This makes TWO underclassmen by Thompson? Both from major programs.

Cracks me up "under-achiever"...if'n everyone was perfect, they'd all be number ones. Sometimes I think whoever writes some of this stuff must be trying to squeeze water out of a rock.

Sounds like a good pick. We'll see...we'll see.
He showed up big against good competition and put plenty of first round worthy plays on film. Showed flashes of absolute dominance, and to get that at #51 is incredible value.

I've watched a lot of games with Worthy involved, and he doesn't always show up to play. In fact, he freaking took downs off - especially passing downs at times.

I have faith in our coaches, but this is the classic boom or bust type choice. If he really works hard and dedicates himself we'll go back and call Tschmack an idot, but I'd say there's a 50% chance he is out of the league in two or three years.

I would suppose about anyone, who saw any other player, in their division, could say the same thing. I can't argue.

BUT.

The evidence is there that he can be ...

TRADE UP!

Nice to start out with a chip on his shoulder.

Can't disagree with this.

Sure you can disagree. In fact I'd be happy to make any wager that the statement that there is a 50 percent chance that he is out of the league in 2/3 years is dead wrong. Great pick at 51 even if you don't like MSU. Maybe we'll get lucky and get Cousins later on
Scouts on him:

quote:
Dominated in the Spartans’ Big Ten Conference championship game loss to Wisconsin. β€œI like him,” a scout said. β€œWhen I first saw him he flashed, sort of knocked you out. He’s like a get-off (the snap) freak. I’ve never seen anybody get off like this. He gets off the ball, he cheats, he led the NCAA in offsides (penalties), but he just has a great sense for get-off and all that stuff. But I thought he was a little bigger than he is. If you said, take away his get off and what is he? Honestly, he’s just an average player. But he makes so many plays on his get off. If they start hard counting him in the NFL and he can’t use his get off, he might not be a great player. But when he gets off he’s really good.” Entering the draft after his redshirt junior season. Three-year starter had 27Β½ tackles for loss and 12 sacks in his career, including 10Β½ and 3Β½ last season. Blocked three kicks in his career. Ran the 40 in 5.04 seconds, had 28Β½-inch vertical jump at the combine. Didn’t bench at the combine because of a pectoral injury. β€œHe can dominate, and then he takes his plays off, just like a bunch of (defensive linemen) do,” another scout said. β€œWorthy’s makeup is spotty. Weight, work ethic, etc. It goes with the territory of defensive linemen.”

He's the 51st pick. We're not talking about taking a Raji at #9. Guys this size take plays off.
The league us filled with guys like Worthy. Guys who dogged it in games in college at times.

What is important is that he has the tools. Guys like Johnny Jolly lasted to the 6th round for a reason, too. The way I see it, he is a lot like Jolly. He could be as good, too (or better), and that will mean he'll be the knd of difference maker the team desperately needed.

Multi million dollar contracts have the tendency to motivate freaks like Worthy. Don't be so pessimistic. I almost like this pick more than Perry because I think improving the 5-tech spot will go a long ways towards improving the pass rush.

I can see why you feel that way about Worthy, but professional coaches, professional training, and most of all professional money will motivate this kid to be an absolute beast.

Give me a break.

I really liked Greg Jones. Very productive and he worked his tail off. I don't mind Cousins either. I think he's limited somewhat physically and athletically, but he's a gamer and has good leadership skills. Must mean I hate M$U Roll Eyes

Based on some of the responses on this thread I'm not the only one worried about him.

Multi million dollar contracts also have a way of making lazy players even more lazy. There are a number of examples of this in the league.
This guy actually showed up at times in college. Friggen Poe was drafted in the Top 12 and did nothing at Memphis in a patsy conference. Worthy played like a man among boys at times. He ate Georgia up in their bowl game too.

I hate MSU but Worthy is one heck of a football player. He instantly improves the run D and will help collapse the pocket on passing downs. I really thought a few weeks back he would be the pick at #28. To get him at 51 just throwing in a 4th to move up was a steal.

And those multi-million dollar deals got reduced with the collective bargaining deal for rookies.
Why did he come out early then? Did he need the money? Sure, it might be second round dough, but it's still a lot of money (relatively speaking).

He would have been better off going back to Michigan State and cleaning up his act. Instead of only showing up in half of their games, maybe he makes the leap and gets picked a lot earlier.

JJ Watt had it figured out. Have a great junior year, then come out and get picked in the top 15, and then play pretty well as a rookie. He was ready.

Then again, Watt's work ethic is probably 10 times that of Worthy.
I think down the road, we will like this guy. I doubt he sets the world on fire as a rookie because most guys in his position don't. But he needs to at the very least be a solid rotational guy as a rookie who can flash his talent in key spurts. He's coming out a year early so he's still maturing.

He'll be useful as a rookie and will help. In a couple years he could be really really good.
The debate begins and the kid hasn't even been in the league 24 hours. He's a big, strong, athletic kid that fills a significant need on the roster. He'll show up in camp, compete and hopefully push guys like Wynn and Wilson a little further down the depth chart. Big dudes like him don't grow on trees. The questionable motor thing or taking plays off is over-stated when the draft rolls around by the "experts" IMO.

Question: Does he have any serious injuries in his past?
I agree, bubbleboy...Thompson is one of the best, if not THE best, in the game. (See, e.g., the 2010-2011 Packers, during which they won a Super Bowl and went 15-1). How anyone would not give him the benefit of the doubt these days is beyond me. When he initially took over, I wasn't a believer. But these days, the man walks on water in my eyes.

I'm loving this draft.
