I veteran LB with plenty left in the tank and experience in the 3/4... Brandon Marshall would be a good fit. $$$ will matter, but it sure sounds to me like McCarthy is done with the Matthews inside thing. You put a rookie in there with Ryan? I'm no... You buy a veteran to pair with Ryan and give your team the best chance for success.

Good article. Packers have experienced a worse set of playoff losses over the last 15 years than any other team. (Yeah, we know!)

Yikes.  Some friends and I were talking about this over the weekend and it really is quite the list of playoff heartbreak isn't it?  We all know the games.  4th and 26, 2009 in AZ, 2016 in AZ, Last year in Seattle, TO's pass in SF (on a play that should never have happened) etc. etc.  As a lifelong fan I can die happy seeing them winning the Super Bowl twice (born mid 60's so I don't remember the Lombardi years) but still just once I want them to break this streak they are on.

I would look at raiding the Broncos defense.  Their is a ton of talent on their front 7 and five guys are about to become free agents: Von Miller, Malik Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Danny Trevathan, and Demarcus Ware.  Ware is technically under contract for 2016 but with the Broncos about to fork over $50m+ guaranteed for Miller and with Shane Ray in waiting, no reason to bring him back at $10m next year.

I'd prefer to see Trevathan in green and gold; he's young, athletic and a damn good cover ILB.  Has some injury issues but seemed healthy this year.  He has 3-4 experience and pays in an ultra aggressive scheme in Denver, which hopefully he could bring that kind of mindset to the GB front 7.  I would love Jackson too but something tells me he's going to cost $10m+ per year (they gave Wolfe, a lesser player, $8m last week).

Unless they are able to get a guy who can return punts and kicks, as well as be WR, I don't see them taking one...but you would have to get a guy that would be an absolute game changer at those positions...and I don't see many right now available. Best KR/PR guys in college this year were DB's and I don't think any are coming out early.

To me, positions of need are OL (as we saw this year, our depth is paper thin...Bulaga and Sitton are not getting younger)

TE...yes RR has shown flashes, but he is not, nor ever will be Finley...he's not that kind of athlete. If you were to pair him up with a 6'6" guy who could run a 4.65 40, you might have a real nice tandem.

ILB...IMHO, if Jake Ryan is your starting ILB instead of a relief pitcher, that's an issue. He may develop, but if you have the chance to get a guy with the atleticism of a Desmond Bishop, you can't pass it up.

DT is a position of strength, especially if they can get Guion and Raji back. Pennel has shown flashes, Daniels obviously is a star they valued and showed him the coin. But if you can get a developmental guy, that's not a bad thing.

I think Kuhn comes back one more year...Rip isn't ready yet to be that role and ST demon.

LaDarius Gunter impressed the hell out of me at times last season...I could see him sneaking up on some people and becoming a Sam Shields type guy.

Which is why it would not shock me even one little bit for the Packers to draft a WR early. Because we don't think they should.

In my opinion you can put the teams needs in any order you want.  OL depth (and future), TE, and some speed out of the RB position.   I think I would go LB first especially ILB with a physical nature in the middle.  On offense I think what will benefit this offense the most is something/anything out of the TE position.  I know the Gronks of the world don't grow on trees but they have to find someone who can threaten the middle of the field.  I think this will free up the entire offense.  As it stands now Rodgers at TE is slower than ME.  And that is not a good thing.

Wasn't Montgomery drafted for that reason? I look forward to seeing him healthy and producing next season.

Monty was brought in for PK/KR...but he wasn't really a game changer. I think he was going to be serviceable...which wouldn't be enough to justify taking a WR this year. It would have to be someone explosive and dynamic like a Devin Hester type...and there isn't anyone like that this year in the draft.

I didn't see a lot of college ball this year but TE at Alabama looked good, Howard.  Long and lean, some speed.  Don't know his status.

TT won't draft a WR for need or to surprise anybody.  He would only do it if he were the BPA.

Howard is going back for his senior year. Which sucks. Hunter Henry however has declared. A really complete TE, good speed, size and he blocks.

Projected to be a 2nd rounder.

There was a stat tossed around yesterday/today that over the past 14 years the AFC was represented in the SB by either Brady, Manning, or Roethlisberger in 12 of those seasons. Awesome parity in the AFC.

Not much different in the NFC: Basically, you need a top-notch QB to get there

 for example, Rex Grossman.

The three outliers: Grossman (great defense, fantastic special teams), Dilfer (Near-historic defense), and Kaepernick (great defense, great O-line, perfect scheme).

I'd love to see Hunter Henry in green and gold.  I was front row at that Ole Miss-Arkansas game and I'd really like MM to add that play in overtime where he catches the ball short of the sticks, throws the ball over his head 15 yards behind him, have it bounce straight up to the RB, who is waiting behind his o-line, then run down the opposite sideline for the first down.  Unstoppable.

My initial comment was not about top-tier QBs, but about the same 3 AFC QBs nearly every year. By contrast, here are the NFC (Super Bowl) QBs in the past 14 years. Just a different road to get to the Super Bowl if you come from the NFC.

And Harris. 2 screw ups from the same position group.

While a different type of screwup - you can add Starks' continuing problems with fumbling to this.

There wasn't a single guy in this group that improved from the previous year (or even stayed the same). Except John Kuhn -and at this point John Kuhn likely knows more than Sam Gash about coaching RBs in this scheme.

Good points. IIRC Aaron Rodgers set a career high in rushing yards this season. Sounds good ...but much of that was his running for his life or no WRs open. Not exactly the way you want to set that mark. As H5 said I'd love to see Bennett back coaching the RBs. But since MM anointed him the title of offensive coordinator, I don't know how you sell that without making it a demotion?
