Howard played lights out, but I can't help but think how much better Bradley played as the tournament moved forward.  I thought his play was exceptional against the Belgians.

Continue to develop Green, and Yeldin, and a healthy Altidore, and the quality is there.

How great will it be to win the WC in Russia!

Your TV ratings update.  None of these numbers include the public viewings at big screens set up in parks and public squares (I don't think they include online viewing either):

16.5 million on ESPN, 5.1 million on Univision

quote:
ESPN had 16.49 million viewers watching the game and a 9.8 rating. That is not a record for ESPN, but it is the second-most watched men’s soccer game in U.S. TV history. Yesterday’s game falls behind the 18.22 million who watched the American team’s heartbreaking last-minute tie with Portugal on June 22, which got a 9.6 rating. However, the latter game was on a Sunday unlike yesterday’s weekday match.
[...]
Over on Univision, 5.1 million viewers watched the game, which went into extra time. While not the record-breaking 10.4 million who tuned in for Mexico’s loss on June 29 to the Netherlands

Apparently all those immigrants landscaping Blair Kiel's lawn were rooting for Mexico.

Red Devils break viewership record

quote:
Over four million people watched the game: 1.7 million on French-language RTBF, and 2.4 million watched on Dutch-langauge VRT

That's 4.1 million in a country of just over 11 million.

I watched a fair amount of the second 45 minutes and a bit of the extra time, was rooting for the US, thought there were some mildly exciting parts.....and still find soccer extremely boring.  Too each his own though as I can watch golf all weekend depending on the tournament.

So, our first semifinal is set:

Neymar should have been suspended for the game for yellow card accumulation anyhow.  Trying to screw with the Colombian free kick deserved a yellow card and he was already on one.  They're also missing Thiago Alves, who did get his second yellow card of the tournament.

It's also karma for 2010 when Thomas Müller picked up a thoroughly bogus yellow card in the quartrefinal against Argentina and had to miss the semi against Spain.  Germany didn't have any of the inventiveness they had in earlier rounds.

The World Cup is now history for the NEXT 4 years for America.

Today the NEXT big International event started and it is ANNUAL.

The TOUR DE FRANCE kicked off it's 101st edition in Leeds England this AM.

Some kind of amalgamation of Thiago Silva and Daniel Alves? Pretty good, considering the fact they will both miss the game, Alves because he has been benched.

Hey, maybe American kids will finally smarten up. Want to make twice the money annually, in a career twice as long, with 5 times the opportunities, play futbol, not football. If someone dares to hit you you can lay of the ground writing for 15 minutes and get nothing but sympathy. Do that in football and they call you a pussy.

They need to go by a single name, like the rest of the Brazilian team.
And in the other semifinal, we have:

The Julie Gonzalos

vs.

The Famke Janssens

Takes guts and a special mentality in a goalkeeper to come in cold for just the penalty shots and turn back two. After having been a goalie (hockey) for many years, I cannot imagine coming in cold to stop penalties. Costa Rica looked a little shell-shocked to be on that big a stage in that situation; the last guy hit that ball like he was just hoping it would go in.

You're right, Fed, Neymar should have been out on yellows, but they aren't going to suspend Brazil's biggest star for a WC semi in Brazil. Neymar could have slugged the guy and they still wouldn't have suspended him. My reacation when I saw the hit on him was, "Quit rolling around and get up and play!" It just didn't look like that bad of a hit. There were a lot of hard fouls on both sides in that game -- it looked like a football game broke out!

If Dom Capers coached the Brazilian defense, his Brazilian name would be Capardo.

Seemed relevant. Although what's happening in Brazil today is pretty crazy.

There's losing at home. Then there's losing at home in the playoffs. Then there's getting blown out at home in the playoffs. Then there's Brazil - 2014.

That gal has a hairy arm.

I played 1000 outdoor games over 25 years.

Never allowed 5 in a half.....even to The Bavarians.

Amazing by Germany.
