2023 went better than anyone could have hoped and Jordan Love and the O give the fans a lot to be excited about in the future.

The NFC also looks to be there for the taking next season, so time to turn the page and consider what moves the Packers should and should not make this offseason in order finally make it back to another Super Bowl.

1) TRANSFORM THE DEFENSE. 95% of Packer fans expected Purdy to drive the Niners to that game winning TD. The defense underperforming has been going on for far too long. Coaching-wise, other, better defensive coordinators are surely available. Don't be complacent. Bringing Barry back would be a mistake.

As for the personnel, there were 8 1st round picks but no difference makers on the D in this season. It is time to consider doing something other than just drafting defense in round 1 for the 12th time in the last 13 years and hoping the D plays better (see #3 below).

2) MOVE ON FROM THE FOLLOWING VETERANS: Thank you for your service, but Bakh, Dillon, Runyan, Savage and Campbell should all be permitted to continue their careers elsewhere for both performance and salary cap reasons. Any others besides JAGs like Degaura & Nijman?

3) TRADE FOR OR SIGN AN ESTABLISHED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OR TWO. GB needs to add players who can come in and immediately help on defense. It has two 2nd, two 3rd, and two 4th round picks in the upcoming draft. That is sufficient ammunition to add a veteran defensive player via trade. Or, make room under the cap and sign an Antoine Winfield, Jr. caliber player (if not Winfield himself) who plays both intelligently and with passion.

Whether it was Reggie White or Charles Woodson back in the day or Z or Rasul more recently, those who have played with the most fire and had the greatest impact on the defense have often come from outside the organization.

4) D0N'T REACH FOR A DB IN ROUND 1. GB picks 25th in round 1 and has obvious needs at CB and S. HaHa, Randall, King, Savage, and Stokes are all DBs who were drafted at around that same point in the draft ... due to need.

It would be better to get a plus offensive lineman, RB, EDGE, DT, or ILBer at 25 than to draft yet another DB out of desperation.

5) GET ANOTHER RB. Aaron Jones was fantastic down the stretch but he is turning 30. Wilson is just a guy and Dillon needs to move on.

If Gutey could find a young RB, especially one with some speed, to go along with the Tackles, TEs, and WRs he's hit on in the past two drafts, the offense would be in awesome shape going forward.

6) OPEN THE COMPETITION AT KICKER. Gute nailed much of the 2023 draft, but Carlson in round 6 was a costly failure (at least this season when he missed the most kicks in the NFL). GB has two 6th and two 7th round picks. Try again.

With the 5th most capital in the upcoming draft and what should be more room under the cap than was available this season, the Pack has every opportunity to improve the roster in an attempt to win it all next season. Moreover, with Barry purportedly no longer under contract, there is no excuse to not at least try and improve the coaching on the defensive side of the ball.

What else should be done to get the Pack back to the big game?

I guess I don’t agree with the assessment they don’t have elite players on defense.

When healthy and motivated Jaire Alexander is a top 5 cover corner in the league.  He’s elite at his position.

Gary is as good as any outside pass rusher in the league, although, I’m not sure what happened to him over the last 6 weeks of the season.

Clark may not be an All Pro but he’s a difference maker inside.   I’d say Campbell was similar last year but this year he seems to have lost a step or two.

Preston Smith and LVN are both starter quality players, and Van Ness can certainly improve.  I think Valentine is decent on the outside as well.

I don’t know what exactly to make of Wyatt or Walker.  I view them both as average players albeit having really good physical tools and skills.  This is where having a real DC could maybe help get more out of those two guys.

To that extent, I’d look to add another DL that can anchor the interior and another that can cover guys.  Or some type of hybrid LB/S combo.

Safety play is well below average and they have to upgrade in the offseason.  On a decent defense Owens is probably a backup.  Savage and Ford are trash.

They need someone to take a leap next year to be a true Super Bowl team.

The Packers had no Pro Bowlers this year and they may only 1-2 one if they chose the teams now rather than 3/4s through the season. Maybe Jordan Love and maybe Zach Toms. The Niners probably have 4 future HOFers. The Chiefs have 3. Green Bay doesn't have the elite top-end guys to really contend for a title. They have a very good roster with depth.

Most title teams have 2-3 superstar, future HOF-types and the Packers are a bunch of good, but not great, players.

White/Favre/Butler

Rodgers/Woodson/prime CM3

Maybe Love gets there, but I don't see it yet. The WRs have depth, but no superstar. The defense lacks a playmaker. Maybe that's scheme, but I still don't see Gary getting even to the CM3 level of difference maker, let alone Reggie (which is an unfair comparison to anyone other than Lawrence Taylor or Aaron Donald). No one in the secondary is a playmaker. Alexander is very good, but he doesn't make game changing plays like a Woodson, Butler, or Nick Collins.

Unless that jump happens with Love (it could) or they get a playmaking safety or LVN takes a leap, I see this as a playoff team, but not a true title contender.

We need some guys who can hold onto interceptions. Ford led with two on the year? Yikes. Woodson probably had more in one year than this year's entire backfield.

Charles Woodson catches that Purdy throw to Savage 99 times out of 100. Probably 999 times out of a 1000.

What they need is a playmaker on defense.

On the DL, no matter what scheme you have, who is the guy that's going to get a sack that ends a game-winning drive. Aaron Donald saved the Rams Super Bowl by blowing up the final play (when Chase had a walk-in TD if Burrow can get the play off). Reggie White basically ended the 1997 Super Bowl with 3 sacks in the second half. R. Gary is a good player and had some pressures yesterday, but he didn't really rise to the occasion, even rushing from the left side. The Packers don't have that guy yet. Maybe LVN gets there, but that's a big if.

On the back end, Jaire Alexander is a shut down corner in coverage. He prevents some first downs and that's important, but he doesn't turn mistakes into 6 points on the other end. Savage did against the Cowboys and then didn't against the Niners, and that was as big a difference as any other play. There are guys that just have a knack for it - Charles Woodson, Ed Reed, T. Mathieu, D. Sanders, Darrell Green, and those guys become Hall of Famers. They just see the field differently and I'm not sure that can be taught. They need someone on the back end to do that. The guy that did that in the MLF era for them was R. Douglas. He wasn't anywhere near the level of Woodson in terms of talent, but he was a big play guy.

They now have a very solid roster without a lot of huge personnel holes across the board (except at safety). They need to add some difference makers, but those guys are usually gone after the first 10-15 picks.

Maybe Gutey goes into the trade market now that they have a playoff team. The Ravens got Roquan Smith. The Niners got arguably 3 of their top 7 players by trade (Trent Williams, CMC, and Chase Young).

If the goal is to win a SB, Barry isn't good enough. Yes, he did well over the last 4 games against good offenses. But he's not creative enough and doesn't get enough out of the talent that he has been given.

I just think a more creative and a better DC gets more from Quay Walker, Wyatt, Stokes (assuming he can get healthy), LVN and even Savage if he returns in 2024.

And he only did well because MLF changed the philosophy of the defensive play calling. Simplified coverages and allowed the front to attack.

Winfield,Jr., Lavante David and Patrick Queen are FA's.  You would think their current teams wouldn't let them leave but both teams are pretty stacked.  TB is in good shape with thier cap, BAL is similar to GB.

There are a few top DL available too.

I really like what I see from this team and I don't think they are really that far away from making a jump.  The list to me is pretty simple:

Injuries.  This team has to eventually catch lightening in bottle and have a healthy year.  That and having players like Stokes back in form will really help this team. And difference makers like Alexander and Watson on the field more will make them even more dangerous.

The defense needs to finally no shit make a step up and play defense like its meant to be played not playing not to lose.  We all know that a new scheme defensively is desperately needed.  Even though the defense did play way better down the stretch I still don't trust Barry to keep that up with how he schemes things.

Stay grounded, hungry, and remember how much it stings to lose to a team you had on the ropes.  Don't allow this young team to get cocky and over confident.

To me they are so close and I truly think they are just as good maybe better than almost every NFC team. If I was playing GB next year I would want no part of them because I think they are that good and coming on really strong.

I really do not want to see SB predictions already for this team. Keep the expectations in check.

This team had no Pro Bowlers this year. And it's not like there are any glaring omissions. A lot of good players by the end of this year, no great ones yet.

Yes, get a playmaking safety. Get this guy, plug him in at safety and that position is set for 8 years.coop

From what I've read here, is that DeJean is a zone CB/S. The last zone CB we had from Iowa was Josh Jackson. Jackson couldn't cover anyone, in man to man defense. Unless the Scouts can see tape of him flourishing in man to man, I'd pass.

I'd like a fast DB who can blitz. I liked what I saw from Nixon, there. Not saying we need to draft one in the first round, but if our guy is there and probably won't be by the next time we pick, I'd say go for it.

I'm all for the Pack adding a veteran difference maker on defense, including via trade, though I am not sure another DT is the biggest need.

The rumors are already starting:

Commanders Trade Jonathan Allen?

His words have led to rampant speculation about what the Commanders might do with the seven-year pro and two-time Pro Bowler, including a speculated trade with the Green Bay Packers.

It seems the future for Allen and for Washington hinges on whether or not he wants to be part of it here, and what the franchise might get in return if it trades him. To the Packers or any other team.

Make a play for Antoine Winfield, Jr.  That takes the pressure off of having to draft a safety early, and gives us a legit playmaker. Maybe he gets the tag. I don't know, but he would be worth the money. He's the one free agent I would back up the truck for.

TB also has Mike Evans and Lavante David as FAs.  Can't pay everyone.

Another name to keep an eye on as he is rumored to be a potential cap casualty is Bronco Pro Bowl Safety Justin Simmons.

The 30 year old Simmons has been a very good player on some bad Denver teams and perhaps might be interested in playing for a team that looks like a strong contender in 2024 such as the Packers.

Simmons has also been coached the past few seasons by someone named Christian Parker.
