Lacy in the backfield with Starks.  Gordon in the slot.  Cobb in the other slot.  Jordy outside.  Run Gordon in motion to give a jet sweep look.  What do you do as a defense?  Defend the jet sweep?  You'd better or you may have this happen:

Defend that and you may get this:

Load up on the run and you'll get this:

Keep a S back to prevent that and you'll get this:

Absolutely.  Al teaches us things that no one else can.  There's an upside to following Al.  Just today, we learned that jigaboo is not a racist word.  That should make your heart sing with joy.

What's your benefit for constantly humping Sconnie's leg?

Still waiting on an answer for the Borland v. Jones/Hawk question as well.  I'm sure you just forgot.

First Mock Draft of the season.

Round 1

Stephone Anthony/ILB/Clemson

6’2”/245 lbs.

Smart and instinctive with good size and a ton of athleticism. Finds the ball really well and doesn’t often let OL get their hands on him. Strong tackler who is more disciplined than big hitter. Reads the QB really well in Zone and has not been a liability Zone coverage. Anthony will be a strong pairing with Sam Barrington who is less of an athlete and more of thumper.

Round 2

Henry Anderson/DE/Stanford

6’6”/294 lbs.

Fantastic size and well built, not lanky like a lot of 6’6” DE…Built more like Justin Smith. Really strong pass rusher with great initial quickness and a quick first step (best 10 yd split of any DL over 270 lbs. at the combine at 1.63). Experienced in 3 and 4 man fronts playing 5-tech in Stanford’s 34 and 3-tech in their 4 man fronts. GB needs to add not just size, but height along that DL. Anderson looks like a prototypical 34 End in the mold of Brett Keisel and Justin Smith.

Round 3

Garrett Grayson/QB/Colorado St.

6’2”/213 lbs.

Very smart and efficient QB at CSU who threw for a lot of yards and a lot of TDs, but few INT’s (sound familiar). Good size with a strong enough arm to make all the throws. Experienced in a little bit more pro-style scheme and is probably the most NFL ready QB outside of the top 2, but definitely needs to have some work done. GB badly needs to solve the back-up QB dilemma because neither Flynn or Tolzien are legit QBs in this offense.

Round 4

Ben Heeney/ILB/Kansas

6’/231 lbs.

Lesser known prospect who was very impressive at the combine. Doesn’t get much publicity because he played at such a terrible program, but Heeney is a legit NFL ILB. He’s smart with good recognition skills and is aggressive attacking the football. Really strong player in coverage, reads the QB well and breaks on the ball. Will be a core ST player initially. Compares favorably to Desmond Bishop.

Round 5

Jess Heuerman/TE/Ohio St.

6’5”/254 lbs.

Thought of as a blocking TE, but he impressed me in the limited opportunities he got as a receiver. Great size with long arms and huge hands (10 1/8 ). Really strong and disciplined in-line blocker as well as a solid blocker out in space from the Y position.

Round 6

Derrick Lott/DE/Chattanooga

6’4”/314 lbs.

Great size with a quick first step and good balance. Versatile and can play on the edge as a DE or in the interior as a 3-tech. Looks like a good developmental player and good depth. Reminds me of a more athletic CJ Wilson.

Round 6 (Compensatory Pick…Evan Dietrich-Smith)

Tyler Varga/FB/Yale

5’11”/222 lbs.

John Kuhn clone. Very smart and disciplined FB who can also serve as a power/short yardage RB.

Round 6 (Compensatory Pick…James Jones)

Justin Coleman/CB/Tennessee

5’11”/196 lbs.

Good looking developmental CB in the mold of Casey Hayward. Played better in the slot than outside and has enough quickness and speed to keep up with Slot Receivers. Needs development though.

Round 7

Laurence Gibson/OT/Virginia Tech

6’6”/305 lbs.

Highly athletic Tackle who really needs time to add weight and muscle. Great size though and is quick/fast enough to quickly get to the 2nd level and move LBs. Reminds me of Jamon Meredith.

Round 7 (Compensatory Pick…Marshall Newhouse)

Jarvis Harrison/OG/Texas A&M

6’4”/330 lbs.

Experienced and polished OG who is really strong in pass pro. Needs some time to improve as a run blocker, but could be really good depth for the future.

I don't think there's a whole bunch of nothing, but I think after Garrett Grayson there are a lot of big time project QBs. All of the Spread Option/Read Option QBs will require so much development that it's hard to justify taking them earlier than r6. Winston, Marriota, and Hundley all have 1st round talent to make the project worthwhile...Hundley doesn't have the body of work as a passer or overall as a QB that the other two have which knocks him down some. After Grayson, who I view as a 4th/5th round prospect, I have Colorado State-Pueblo QB Chris Bonner and Oregon St. QB Sean Mannion as the next best QBs with both carrying a late round grade (both are also good looking developmental projects IMO). Beyond that you're talking about SO/RO QBs like Baylor's Bryce Petty, South Alabama QB Brandon Bridge, and Alabama QB Blake Sims (who ran more RO than his predecessor's at Bama did).

Grayson has a few qualities that make me think GB might be interested, his background in a pro-style offense might be the biggest...not a lot of QBs work from under center these days. He's gotten better every season and his biggest flaws seem to be in his mechanics. He's smart with the football and he's very poised and tough in the pocket. To me the biggest question is with his draft slot. I think if he's a QB that McCarthy covets then they will have to take him at the end of r3 because I definitely think there will be a market for him early r4.

Gravedigger, i like that you included Heuerman/TE/Ohio St.  I have the misfortune of living about 45 minutes from Columbus and even more unfortunately see way more OSU than I want but Heuerman could be a really good sleeper pick.  The problem with TE's at OSU is that they VERY rarely get the ball and he is used as a blocker more than anything.  But when given the chance the guy is a pretty solid TE.

But do you really think Grayson is the kind of QB talent that TT would take in the third round?  QB is far from a need and as we've seen from TT, he does consider need in the those first 3 rounds.  Only times he really deviates from considering need early on is when a guy falls way past his draft ranking.  IMO, Grayson would have to be a 2nd round talent for TT to take him in the the 3rd.  Otherwise, I think TT could find a similarly rated player at a position of need in the 3rd.  I just have yet to see Grayson (or any QB outside the top 3) rated higher than a 4th round pick.

Just my take.  Appreciate posting your mock draft.  I always like seeing multiple takes for the Pack.  Love the discussion.

Yeah that's an excellent point. When you look at the 3rd round there's kind of a drop-off in value with a lot of the players GB needs. I think we will see a lot of players overdrafted in round 3 because the depth in this draft is marginal. My thinking is also that they might look at a QB like Grayson as an investment that they can flip later on for a better pick. He's a good QB who needs a lot of the same tweaks in his mechanics that Aaron Rodgers needed. It was a hard pick to gauge though, there's a lot of borderline r3 players and some players that might drop.
