There have been rumblings, but now Rapport is reporting the possibility of Thompson stepping into a new role at the end of this season.  There was a post on NFL.com and the GBPG picked it up.

************

Ian Rapport also as an interesting note at the end of this Sunday post for Around the NFL regarding the future of Packers general manager Ted Thompson:

From Rapoport:

If you're looking for a surprise, the Packers could be it. While the coaching staff may tinker after the season, including possibly OC Edgar Bennett likely getting head coach interviews, it is expected to have minimal changes. The front office, however, is a different story. GM Ted Thompson is under contract through 2018, but this could be the year he steps aside and becomes a senior scouting adviser. If Green Bay has success in the playoffs, that possibility increases. There are a few reasons why: First of all, Director of Football Operations Eliot Wolf is coveted and he'll have opportunities to interview as a GM elsewhere. The organization could risk losing him if he's not promoted. Second of all, CEO Mark Murphy still hasn't hired his own guy, and he's been around the organization much more this year as he studies things from the inside. There are plenty of talented people in the Packers front office -- VP Russ Ball, Director of Player Personnel Brian Gutekunst and Senior Personnel Executive Alonzo Highsmith among them. And this could be the year Thompson steps aside to make way for them.

Wouldn't surprise me. Ted has never liked the spotlight that comes with being GM, he's a grinder who seems to genuinely love scouting. Not saying I want him to leave, I think he's among the top 3 GMs in the league, but transitioning back to a scouting role as his career winds down would be ideal for him and GB IMO. Having one of the leagues best talent evaluators just be an advisor to young, energetic GM with a fresh perspective would be a great thing.

So the storyline is: "This could be the year." LMAO.  What a scoop.  Yes indeed it might.

I mean ugh, can we at least wait until the off-season to propagate rumors about what might happen in the off-season?

NFL media and their rumors drive me nuts sometimes.  Most of it probably originates from reporters for eliminated teams with nothing else to talk about. In other words, losers.

Yeah this might be the year Thompson steps down.  In other news, I might blow a load of diarrhea out of my asshole later on this morning.

These are really smart people running this organization- this seems like a logical move. Wolf has his shot, and the Packers are wise to pull the trigger now. The team saw how the fanbase began to turn- not just the fringe folks who jump around after a single loss... they played with fire this year.

Time for fresh views and a philosophy that includes free agency.

I wouldn't give up TT for Eliot unless TT is planning on stepping down in the next couple of years. Sorry, TT is that special.

100%. Promote Eliot if TT wants to step down, but if not then you keep the guy in place.

Would rather see Murphy go after Schneider. From GB, proven himself as an exec, knows McCarthy, heck schneiders wife introduced McCarthy to his new wife. Will be interesting.

As will the drama that may unfold in Minneapolis should the wilfs start cleaning house.

I'm not sold on Schnieder because of the way he has ignored O line in Sea.   Maybe he thinks he doesn't need it because the midget Wilson needs to create his own passing lanes anyway, but I prefer the Dallas approach.

Schneider would be great if he wasn't locked in to a new deal with Seattle. They got rid of the "can leave for GB" option with this most recent deal. Wolf may not have been born in GB, but he's grown up professionally in a winning system.

Wolf is a part of the system. Draft and develop. Chicks in the barn. Yadda-yadda-yadda.

Harlan started it with Ron. They had a slight hiccup with Sherman and as soon as possible they went back to the proven process with Thompson.

When Ted does step down, if it Murphy does not promote from within, he should be on the next train out of town.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And right now the system Harlan initiated with Wolf has (for the most part) been working since '92.

I think the Packers system can best be described as :

Find an all-time talent at quarterback;

Exploit that talent for consistent success while winning an occasional Superb Owl.

I like TT.  I think he's found talent in unusual ways and places- not least McCarthy. His greatest skill may be matching contracts to ability. He builds the team to make the playoffs. That makes sense as in-season dominance doesn't really correlate to championships.

But without AR no one is lamenting the possibility of Thompson's departure. Because without Rodgers the Packers are an every third or 4th year playoff team like the rest of the QB deficient teams

RapSheet has the best inside sources at 1265 Lombardi. This is indisputable. Plus he isn't a click monger. So when he publishes, pay attention. Somebody wanted this out on the eve of the last week of the season... under the radar, low key... sounds like TT, MM, Murphy, really the whole acquisition and ops chain. Releasing this now makes sense on about 10,000 different levels as does the scenario. They just keep doing what they keep doing.

Digressing, you follow packersnews.com, @RapSheet, @Ben_FennellNFL, the local ESPN crew, and of course x4, that's all you need.

Yes! This would be GREAT news...Elliott would make the Packers relevant in free Agency again, and this team can FINALLY start obtaining some veteran depth for when injuries occur. No excuse for not using FA..NONE. TT almost never did...that's why the Packers have only been to 1 SB in his tenure. Even Arodg has privately said "can we just sign a big name FA..just once, please"?? Elliott will be more like his dad..Ron never hesitated to use FA, or make trades.

Would be great if Thompson signed a vet FA now and again.

Help me out with one or two.

IMO this is a classic 1265 planned leak. It serves as a trial balloon for organization, players, fans, league opinion leaders. Quietly floated when other league news dominates the coverage. But the insiders throughout the league see this and will react.

Helps dissuade other organizations from chasing Eliot. Also makes Eliot feel that it is coming his way, so why move.

Entire process being described is one of calm, orderly evaluation and decision making. What TT values highly. A process. This perpetuates notion that the Packers are a well oiled machine when it comes to going about its business. This is not unimportant in coach and player recruitment and retention. Also for a fan base which is once again accustomed to quiet, steady excellence on and off the field.

Ted is no fool, nor MM. They like and trust their processes.

"Even Arodg has privately said..."

OK.  I guess you're Olivia Munn.  Or Munn's personal shoe shopper.

That the Packers front office is a well oiled machine is no notion.

it is a time proven FACT.....

Eliot Wolf is interviewing with SF for the GM position in the next few days.

I can't possibly believe he'd leave GB to work for Jed York.

Rapoport tweet that just came out.
