You fail to look at the Packers in comparison to the average. As far as drafting. Here is a 2023 article that places us 6th https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/04...s-at-picking-players

Here is one from 2022 that has us 5th. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story...lue-2012-rank-all-32

There is no way you can label our drafting as "mediocre".

You can't be the youngest team in the league two years in a row and make the playoffs in both years and have poor drafting.  That alone is obvious that the Packers are above average in the draft department.

But it's also the case that Gute has done a great job bringing in FA's, and also getting rid of guys who have overstayed their welcome.  I expect Jaire to be in that group next year.

Per MLF this afternoon:

@WesHod:   LaFleur: "I would expect Ja, most likely, is going to be down the rest of the year."

LaFleur confirmed Jaire Alexander is having knee surgery.

More from Schefter.

@AdamSchefter:    As it turns out, Packers Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday to alleviate his pain and swelling, per source. He could make it back for Super Bowl if Packers made it that far.

Ja's agent.

So the obvious question is why didn't our medical staff recommend surgery right after the injury occurred?

@bdplant posted:

Maybe they did.

Or, maybe the knee wasn't healing properly over time, and it was recently determined surgery was the route to go. Bahktiari, while different circumstances, couldn't get the swelling to go away after multiple surgeries and infection.

The easy way out is to direct anger at the player for not "toughing it out" because he "got paid". That doesn't seem to be Jaire's MO in my opinion.

Surgeons get paid by operating. But 4 surgeons I have been involved with except one , has tried to avoid cutting until all options have been tried

Yup…I have a friend who specializes in recovery medicine…he does all the latest stuff in his practice ranging from hyperbaric chamber, cryo-therapy, stem cell injections…all the latest non-surgical interventions. That has become first line injury treatment for every major sport…I am sure they exhausted every option before putting him under a knife. Ditto that for Bakhtiari.

I’ll be the first to throw blame if it’s warranted, but I think this was just bad luck. I don’t think anyone fucked up.

Not conceding the playoffs, but it may be that this team is not "quite there" yet? Two FA acquisitions similar to Jacobs & X may put us there.

You are one of my favorite posters here, and they are one player away.

It's just that the player is someone like Reggie White.

You can find RBs and safeties in free agency. Maybe they can get a #1 type WR in free agency (Davante Adams?).

You aren't likely to get edge rushers or shutdown corners in free agency. The good ones at those positions never get to that point. It's why Gutey overpaid for Alexander and Gary. They weren't getting anyone near that good in the draft and they couldn't afford to not have at least an above average guy at that position.

I don't have favorite posters outside of YA, but if I did you'd be at the top of my list.

That said, among the players currently in the top 10  in sacks, it looks like #1 (tied), 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 (that is the majority) were all signed as free agents.  I am not contending that all 6 of these guys are great players, but I do believe top pass rushers can be signed or traded for.

PS I left #11 on the list to note that 2nd year players drafted in round 1 can also be productive pass rushers.

To me, it's 6 players. Assuming JA is gone, and since the others have been repeatedly torched like creme brulè, I'd say 2 corners, 1 center, 1 edge, 1 linebacker that can cover, 1 DL to replace KC. All of them need to be better than the JAG's we're used to.

I think we can get an edge in FA.

So did he wait on deciding to get surgery to guarantee an injury protection payment from the Packers?

If he wasn't considered injured when the new league year starts for '25 he would have gotten nothing.  Now he'll get a fully repaired knee and an extra $2.1m.

I have been beyond frustrated with Alexander these last couple of years because the guy is starting to get in Kevin King territory for the amount of time that he is on the field.   BUT, I do feel they should give it one more shot next season with him to see if they can get him on the field.

IMHO the Packers are in a huge spot here because when he gets on the field he is one of the best to in the NFL but at the same time can they afford to hold a roster spot every year hoping he can suit up?

Farrah Faucet was hot no doubt back in the day, but I liked Cheryl Ladd was way better looking to me.

I think GB was hoping he would stay healthy for a whole season - for a change.  That hasn't worked out very well.  About the only player living up to expectations is Carrington.  I sense a remake of the CB position this coming off season.  Whether they get rid of Alexander or not, they need better backups and another player who could start.  Just the way I see as of now.

Jaclyn Smith over both of them.

The Vikings and Texans basically swapped the aged Hunter for the freelancing Greenard. Van Noy and Fowler have been around, as well.

Van Ginkel is the guy I and others thought Gutekunst should have pursued. Versatile player with a reasonable contract. Rubbing some salt in it is McDonald and Bonitto being on the list.

Packers will have around $70mm in cap space for the upcoming FA season. Cutting Ja will not be a financially driven decision.

If we keep JA for one more season his cap hit for next season and the year after will be around 17 million. So the question will be "is he worth that much based on; 1) performance. 2) Availability. Since his shoulder injury in 2021, while being our best CB, he has not been elite. Furthermore, he has missed half (34) of his last 68 games. If we part ways with him he will be a 7 million $ cap hit next season and zero the year after.

But, don't the Packers have a lot of their own to sign who have expiring contracts?

Nope. Back before training camp it was just Love and Kenny Clark, and they've both re-upped.

Unless you think Josh Myers is important.
