Thought all three QBs did some good things and the passing game was impressive. The Joe Philbin Effect? Boyle is the only QB who looks comfortable in the pocket and if he continues to play well Packers can forget about stashing him on the PS. All three rookie wideouts ooze potential and MVS does look a bit like Moss when he plays (size and speed).  Moore just needs to catch the ball and think he'll overcome the dropsies.

Liked most of what I saw from Burks and Gilbert continues to impress me. Thought Jackson did well and Rollins did nothing to indicate he'll make the final cut.

Hundley looked fine, but he often looked fine on the first drive last year. That scripted first drive generally ends in points. I think that had more to do with his pulling the trigger faster and making better decisions.

Kizer looked better than Hundley IMO, he didn't have the benefit of that scripted drive. I thought his improv skills and decision making were good, he wasn't throwing INTs which is a change for him. His throws were really inconsistent though, sometimes he put air under balls that should have been darts and vice versa.

Boyle looked pretty sharp, I'd like to see how he does against better competition though.

The first D was fine I thought despite missing most of the key starters. The interior looked fine, but the OLBs were awful at setting the edge. That first drive was killed by OLBs and Quinten Rollins. Burks looks a lot better than I expected, I saw him read some plays wrong and fill the wrong gap between the tackles, but sideline to sideline he was really impressive. I liked what Jackson did also, he's going to get called for penalties this year...very physical and grabby with receivers (which is better than being soft on receivers like Randall).

Nice hangtime from Opie. Wish he would have dropped more inside the 20 though.

Didn't read the thread but I'm glad to see the post above saying what my eyes told me - Boyle looked like the most NFL caliber prospect.  We'll see if he can continue to bring it but great start.

Martini is a big man.  Saw him do some good things, saw him get lost in the shuffle.  Scott is as advertised.

And either the Titans don't have good CB depth or we've got guys that can run by ya finally.  I think it was a bit of the former moreso.

There was the one rookie (or young) CB the Titans have that the announcers said ran in the 4.2's, so there is some speed there. MVS looked fast and I thought ESB moved well for a big man. I don't think we have the "speed" people were hoping for, but I don't think our group is slow.

Have only seen some highlights so far but a few thought...

MVS showed very well.  Some of his catches were fairly pitch-and-catch but the two contested catches, especially in the EZ were impressive.  That kind of ability to win balls in traffic will get you on the field this season.  Really like his length and speed - not just long speed but acceleration.   Special for a big guy like him.

Moore - he's doing all the things he rolls out of bed with.  Catching is his demon right now but the good news is you can teach that.  James Jones, Jordy and even Adams struggled with some drops as rookies.  He can improve there.

Boyle/Doyle/O'Malley has the tools but it's pretty early in the development process for him.  He played some pretty vanilla O vs a pretty vanilla D last night. I would not expect him to look nearly as good dropped into a 1's vs. 1's environment.  It would be foolish to expect otherwise.  But he sure looks like he could be worth a couple years' investment.

Baby giraffe - I wouldn't take too much away from last night.  I'm sure he's using the PS to experiment with his distance/hangtime ratios.  Like KK said earlier, everyone's working on their craft right now.

Can't wait to watch the replay this weekend.

Trying to decide who was worse, Rollins or Byron Bell. It's hard to allow 6 pressures in only 33 passing snaps !! Damn he looked terrible. J'mon Moore better get his head on straight- drops were the big knock on him at Mizzou.

Said it last year, and though its way early,  Reggie Gilbert has a motor and is a player. He could be the first option behind Clay and Perry. Really disruptive and anchored nicely on some run plays.

Honestly there was nothing from any of the OLBs to get excited about. They got no movement against the Titan's 1's. The Titans have a good OL, so you wouldn't expect them to dominate, but they got bullied on that first drive...no edge containment at all and bad angles when they actually did have opportunities. Connor Barwin and Ahmad Brooks are still out there...neither are dynamic pass rushers at this point, but both can set the edge against the run better than who we have. I say sign both and let Gilbert/Biegel develop.

The Tackles were brutal. Kizer had no time to do anything. Honestly I think Lane Taylor and Justin McCray (who was rock solid at RG IMO) are the next best options at Tackle currently on the roster. Murphy may be shaking of rust, but every other Tackle looked bad. The Titans have good pass rushers, but even the backups pushed around our guys. The biggest positive about Hundley, to me, was that he didn't panic while the pocket was collapsing. Kizer was forced out almost instantly.

The good:

The kids at WR impressed. Scantling Gun lived up to the chatter in camp that he looks like he’s shot out a cannon on every snap. He gets to top gear fast and doesn’t lose much in and out of breaks. Moore reminded me of a young Davante Adams. Easily creates separation. Smooth route runner. Overthinking the catch. I don’t think you can hide him on the PS though. For the same reasons everyone got way down on Adams early on. One of my favorite plays last night. Boyle standing in as the pocket is collapsing. Not getting skittish and delivering a tracer to EQ over the middle. EQ reverses field for YAC. Impressive play all around. Kumerow looks like a sure handed possession guy and assignment sure. You need a guy like that if someone gets dinged. I honestly don’t see how Trevor Davis makes this team.

Gilbert is clearly the 3rd best option at OLB. Adams looked good on the DL considering Daniels, Mo, Clay, and Perry didn’t play. Disruptive quick twitch big body. Josh Jackson looked good. Burks was impressive as well. Excited to see him and Martinez learning how to play together.

On Davante Adams long completion early. He thoroughly worked Malcom Butler like a child. It’s still stunning that Adams was viewed as a potential washout a few years back compared to what he is today. One of the best WRs in football.

The Bad:

House and Rollins cant do what they did on Titans 1st TD in the red zone. Not acceptable for veterans to hack coverage up like that. On the 38yd play on Titans opening drive there was another blown coverage. A WR ran a short drag route and was completely left uncovered. It seems like there is still some Dom habits lingering in the secondary that Pettine is going to have to address. Murphy struggled at LT. Need a better plan B there.

A little cold water on the Scantling Gun show. If he’s the long term solution as the kick returner he’s going to have to watch some tape. If you’re going to bring a kick off 3 yards deep out of the end zone you can’t look for the home run. You better get to the 25 and hope no one holds. If he puts the work in and happens to catch a crease though.... it’s ballgame. He’s Sam Shields fast.

The Ugly:

Rollins and Bell. Rollins is depth at safety or he’s not making the roster. Which kind of stinks because I think he could have been a decent option as the punt returner. But he was terrible last night. He is not a corner. Bell won’t make the team. There was a play early on where Hundley took a 3 step drop on a quick out to Adams. The ball was probably out in just over 2 seconds and Bell almost got Hundley killed when he didn’t lay a hand on the DE on an inside move.

I realize the coaches are way down on Spriggs because they asked him to put on 20lbs and he is really struggling playing with that weight. But if Spriggs can’t start ahead of what we saw from Bell then the depth on the OL is pretty terrifying.

Did Josh Jones even play last night? Totally invisible. We can't keep missing on Day 1/Day 2 picks, look at the group that are still on their rookie deals (sans 2018):

  • 2017 Round 2: Kevin King
  • 2017 Round 2: Josh Jones
  • 2017 Round 3: Montravious Adams
  • 2016 Round 1: Kenny Clark
  • 2016 Round 2: Jason Spriggs
  • 2016 Round 3: Kyler Fackrell
  • 2015 Round 1: Damarious Randall
  • 2015 Round 2: Quinten Rollins
  • 2015 Round 3: Ty Montgomery
  • 2014 Round 1: Haha Clinton-Dix
  • 2014 Round 2: Davante Adams
  • 2014 Round 3: Khyri Thornton
  • 2014 Round 3: Richard Rodgers

Don't want to prejudge 2017 right now, but out of 10 picks we are getting some kind of meaningful production out of 3 of them...that's a killer for depth.

Go back even further to guys who should be on their 2nd contract, meaning guys in the prime of their careers who should be the core of our team, and it looks even worse...

  • 2013 Round 1: Datone Jones
  • 2013 Round 2: Eddie Lacy
  • 2012 Round 1: Nick Perry
  • 2012 Round 2: Jerel Worthy
  • 2012 Round 2: Casey Hayward
  • 2011 Round 1: Derek Sherrod
  • 2011 Round 2: Randall Cobb
  • 2011 Round 3: Alex Green
  • 2010 Round 1: Bryan Bulaga
  • 2010 Round 2: Mike Neal
  • 2010 Round 3: Morgan Burnett

Only 3 from this group are still even with the team. This group should be our core right now. 6 players from the 2010 to 2017 are producing for us...

At least a small part of what you probably saw last night out of our OLBs vs. TEN's 1's is we had our 2's in at the DL.  Having Daniels, Clark and Wilkerson in there would make Gilbert, Fackrell and Biegel's jobs easier on at least some of the plays.  Cohen on his P60 podcast did not sound optimistic about Biegel's value to the team at any point.  Claims he's just too small for OLB.

Word is JJ suffered a concussion early last night. Walked to the locker room prior to the half.

Think your pulling the trigger early on King and Adams.

Spriggs, Randall, and Rollins. Nothing uplifting to add.

I don't see how better DL can mask OLB deficiencies, if anything teams will focus more heavily on pressing the edges with how stout our interior is (as you saw with TN). TN is a zone blocking team, those outside zones were killer because our OLBs either overran the play or got sucked inside...you need your whole defense to play disciplined and maintain gap integrity against those types of plays.

that's sure the way it appears to me, did last year too for the brief time we saw him.  I can't figure what Ted was thinking there...

Won't mask anything, just draws more attention especially if we use more 4 man fronts.  Tackles would shade to the inside to help on a penetrating DT.  Read "at least on some plays".

He's a future Tom Brady, only better.

There are two universal undeniable certainties about developing a QB.

You can’t teach arm strength and you can’t teach fearlessness.

You have those two set you can fill in the blank spaces.

A wise man mentioned to me - Re: Rollins..."He may still have lingering effects from the achilles injury. Some guys never get past it."

I forgot about how serious Rollins injury was. He may not ever regain what he once had

And that reminds me, Biegel....   he must be about 3rd or 4th string as it stands?  I didn't see anything to get excited about last night.

Stopped at training camp a week or so ago....it was one of the first days in pads.  Happened to be down in the corner where the OLB's were. Clay and Gilbert looked really good(Perry of course - out). Biegel ? Never saw him play in college, but I just dont see it with him. He was easily blocked by back-up tackles - who as we know are not looking very deep this year.  He doesn't look to have a stand-out attribute - size, speed, quickness, moves,  etc....meh. Hope I'm wrong.

Jones apparently doesn't have a concussion.

Bush and Janis held on to roster spots with a similar level of contribution.

What I saw Biegel doing last night on a number of plays was over-running them. He would penetrate into the Titans backfield just to see the RB or QB blowing right by him, and find himself 5 yards up field, totally out of the play.
I'm hoping it's mental errors that can be corrected, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting to see.

Are you certain you weren't watching old replays of AJ Hawk?

Let’s try to limit how many Notre Dame guys were keeping. We’ve blown enough big games the last few years, we don’t need these Irish bringing it up from the college ranks also. That’s 3 on the roster right now, let’s pick 1 of the 3 to keep.
