McGinn's podcast on Perry a must-listen. Offers great, great insight and analysis: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/143684556.html
Listening to his radio interview, he sounded pretty damn happy to be a Packer. He sounds excited to play opposite of Clay.
Football Outsiders has Nick Perry as number one prospect for sacks in 2012 draft: http://www.footballoutsiders.c...s/2012/sackseer-2012
You guys crack me up. Of course he has some weaknesses. He was drafted at 28 not No.1. The question is, how relevant are these weaknesses. To come here and list those weaknesses serves no purpose.

Hopefully, Fred Carr reincarnated.
Maybe he can take on the nickname "mad dog" again.

Questioning Nick Perry's fit in a 3-4
The questions are there, but in TT I trust.
The more and more I hear the less I like the pick. McGinn's podcast states Perry flat out said he wanted to play with his hand down. Please draft another OLB.
The criticβs maybe right about Perry, but Ted and his staff get paid to know when they are wrong. A little negativity by these TV analysts is ok with me. Their kind in general are way to optimistic about how well a player will do in the NFL.
McGinn has also panned the picks of Worthy and Hayward. As to Worthy, he cites scouts that this is a "boom or bust" pick. For Hayward, he quotes scouts that Hayward has average speed, is at best a nickel back, and was the 11th rated CB on the board and others rated higher were still available.
We'll know in about 8 months.

Upshaw may ave been a safer pick but Perry has a much higher ceiling. If Dom and Greene can draw out his potential he could be a star. But a lot of that depends on what Worthy brings to the table. If the D line provides zero push like last year then it's going to make it tough on Perry, as CM3 found out last year.
The best case scenario is teams have to account for Worthy which helps Raji and the Packers get a much better push up the middle so Perry and CM3 can go to work.
I'm probably in the minority but I watched a lot of USC games over the past 3 years and I really like the guy.

Scouts and analysts were pretty polarized about Raji, Rodgers, and Matthews also. There's no harm in giving these guys a chance.
Truthfully, there hasn't been a pick yet that's gotten me completely pumped yet, but I also don't watch a lot off college ball and didn't follow the draft as closely this year. Plenty of time for one of those guys to get taken this year, and if not, the crop we do get will have their chance to produce.

The only people whining about Perry are the Bobby buShea slurpers.
Perry is a beast

his name could easily be switched to the gay one in some boy band

I'd say that to his face too
I would

I like this guy. Very good first pick. He will have Greene coaching him up. Along with the 2nd pick GB now has the tools to generate pressure.
My only concern is making the transition when he has stated he wanted to play with his hand down and bulked up to position himself as a 4-3 DE. Sounds like he's got all the tools, hopefully the conversion is painless.
Relax Mother Henya.
Dude put up some sick combine numbers as a 271 pounder
http://www.nfl.com/combine/pro...ick-perry?id=2533048
I think he played at U$C at around 255.
Think what kind of numbers he could pop out at if he was down that 15 again.
I think he got some advice from an agent or coach that said teams were looking stronger at him at DE in a 4-3
I think he is going to be the SOTD.
Little Trojan power on the other OLB to keep him motivated and KG in his grill.

I have tempered optimism.
4-3 DE's get paid better. If I was a guy who could do either that would make it a pretty simple choice.
This is the pick I'm least excited about so far. For such a great athlete, I guess I expected to see more 3 second sacks (ie: beat the OT off the snap or with 1 move and sack the QB before he has time to look at his first option). Didn't really see a lot of that in his hightlights. I saw more sacks due to consistent pursuit, which is surprising b/c usually it's the opposite with top athletes. He also seemed to be too high, not getting under the pads of the OT. CMIII excels at this, so hopefully he can teach Perry a few things. I guess the 4.5 speed doesn't impress me like it does some. Terrell Suggs ran a 4.7 in college and that didn't mean a thing. It's the 3 cone that scares me, b/c that seems more applicable to a pass rusher.
My hope is that going to GB with CMIII gives him a familiar face, and CMIII and Greene can mold this kid into the pass rusher he has the ability to become.

Me too. I assumed nobody running a 3-4 would pick him. The Pack knows more than I do though. Hopefully they uncovered a diamond in the rough.
He played elephant @ USC before the scheme change, so he's played standing up before.
Kiper's book (which was published weeks ago) had him going to Green Bay @ 28, so it apparently was no secret that he had been in the mix for being selected at that spot for quite a while.
He's a more explosive and athletic than Upshaw, but I think Upshaw would have been a safer pick.
I have faith that Greene will eventually be able to turn him into an effective bookend to CMIII.

I'm with you. I think the Bears chose the guy who fit more what the Packers needed and the Packers got the guy the Bears should have drafted. Hopefully he can re-transition (?) back to the Elephant slot but my optimism is somewhat guarded. HGe should be able to bring teh rush well enough but will he be a complete linebacker or another hole in pass coverage when he drops like Walden, Hawk, Bishop, etc.

My guess is he is a "football player" and his whole decision the last couple of years because of USC turmoil was crafted by a frickin agent.
Now that he gets to just focus on a position, team and listening to pro coaching, his talent will shine.
If he has the hunger that CMIII has, I'm thinkin we'll be happy.

Not a knock on Nick Perry but most athletes don't have the hunger that Clay has - that's what makes him so special.
We'll see ... Greene does mental things with talent.

Hate highlight tape in terms of getting ones hopes up, only watching a players best snaps from an entire season.
Here is one game film of Perry against NFL level talent : Stanford 2011
obviously playing down in 43 alignment
Tell me what you see, I was busy looking for Kalil's mom in the stands.

Looking at all those games, he was asked to do too much at his weight IMO.
when he was where he should be, he did fine.

Good article from Lori Nickel
USC D Line coach Ed Orgeron.
Worth the read. Link
quote:"You know what, I'm open-minded," Perry said Friday morning. "I was open-minded about this whole process. I knew I could get picked to a 3-4 team as well as a 4-3 team. I knew I could go anywhere and I don't have to adjust to anything. I felt like I had the ability, I have the skills to play in the 3-4 and I love the scheme that the Packers are in."
USC D Line coach Ed Orgeron.
quote:"Packers got them a hell of a player. Orgeron could not say enough good things about Perry. For starters, he's good against the run, too; he just doesn't get the same recognition for it yet as he does for the sacks.
But one play stands out last year for showcasing all Perry had to offer.
"We had a blitz called," said Orgeron. "The quarterback changes the protection. He was supposed to drop. We changed the front - so Nick rushes. And he knew the back was going to come across the formation to block him. He beats the back, has a sack fumble. He picks up the ball and gives us the ball on the 1-yard line against Notre Dame. That's a pretty impressive play.
"Goes to show you his awareness, that he can make adjustments in the game. He's a drop end, a rush end, knows the protection. "I know he can do both; everybody does a little bit," said Orgeron. "The good thing about Nick at 275 - he can play against a tackle. He damn sure can whip a tight end. And he can drop. The guy is talented. He's very explosive. The thing about Nick is he has a very strong lower body and he plays with great leverage.
"And he's not finished. He could have used another year with me, so the defensive line coach there is going to do a good job there with him and I think you're going to see a guy who gets better through the years."

What do I think? Andrew Luck is really good and Kalil's mom is in section 8 row 10.

HUGE!!
We really don't need Perry to be a "stud". We just need him to be average to make CM3 and the DL better. So I will try to resist being disappointed if he doesn't make the highlight reel. But I'll be pleased as pie if his presence lets CM3 and Raji/Pickett/Worthy end up on it.
I like Nick Perry, but I wouldn't put any stock into anything Ed Orgeron has to say. That guy is the biggest scumbag and liar in the NCAA.
