his rating is so good vs the blitz, beyond his own skill and OL we’ve had, is that MM has constantly kept RBs in there who could protect. No one gave a shit about who was at RB when we had John Kuhn playing RB in pass pro, heck I don’t remember any complaining about “using weapons” when Lacy stayed in to block...because it’s important. McCarthy’s offense is fine, Jones will see the field more when he’s earned that role. He’s getting an equal share with the other RBs, they’re running well too.

I know stats are more skewed than normal since not all teams have played the same number of games, but we're also ranked 5th in total pass defense. 211 yds/game average. Not sure how that happened, but it looks good. On paper.

Unfortunately, the Rams are proficient in passing offense. They're actually beating us in nearly every category (except yds/game avg), operating at a much higher QBR, and are converting 3rd downs almost 46% of the time. It may be an advantage for our DBs if Kupp can't go, and they need every one they can get!

They have played one more game than the Packers, so we may even out those stats a bit Sunday. We could have an actual chance if the defense could keep Gurley-man under 150 yds, and under 250 yds passing. Tall task, but not impossible.

There’s no question Gurley is one of the best backs in the league.  The issue I have is we have a very talented guy in Jones that isn’t getting many touches.  Why?  If it’s due to his pass blocking that’s a really stupid reason.  Sure there is risk v reward but MM didn’t have an issue marching a hobbled 12 out there for several weeks in a row.  Why?  Even at 60% he is still better than his backup and as a result gives them the best chance to win.

It appears that the Packers will have their full compliment of WRs this week so there’s no reason not to unleash the hounds.   You know damn well the Rams will.

If the Rams have a weakness it is if you can block their vaunted DL you can move the ball and pass on their defensive backs.  They also have to find a way to slow down their pass rush.  The best way to do that is by using a guy like Jones along with spreading them out and getting rid of the ball quickly.  We’ve seen this before (think 2011) with great success.

The Rams can be beat.    I’m not thrilled with how Dix and Brice are playing but getting Alexander back and having King in the fold should help.   I fully expect they target the crappy safeties and hope our corners can pick a couple to slow them down.  That and the Packers can’t allow Gurley to rack up a bunch of all purpose yards.

Agreed that stats don't tell the whole story. The GB pass defense definitely doesn't pass the eye test. Two possible reasons for the good ranking in pass defense. First teams are easily running on the packers. Why throw when you don't need to. Second teams have had a lead and are running the clock on us.

I'd like to know how well we are at stopping teams from making 3rd down conversions. That's often the difference between good and poor defenses.

Anyone who does not think this year's defense is not better must not be watching closely...more stats;

3rd down conversion rate this year 10th, last year 28th

Yards gained per pass attempt (next to TO differential, this stat correlates highest with game outcome: This year 14th, last year 29th

Opponent passer rating: this year 17th , last year 31st.

The Packers are allowing 3rd down conversions rate of 38% (35 of 98), and as FL noted above is 10th best in the league.

Interestingly, the Rams are allowing 3rd down conversions at a 42% clip (36 of 85) and 4th down conversions at 57% (4 of 7).

Let's hope ARod makes note of this. Best way to slow down Gurley is to keep him off the field.

Do you watch any other games? EVERYONE'S defense gets "destroyed" in some games by weak opponents (Bills vs. Vikes). Do we have a great defense? No. Will Rams & Patriots score 30 on us? Probably. However the defense is still much improved over last season.

I hope you are right FLPACKER .

If the defense comes thru at all  with any semblance of a capable effort #12  will keep the Packers in Sundays game.

And if he has a shot at the end to win it,  is anyone going to bet against Rodgers??

3rd down conversion rate really doesn't come into play when the other team never gets to 3rd down.

Can't find a stat for this, but this one pertains. "First downs per play"

We are 9th in the NFL in that category. 30th last year

And before you come up with another unfounded retort, here is another "stat that doesn't mean shit" : Average yards given up per play:

We are 11th  this year 25th last year.

Valid point, but Pettine has the defense going in the right direction. We are right now at least an average NFL defense, could become better than that as season progresses, if we keep CBs healthy

Yeah gotta wonder what the defensive stats would look like this year vs last if they had kept Capers around and just had Rodgers playing. I’m sure it would have improved but not as much as it has with Pettine.

Still seeing too many guys getting loose down the middle of the field. That’s not going to get fixed with current personnel.

If all goes well Ha Ha might be traded by Tuesday. Would love to see Gute pick up a 2nd rounder but I’d be happy with a bag of lock washers and Clinton Dix gone. Only way he stays is if Gute can’t find a better option than the 3rd round comp pick he’s likely to get after Ha Ha signs his FA deal.
