Who do you prefer to face in the final?

The Faeroe Islands.

Seriously I get terribly nervous in the lead-up to games like this, just like Packer playoff games.  Just get to Sunday afternoon already!

The Germans should probably have a better chance than the Dutch, although if Argentina were playing the Brazilians in the crowd would probably be rooting for Germany, which might help.

I just hope the Germans don't wind up wishing they'd saved some of those goals for the final.

Love the graphic, Chili!

Save some goals for the final? Are you kidding me? Germany didn't even have to work for their goals today as most were gift-wrapped when the defenders stood around and watched. After the first one, Brazil quit and their goalie couldn't bail them out by making a stop when one was really needed. Brazil's defense was exposed more than the butt of a baby with diarrhea. I think if other teams had attacked the way Germany did that Brazil would have been watching at home a couple games sooner. Most teams just tried to hold their forwards off the board; Germany attacked.

As opposed to Neuer, who made some great saves up 5-0 and was pissed when the rest of the team let him down after Özil's miss that led to Oscar's goal.  (Interesting that the Arsenal players Özil and Mertesacker were both lousy.  They only put Mertesacker in as a precaution for Hummels' tendinitis.)

But surely you know what it's like to be a fan and worry about even the littlest thing.
Poor Brazil have to see their archrival Argentina play in the final.

One way in which soccer is like the NFL:

Brazailian star Neymar's agent rips national team coach Scolari

quote:
Neymar's agent, Wagner Ribeiro, has launched a scathing attack on Luiz Felipe Scolari, branding the Brazil coach "repulsive and conceited."

[...]

And as the fallout from what the Brazilian media described as the most shameful result in the country’s football history, Riberio took to Twitter to launch a six-point personal attack on Felipao with an ironic list of requirements to be Brazil coach.

[...]

"Six – being an old jerk, arrogant, repulsive, conceited and ridiculous," he finished in brutal fashion.

Scolari has faced heavy criticism for Brazil's World Cup exit and is expected to leave his role at the end of tournament, though he refused to stand down on Wednesday.

I don't know if Neymar has a sister who tweets.  And I don't know if Scolari has received the dreaded "vote of confidence".

If Scolari coaches his defense to turn their backs to opponents, make lazy passes, and treat the opposition forwards as if they have an airborne communicable disease, then yes, it's his fault. On the other hand, Brazil has not been quite as good as advertised this tournament. The agent listed Scolari's resume, so why did Brazil hire him?

Football and futbol have one thing in common: Blame the coach for everything!

NFL meets the World Cup, in a way

quote:
When the World Cup final arrives this Sunday, one of the most beautiful trophies in sports will be accompanied by one of fashion's most gorgeous women.

Gisele Bundchen will escort the golden trophy in a Louis Vuitton case alongside retired Spanish player Carles Puyol, who helped his team become champions in 2010, FIFA announced Wednesday.

The trophy will be unveiled prior to kickoff, as Germany and Argentina prepare to battle for global soccer supremacy.

Handing it out should provide some consolation for Bundchen, who was disappointed when her home country of Brazil was knocked out of the tournament on Tuesday.

Wow. On tv at home I don't think they showed this replay, only him making the save. But, if the refs were paying attention, they should have seen it hit Vlaar's shoulder and the result would have been no goal anyway. You can tell by how Vlaar turns away after bumping the ball that he touched it; he doesn't even finish watching where the ball ends up until he kind of turns pitifully to the ref and points at the ball. You have to wonder: if he hadn't touched it, would it have had enough momentum and spin to curl back in? Hmmm...

I don't think he touched it at all; he recoiled and ducked his shoulder under to avoid touching it and the ball didn't deflect after it passed him by.

Additionally, had he touched it, its unlikely that it would still have the spin needed to keep rolling toward the goal. The ball then settles in the small indent of the goalline, a few inches from being a goal

That would have been an amazing twist to the PK shootout; Romero would have been rocked mentally
