I haven't seen a thread for him and I think his latest concussion deserves one.  His concussion last week wasn't a big time, helmet-to-helmet collision and that's the red flag for me.  He's at the point now where even if he's "cleared" by doctors, his career is clearly in jeopardy.  He's going to get harder than he was hit last week and that just means more concussions.  Some players just aren't made for the NFL grind and Shields is looking more and more like he's one of those guys.  Bummer b/c when he's on his game, he's damn good.  Crazy to think he played 1 year of CB in college and was able to be our nickelback his rookie year, contributing to a Super Bowl.  The football fan in me wants him to come back.  But I just don't think that's a good idea.

Shields Concussion History

If he is out all year and possibly indefinitely, I think the Packers are in good shape.  The youth works against them but the talent and coaching is there.  Randall looks damn good.  Rollins had a rough day but we saw the talent his rookie year.  Gunther is raw but again, we've seen the talent so hopefully he just needs reps to get more consistency.  And Hyde could easily move back to nickel.  Only reason he was moved to safety was because they had Shields, Hayward, Randall and Rollins at CB last year.  Now that two are gone, expect to see Hyde in the slot more often.  Not perfect but the talent and with Whitt, they may be ok.  Just gotta stay healthy.......

Very reminiscent to Nick Collins or J Mike, or Sterling Sharpe for that matter. Guys that left the game in their prime due to injuries.

Not a doctor and certainly can't get into SS head but I would guess there is a fair chance he may retire in the near future.

Definitely not a good sign that he had a bad one at the end of last year, and then had another in the first game of this year on what didn't seem to be a big hit. Just a layman, but that doesn't look good.

If Shields is susceptible to concussions I think he should retire.  He will live longer than he will play.  There is a reason that TT has stockpiled all that depth in the defensive backfield.

In a seemingly unrelated move - GB is moving Herb Waters from WR to CB.  Both are from Miami.  Coincidence? I don't think so.

It's premature to be discussing the possibility of Shields retirement, forced or not. Let's give it at least another week. Trust our doctors for the safety concerns, and trust Shields to make his own decisions after that.
If it should turn out he needs extended time off, he could be considered for IR-DTR, if not even going on IR for this year. Lots of options to consider.

Last year Shields' concussion was from him slamming his head on the ground while making a tackle, this year it was from making a tackle (did not see the play). There is helmet-to-helmet contact on nearly every play, it is only called when the tackler obviously leads with his head. The only way you are going to avoid it is if you eliminate helmets & turn the game into rugby.

You do realize that rugby also has a concussion problem, right? As long as you have these massive guys running into each other with force, that will always happen.

Shields' tackle was not a penalty because the receiver was a runner, not an unprotected receiver. Besides, I seem to remember that the guy fell on Shields' head as well.

Actually I think Sam's head was crunched by the second guy in on the tackle. I saw a RB get an incidental knee to the head yesterday when he was already on the ground. There are so many ways to sustain these injuries.

GB will do what's in the best interest of Sam. Remember, this is the same organization who turned down Terrence Murphy's offer of signing a written release of liability in any event he got hurt while playing (he was the WR diagnosed with cervical stenosis and risked spinal cord injury). I believe Nick Collins also made a similar offer. They aren't going to risk his long term health.

However, I could easily see TT drafting a CB in the top 3rounds knowing at any point, Shields career could end.  Rollins/Randall look like really good picks thus. And who knows, maybe #36 , already on the roster, is a budding starter.

Sam is the 3rd highest paid player on the roster behind Rodgers and Matthews....  12th highest paid CB in the league.  Not to **** on the injured guy, but I don't see the production to meet that kind of salary in the first place.  If he retires.... I'm okay with it.

While I'm on the subject of salary, WTF is Peppers still doing on the roster as the 4th highest paid guy on the team?  He has clearly declined and it looks like the defense is phasing him out.

I'd love to say let's wait and see what they do with Peppers now that we aren't playing in a Sauna; however, if a guy can't handle a decent amount of snaps in those conditions is he really worth $10 million?

Plus the way way Perry played, he deserves the PT over him.

I think they're saving what he has left for the late run.

Perhaps.  I guess the whole "getting rid of a player 1 year too soon is better than 1 year too late" doesn't always apply.

It's early... but Peppers looked like garbage in the preseason and did absolutely nothing in week 1.  I'm a little surprised Peppers' production versus salary isn't a point of contention here.

Honestly, I don't think they were playing him much.  I don't know if they are trying to keep him fresh for later in the year but he didn't have many snaps in the first game.   I'm sure the hell hoping that if Peppers was flaming out in TC and he sat because of bad play they would've cut that contract in a hurry.  I think it's the former right now.

Regarding Peppers, they're playing it smart.  Having a fresh pass rusher like Peppers in December is just smart.  Just look at how Demarcus Ware's season went last year.  Guy barely played in the regular season so was fresh to tear it up in the playoffs, and he did.  Now if the Packers can't get pressure on the QB in the regular season, yes, they need to play Peppers more.  But that wasn't an issue against Jacksonville.  Perry looked damn good.

Back to the topic of the thread.........Shields is at a crossroads right now.  You can kick the can down the road but they're not going to know more next week or the week after.  That's not how concussions work.  Symptoms may subside but doctors can't conclusively say it's "safe" for Sam to go back on the field.

Last concussion he had kept him out a month so you have to expect longer this time (especially with Packers's docs conservative history with head and neck injuries).  Yeah each concussion is different but pretty sure you don't recover faster as you get more concussions.  Guess we'll see but really hope he thinks about his long term health.

Peppers is making 7 million this year in base with a 10.5 million cap hit.  I'd have cut his ass LONG before letting Sitton go.

You don't "rest" players making that kind of scratch until we really need them.  Players at that salary are supposed to be difference makers, not insurance policies.

Agree.  I think we're going to see some issues in Dallas and NE at some point at the QB position.  NE probably won't happen until the off season though.  If memory serves, Brady's dad believes his boy won't take it well when he gets the inevitable hook.

Thing is, that shoulder injury is gonna put Tom Terrific back in the driver's seat, possibly for a long time. Wasn't Don Makowski's career torpedoed by something similar?

In 1992, the Majick Man injures his ankle and Favre comes in and throws 2 TD passes to beat the Bengals.  Don Majkowski never sees the field again for GB.  Not like the Brady situation.  Here is the history:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Majkowski

This is a slightly expanded version of FANDAME comment.  Besides, I probably need to up my post count anyway.

Brady honestly believes he's going to play until he's 50. Delusional.
