For those wondering, with this move:

quote:
The Packers carried over $7 million of salary cap space from 2012 to this year, putting them at almost exactly that amount under the cap for the 2013 season. They will gain $10 million from the Woodson move and if you add in the $3.75 million they got from Jeff Saturday's retirement their total under the cap is nearly $21 million.

Good, now I'm hoping they cut Hawk and Finley so they can get Rodgers, Raji and Matthews new long term contracts in one fell swoop. Maybe cut the salaries of Kuhn and Pickett (huge fan of both players, but they're both paid way too much) too while they're at it.
We did get younger, and we lost a lot in the locker room but I think MM and TT are forcing some of the young guys to step up. With Woodson, Saturday and Jennings, the kids had time to grow up and they let those guys lead. I think the staff now wants the young players to get ready and handle leadership duties. Perhaps now Clay, Burnett and even Cobb will feel they don't have to defer to the older guys and will grow into their new responsibilities.

All the better to extend AR12 and CMIII with...

Really good analysis from Silverstein.

While I like and mostly agree with the analysis there is a huge difference between DD and CW.

DD was home grown, CW was only here because nobody else wanted him. Only TT kept calling his agent.

DD was here for 15 seasons, CW for 7 seaons.

I hope both are elected into the Packer Hall of Fame at the same time.

From the Silverstein article that MichiganJoe posted the link for:

Unfortunately for Woodson, it's a young man's game with a salary cap that punishes teams who keep aging, high-priced players around a season or two too long.

Woodson was a great player and leader with the Packers, but he was slow when he came back. Maybe he just had not made it back into "football" shape after the injury, maybe the mileage is piling up. Either way, releasing him and freeing up the cap $$ is the right move. More than appreciate everything Woodson gave the Packers, but the time is right for both parties to go separate ways.

TT is rather effusive in his praise.
"We are grateful for all that Charles has given to the Green Bay Packers over the past seven years,” Thompson said. “He has been an integral part of the Packers’ success and our Super Bowl title in 2010 would not have been possible without his contributions. A once-in-a-generation talent as a player, he is also a great leader and ambassador for the organization off the field. Charles will always be a member of the Packers family and we look forward to his eventual induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We wish him and his family all the best."
Beyond last season you could also see some regression in 2011 as well. Granted it did him no favors that the Packers had almost no pash rush but Woody was gettin' behind WR's and "grabby" with ones he just couldn't keep up with like he could as recently as 2010. It was a pretty fast loss of step which I think was apparent to TT and MM before he went down with the latest collarbone fracture.
I hope he catches on with another team if that's what he wants to do. And, players don't enter the HOF as an ambassador of a specific team. Reggie White didn't get inducted as a Packer or an Eagle, for example.

I know, I just wanted to say it before someone else did!!
I've worn one Packer jersey in the last ten years. It was a 21 road jersey that my family gave to me as a b-day present as part of my 50th b-day. I was at SB 45 and I saw CW break his collarbone right in front of me. This was absolutely the right decision and I support the GB brain trust, but I don't like days like this. I also appreciated CW's commitment to the community.I'm looking forward to the day that he's placed in the ring of honor and the NFL HOF.
Thank you, C Wood, for several great years in the green and gold. Canton will be calling soon. Was great to have you in Green Bay, and see you get a ring as a Packer.

You have to respect Ted Thompson. It's hard to let go of players that have helped the team achieve greatness. While he acknowledges the past, he's always thinking about the future, and he doesn't allow sentiment to cloud his judgement. He does what is right for the team always.

Can't wait to see what Uncle Ted does now.
Can't believe a few people on JS Online have called him a borderline Hall of Famer. Really? He's a no brainer, imo.

NFL All Decade Team, the 2000's
AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, 2009
55 career interceptions, 11 returned for TDs (second all-time to Rod Woodson's 12)
Eight time Pro Bowler
Seven time All-Pro

Once Charles does retire, the clock to his Canton call will start ticking. He and Brett Favre will be the next Packer inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and there really shouldn't be any question about that.
Both parties in this marriage got what they wanted.

The Packers got a locker leader, a model professional off the field and terrific on-field player which helped them win a Super Bowl and most likely made many of the players around him better.

Woodson got the chance to first get back some relevancy, then the opportunity to turn a decent career into a stellar career (HOF-worthy) and also a boatload of cash on top of that.

Win-Win for both....the best possible outcome!!
Woodson has been a class act for GB.It has been a great 7 years for him and the Packers.

I dont think TT asked him to take a paycut , really how to you not insult a HOF player by asking about a pay cut unless Woodson brought it up.

Two broken collar bone injuries in a few years, well think about Leroy Butler,I dont think MM would want the 37 yr old who is breaking bones in his last few year to even suit up anymore...............and thats before you consider the lost step and younger guys ready to step in.

Donald Driver being a notable exception.

Bob McGinn pretty much says that Woody is washed-up in his most recent podcast.
