I plead ignorance, but how has Vujnovich looked?  I'm wondering if he's been so bad that he isn't getting reps with the ones.  If functional strength is the issue, the same was said about Bak his rookie year.

I never thought that Barclay had the feet to play at tackle, and he was very average at RT.  I just can't see him at LT.

I think the best bet is to flip Bulaga if Bak will be out indefinitely.

Vujnovich hasn't been bad IMO, but the lack of strength is much more evident than it was for Bak. He was consistently beaten by power both inside and outside and got very little push in the run game from what I saw. That's not say he was all bad, he had some moments where he looked he belonged. I had him pegged as a developmental practice squad player. Kind of reminded me of Tony Moll...I know that's not a ringing endorsement, but he seemed to have a lot of the same issues Moll had.

I agree GD. I came away less than impressed with Vujnovich. Seems like JAG. I'll add, I wasn't all that impressed by Barclay either. LT depth has me pretty concerned.

Man, the more I look at how our roster could fill out, the more I see RB and TE possibly being up for some radical change.

If I've got Kuhn on his last legs, and I've drafted the top FB in the draft, one who is showing really well on STs, I'd have a very hard time sticking with the vet and cutting the rookie.

Same with Quarless. Granted, he's had a bit of a rough go in his personal life of late, but he has not been a sure bet at TE, slipping to #2 on the depth chart. How far removed is he really from the #3? Meanwhile, we have Perillo looking great, aside from the unfortunate concussion, and a raw talent with a lot of upside in Backman.

Do we keep just 2 or 3 TEs in order to keep both Kuhn and Rip?

And, the battle for that #3 RB is looking pretty intense. Neal, Harris and Crockett. Wow. This should be fun to watch.

Think of the FB/TEs as one position group, much of their work is interchangeable and Quarless/Rodgers etc spend a fair amount of time lined up in the backfield. Kuhn + Rip + 3 TEs seems about right for that group

Then think for a moment about the 46 instead of the 53- what value does RB3 offer on gameday ? He isn't returning kicks and he isn't carrying the ball.( DuJaun Harris averaged 1.2 carry/game in 2014)

So why have him active on Sundays ? RB3 is in case of injury and to fight for Starks' position in 2016. MM may have some special packages for the guy, but unless that RB can run down fast on KR, he really hasn't got much of a role on gameday

MM said as much about the TE/FB numbers at some point during the offseason.  I also remember a comment from maybe a few years ago where they were saying it's not about a quota at each position but who are the most talented players regardless of position.  IOW, if you have 6 really good WR's and only 2 good TE's, you keep an extra WR and one less TE.

I think Harris and Crockett have shown, so far, to be better pure runners than Neal, but Neal has offered a lot of versatility. He's been used on STs and as a receiver out of the backfield...I don't see them doing those things with Harris or Crockett right now. It's still early in the preseason though. Neal's familiarity with the offense also gives him an edge. I guess really the #3 RB job will depend on what they're looking for in a RB. Neal is more of a Tony Fisher while the other two are a little more Ryan Grant IMO.
I definitely think we keep 2 FBs at this point, that kind of move is not unprecedented for McCarthy...he kept 3 FBs one season! I will be surprised if we only keep two TEs though...I'm guess they try to get the TEs a little more involved this week and in week 4 to determine who is the keeper. Perillo seems to have the edge, but Backman has the potential and somehow Mitchell Henry is figuring in to the equation.

Great points made here. Yeah, I'm agreeing with you, Satan, that they will keep both Kuhn and Rip, and that #3RB is just that. So, that RB unit being 5 players altogether, TE would have to be down to 3 max. I bet they go Rodgers, Quarless and Backman.

With 5 WR, 5RB, 3 QB, 8 OL and 3 TE, that leave the D +1, which I like. Maybe they keep 9 OL, which would not be a bad idea.

Perillo and Henry are looking really good, and both should challenge all the way through. Problem is the concussion and the broken finger, giving an edge to Backman winning out.

How about this real time from Wes Hodkiewicz:

• 14 practices in and have yet to beat LaDarius Gunter onto the field.

• Barrington and Randall with INTs in the red zone!

• Mason Crozby with his first miss of TC, a 33 yd PAT

• Kennard Backman with a nice catch in the seam

• Randall working opposite Shields, Hayward in slot

• Christian Ringo, who had a good showing in one on ones, nearly picks off on a screen. 12 then hits Nelson in stride for TD

• Randall jumps out route on Tolzien pass intended for Pinkard and nearly picks it

• Rodgers hits Rodgers on two point try

And from Michael Cohen:

• CB LaDarius Gunter has been ahead of both Randall and Rollins in a number of drills today. He has played opposite Shields a few times.

• Brief skirmish breaks out between CB Ryan White and an offensive player. Looked like it might have been Janis, not sure.

• Nice catch for TE Kennard Backman down the middle. He's bounced back nicely from major drop issues early in camp.

• Casey Hayward is the holder today...on kickoffs for Mason Crosby.

• Datone Jones just beat Barclay badly with a spin move. Not good.

• Hundley and Blanchard intercepted on back-to-back plays. Barrington got the first one and Randall the second in red-zone work.

• Beautiful spin by Adrian Hubbard on Vince Kowalski for an easy "sack"

• A lot of D-linemen and OLBs working on spin moves today in 1-on-1 pass rush.

• Barclay with a solid rep against Mike Neal in 1-on-1 pass rush. Neal, frustrated, was cursing as he walked away.

• Janis with a brutal drop in the end zone during 1-on-1s. Ball hit him in the chest with no defender nearby.

• Bulaga, Barclay, Walker, Vujnovich and Ebbele are working at tackle today.

• A lot of weird ball flights from Masthay today on punts. Spiral, end over end, sideways spin, wounded duck -- you name it.

• Aaron Rodgers yelling at the refs for marking a ball short of the end zone. "Come on! Come on! Come on!"

• Rodgers taunting the defense after throwing a touchdown, and then the defense heckles him like crazy when his pass got batted down.

• Hubbard rockets into the backfield to record a tackle for loss, and that will end practice.

 And Rob Demovsky:

• Couple of rookie 6th-round picks standing out today: DT Christian Ringo with a couple wins in 1-on-1s and TE Kennard Backman with a TD catch

• LaDarius Gunter has been working with the No. 1 nickel. He and Shields outside plus Hayward, Hyde and Ha Ha. Interesting no Rollins/Randall

• Back to back red zone INTs: Barrington got Hundley and Randall got Blanchard.

• Brian Bulaga's unbeaten streak in the 1-on-1 is over. After winning the first 11 reps, Julius Peppers finally got him.

• Clay Matthews is practicing for the second straight day. Did only individual drills yesterday.

• Tim Masthay not hitting the ball well today. I put my stopwatch away cuz I thought punting competition was over when they cut Cody Mandell.

And Andy McDonnel:

• ... Rookie Damarious Randall nearly made a RIDICULOUS one-handed pick on an out-route he jumped

• D-line looked REAL GOOD in pass rush one-on-one drills with the O-line... especially rookie Christian Ringo

thx for the updates Trophies

Putting Gunter ahead of Randall and Rollins does two things: It gives Gunter a chance with the ones, and it makes the high draft picks fight for a spot

Quantity begets Quality thru competition

Go Packers

Yeah, I agree.

Gunter has been a real surprise throughout. Love the guy's work ethic too. He wants desperately to win a job. Tenacious D!

Really happy to see Barrington get a pick! Hopefully this turn the faucet ON for him in coverage. He's definitely got the motor. While I haven't been real high on him, it is only because he has been lacking in forcing TOs.

Ringo's day is encouraging. I'd like to see this kid win a roster spot. Dude can get to the QB, which would be a big plus. Datone seems to have had a good run in this dept as well of late. Hopefully his game turns into a really productive one on the field.

Backman could be the guy that takes over that #3 TE spot. I've felt all along that Kennard Backman would be that go-to slot TE McCarthy has been wanting to employ for a while now. Hopefully he keeps making plays. In practice, you can see how easily he turns the ball upfield for more yards after a reception. The guy has a motor.

Also, Damarious Randall. What a player he will be for us. The guy can range with the best of them, and he forces TOs. Super athletic player.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious."

What separates Whitt and Moss is their ability to teach guys how to play a position and extract every bit of ability out of them. Whitt does what a coach is supposed to do before he lets his rating scale sort out his depth chart. Moss not so much. I don't think Trgovac is particularly adept at it either.

I think the best guys are starting for Moss and Trgo. I just don't think those guys are learning much from either guy though.

Love Whitt's rating system and how open he his with it for the players. Rather than being secret, he puts it out there so they all know where they stand. Keeps the competition level high, too. The guy on top has a target on his back every day.

Ted just finished a radio interview with a GB station. Some snippets:

@ByRyanWood: #Packers GM Ted Thompson on @markdanielsWNFL radio show. He says team's mindset is "next man up" after Jordy Nelson injury.

@ByRyanWood: Thompson on Nelson: "You can't understand how something like that can happen on a play as simple as it was, but that's life in the NFL."

@ByRyanWood: Thompson on temptation to get outside help to replace Jordy Nelson: "We're not singling out the WR position just because this has happened."

@WesHod: Ted Thompson to @markdanielsWNFL on how long he'll do this: I feel good. Depends on how much complaining I hear at the grocery store
