That said, I'm surprised NE didn't get the Sunday late game.

I always thought they give the #1 seeds the extra day (Sunday).  It's been like that for quite some time.

The NFLFU will make the decision on early/late games, but the #1 seeds, always play on Sunday.

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's press conference Tuesday:

(On Adams) He has a knee injury, and this is how these things normally go. Davante told me after the game he was fine, and trainers feel a little differently than that. We won't practice until tomorrow. We have the players in today. Just from meetings today and then we'll do our normal Thursday schedule tomorrow. I'll have a better idea tomorrow.
(On Abbrederis) He's doing a lot of good things. Two-point play was something that was practiced when you get the defense and the mechanics of the protection. Doing a lot of good things.
(On Bakhtiari and Shields) We'll know more tomorrow.
(On Rollins status) I hope so. It was a pretty big blow when he told me about it. But he's knocking it out of the park in treatment. We'll see.
(On Gunter coming in) I just love the way he plays and his aggressiveness.
(On OL) Feel a lot better. Clearly something we needed to improve on. JC Tretter gave us that. Couple rough spots with assignments. Really our OL played well and JC played well. He could play six spots. Throw tight end in there. Mental toughness is off the charts.
(On team's confidence at end of games) I look at it as fundamental of Green Bay Packers football. You define and categorize critical plays. That's something you live for. Your quarterback and your playmakers live for. Have to win your one-on-ones.
(On safety play) Important if you look at safety position, safeties and tight end have really elevated of having four guys who can play back there, especially with these tight ends running down the field. Shows you how important the safeties are.

(On tempo) Tempo creates energy. Yeah, I agree with that. It’s part of being a no-huddle offense. That’s the way you prefer to play. We’re all about getting as many attempts at the plate as possible. That goes back to the offense, how we built this thing, it’s about playing as fast as you can.

(On Cobb in the backfield) I think like anything, you go through the game-plan process, you have the personnel, and everything has to go through the personnel conversations. Then there’s the scheme. There’s a lot of variables in that. We’ve seen more base defense against our sub offense this year. Those are the types of things you look at, and you weigh it.

(On travel plans) Yes, we’re leaving Friday 1 p.m. We’ll practice here. Friday is a normal Saturday for us. (Packers didn't practice in Arizona before their game vs. Cardinals three weeks ago.)

Green Bay — Quarterback Carson Palmer of the Arizona Cardinals spoke with local media via conference call Tuesday afternoon to discuss the upcoming playoff game.

Here's a look at what he had to say:

(On facing a high number of pass rushers from the Packers) "It’s extremely difficult. They have — I don’t know, I was counting on film — I think seven guys who can rush the passer. Really, really physical group. There’s not a small quick, fast guy there. They’re all big. They all run well. They’re all really strong at the point of attack. They can set the edge. They all have different pass moves to win in one-on-one games in the outside. They do a good job with games inside — twists, stunts and all the different things you get, especially when Clay (Matthews) is involved. It’s just a very, very solid group with no weaknesses. A defense that’s got a lot of experience and played in big games and won big games. Really, the kind of defense you just have to go out and play your best football to beat."

(On the speed of the Cardinals' wide receivers) "Well top to bottom, it's got to be the fastest group in the game right now. I can't think of one off the top of my head that would beat us in a four-man relay. You know, it's explosive, we have big, physical possession-type receivers. We have guys that can take the top off and open up the middle of the field. And we have guys that can win one-on-one. So it's a really good mix of some youth, some experience, some physicalness, some pure just blazing speed."

(On his impressions of the Packers' secondary) "Really good group, really good group. You know there's so many different numbers that have been switched in and out, and I know two rookies that you wouldn't know they were rookies unless you looked at the stat sheet and saw years of experience next to their name. You know, thinking back to just a couple different games, just seeing guys that make plays that you don't expect them to make.

"There's a couple plays against Oakland that I saw (Damarious Randall) make, you could just tell he's not playing like a rookie, he's seeing the game, seeing guys around him and understanding who's supposed to go where, and if they're not, he's covering other guys' butts. And then Burnett's been there forever and been such a great player, and Clinton-Dix is a young guy, but again, he doesn’t look like he’s a young guy. He looks like an experienced safety that can cover the ground, he can stop the run, he made a couple nice plays in the red zone last week in Washington. Just really top to bottom, just a very, very polished group.

"There’s a reason you hear that Green Bay is such a great organization because it’s a lot of homegrown talent and guys that have been there for their whole careers or grew up in the same system and the system doesn’t change, the play calls don’t change, all the different fire zones that they can bring. You don’t see guys blowing coverages that are rookies because they learn it from Day 1 and they’ll probably be running it their whole career if they stay there because it’s just so consistent there. It may be young at some places but it doesn’t show."

(On the mood of the team) "We’re just excited to play. It’s been a long couple weeks. We lost our last game in a game that was just kind of weird and awkward when we were focused really on this game and we shouldn’t have been. We’re just excited to play and there’s no doubt we understand how important this is and how rare these opportunities are.

"We just got off the practice field and it was a great practice. It was back to what it normally is, as far as energy and intensity and talking. You can just tell, we’re champing at the bit to play and can’t wait to get to Saturday. We have a lot of work to do because, to beat this team, it’s going to take a ton of work during this week. We won’t have that problem on Saturday."

No. Last year Seattle and New England were both #1 seeds, both on Saturday.   2013, Denver and Seattle, both on Saturday.  You'll recall even in 2010 Atlanta was the #1 seed and they played the Packers on Saturday night.

I think the laying the wood comment belongs in the Rodgers and Munn thread

If Bak ends up starting, I'd like to see them give Tretter some reps at TE. U-73. He can help with pass protection and run blocking. And let's face it, no one will notice if Quarless or even Rodgers plays a little less.

Seattle was the #1 seed last year and got the Saturday game.

And definitely the #6 Packers at the #1 Falcons was the Saturday late game.

That is funny. He is a lot faster than most players in pads.

Jerry Rice's 40 time was 4.59.

Never, ever saw him caught from behind during his time with SF.

This is really starting to bother me ...I wish you hadn't brought it up.

I mean we can crowd fund the ticket for you...

Let us know tomorrow ...cuz you're going to Arizona dude.

How much better is Tretter's time than our TE's?

Found on the internet: In the last three years in the NFL, excluding teams with losing records, there have been 11 blowouts where the teams played a rematch later that same season. The team who was blown out ended up winning 8 of the 11 rematches. Of the three they lost, two were close including the gift Blair Walsh just handed the Seahawks. There are reasons for this that are far too extensive to explain this in a comments section. But fans, and most importantly the Packer players need to understand this... the odds are actually in their favor. Like McCarthy said last week, "I'm sick and tired of of talking about the negatives. We've won 10 games."  The numbers that matter greatly disagree!

McGinn has an odds and ends article on Arizona up today. Some interesting stuff, including this:

Rough outing: The Seahawks overpowered the middle of the Cardinals' offensive line. In the first half alone, center Lyle Sendlein gave up three knockdowns.

"They're pretty average in the O-line," one personnel man said. "Sendlein's average. (Mike) Iupati is a run-down guy only. (Ted) Larsen is a guy. The right tackle (Bobby Massie) is OK. The left tackle (Jared Veldheer) probably is their best guy."

Seattle held Arizona to season-low totals in yards (232) and rushing yards (27).

"Seattle did a nice job putting pressure on their interior and forcing (Palmer) into making rash, quick decisions," said one scout.

Would like to see a steady dose of Matthews and Peppers coming up the middle.

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's Wednesday press conference:

  • (On Shields) Sam Shields had a really good workout yesterday. He's going to do some on-field workout today. Still in the concussion protocol. He's getting close.
  • (On Bakhtiari) He will work today.
  • (On Adams) He will not work today.
  • (On looking at previous loss) Watch the tape. It's part of our preparation. Really that's the best video. That game was out of hand in the middle of the third quarter. You have to look at what happened and try not to overreact to things.
  • (Cardinals WRs) Very talented. All have different styles. It starts with Larry (Fitzgerald).
  • (On takeaways) Getting takeaways, there’s really two parts of it. One, you have to get yourself in position, through anticipation and ability to get your hands on the ball. As a whole, I think our secondary has done a very good job of that this season. Now, how many we haven’t caught this season, you want to improve that. But a dropped ball for a defender is a lot different than dropped ball by an offensive player. An offensive player has the benefit of anticipation and design to catch the football.
  • (On sacks) Negative plays affect outcome. We had negative plays in protection. And then negative plays turned into touchdowns, you can't have that.
  • (On penalties) Officiating crew is a lot like offense and defense, you play to your tendencies. You have a split crew last week. Usually the crew follows the lead of the referee, but it's still four guys from different crews. You have the head man, and his characteristics of what he’s done with his body of work, and the other guys follow his lead. But the information is broken down, and we give that information on Thursdays. Playoff crews are obviously totally different.

Good news on Shields and Bak.  I'm cautiously optimistic that they'll both be able to play.  Too bad he didn't offer any insight on Rollins.  We need him out there.  He's been playing well lately.

My bad, getting old SUX

@TomSilverstein: #Packers practice: Shields gets in lots of work in non-padded practice. Bakhtiari, Elliott get in some work. Adams, Rollins ride bike only.

@ByRyanWood: #Packers CB Sam Shields (concussion) practiced today and did not appear to have many limitations. A promising sign.

@ByRyanWood: David Bakhtiari (ankle) took left tackle reps at #Packers practice today. Looked like he was moving pretty well.

@TomSilverstein: Bahktiari mostly looked like he was testing out the ankle. Didn't do as much as Shields.

@TomSilverstein: #Packers injury report down from 18 last week to 14 this week. Only DNPs were Adams (knee) and Rollins (thigh).

@WesHod: Bryan Bulaga, Clay Matthews, Nick Perry and Corey Linsley all dropped off the injury report.
