We're 6 games into Hafley's NFL DC career.  Let's see how the rest of the season unfolds before worrying about losing him.

and it’s OK to enjoy the moment and be excited.  This kind of a defensive effort has not been seen in these parts for a decade, plus

If you listen to him in any of his press conferences.   Dude is squared away.

I enjoy seeing an attacking.  Unpredictable. TO creating unit.

I think that we are so conditioned over the years to expect a defensive let down which is why it is hard to enjoy the moment. and I fully admit that is me.

But, now I am coming around and this time it feels different on the defensive side of the ball.  You are so right this DC has his crap together and can flat out coach some defense.  I am do damn excited to see what the defense will look like as the players get used to it more.

Hafley has made adjustments in both players and schemes, but I'm still concerned that we can't get enough pressure with only the front 4.  We have no real "game wrecker" in that group.

Watching the game vs the Texans, I was struck by the thought that what we are seeing from the Hafley/Packers defense is another version of a "bend but don't break".

Of course, the biggest difference is scoring defense.
Hafley's unit shuts 'em down in the 2nd half.
Barry's defense... didn't.

I'd rather think of it as a "bend, but then come up with a big play" style defense. One thing that Halley is doing is "marrying" his blitzes with appropriate coverage. When blitzing / stunting he has his CBs play up to take away the "hot" read for the QB. How many times did we see Barry blitz, but have his CBs 8-10 yards off the LOS which gave the WR an easy slant. By playing press coverage you are leaving yourself more susceptible to the "go" route, but you are betting that your blitz will not give the QB enough time for that to develop.

i don't even know that this is any version of BBDB.  That idea was taken to 11 by Barry, "have to stop the big plays" and wait for offense to trip.  Hafley's D isn't bending any more than any other D that gives up yards and points.  They all do.  But he's hitting the kill switch with pressures and run blitzes at a per-series rate instead of at a per-quarter rate.  He's trying to FORCE the error with greater frequency than just waiting for the 1000 paper cuts to run out of paper.

And a few months later there are already rumblings out of Texas that his seat is starting to get a little warm. Not as hot an OC in the league right now given he has a potential superstar QB that is underperforming right now.

Yeah underperforming vs. a Super Bowl quality defense.

You cannot live only converting 3rd downs - which is what CJ was doing before. There is tape on him now & he needs to adjust. I have no doubt CJ will find a groove & improve. He's a top 10 QB

Based on the film review somebody posted from YT in the +/- thread, it sounds like he had horrible protection sunday.  From the OL to the backs to the TE. He was constantly under pressure. Some of that I'm sure is a credit to the D for making their jobs harder but the guys on the review made it sound like it wasn't so much on Stroud.  FWIW.

Completely disagree with those guys. You wanna be a premier QB in this league? You need to diagnose that defense, pre-snap. Nobody said it's easy....and the D really dialed it up and had some free rushers coming free speeding up CJ's clock forcing him to get that ball out before he wanted to.

"If a player is comfortable , doesn't it stand to reason they will be more successful?!?!"

Anyone think Joe Barry would ever say that or ACT on that??? The fact he was the DC in 2023 was fucking criminal.

The fact Barry remained DC in 2023 was a felony.

That Barry was hired in the first place was, at the very least, a gross misdemeanor.

So many things to like about MLF, including it appears bringing in Hafley, but the hiring of Barry and Drayton are not among them.

(The jury remains out on Bisaccia).

For what today’s NFL is, it’s definitely a very good defense.  I’d say that from watching the league overall, I’m not sure I’ve truly seen any team with a truly great defense.

There’s some very good ones including the Packers, but it seems like there isn’t any one defense that can slow down the very best offenses this year.

One thing I’ve noticed about the defense under Hafley, especially in the secondary, is that the number of busted coverages and miscommunication seems close to non-existent. With two rookies starting most of the season (Williams and Bullard). Strange to see that since in every defense since Charles Woodson left regardless of coordinator there have ALWAYS been coverage busts! Good coaching, for sure, and having X playing centerfield certainly helps!

A couple of interesting stats:

Packers have only given up one pass of over 40 yards all season. Teams learned after his hot start that you just can’t risk throwing deep with X back there.

Then there’s this:

@zachabson:  Eric Stokes was targeted three times against the Saints last night, allowing one catch for four yards in 29 coverage snaps. In his last five games, he's allowed six receptions on 14 targets for 22 yards and a touchdown for a 58.6 passer rating.

Stokes has problems in man coverage but he’s thriving in zone… plus tacking very well of late. A great reclamation project.

On the Anderson INT last night, if Anderson had not been in his position then Valentine was right there for the INT too. Great coverage by both.
