Nielsen ratings down for USA-Germany game, but WatchESPN viewing up

quote:
As would be expected, Thursday’s early start time cut into viewership of ESPN’s coverage of Team USA’s match against Germany in the World Cup, but it helped draw more viewers to the net’s online streaming of the game.

According to Nielsen estimates, Germany’s 1-0 victory averaged a 6.3 overnight household rating from roughly noon to 2 p.m. ET — down from the 9.1 for USA-Portugal on Sunday and the 7.0 for USA-Ghana on Monday, June 16. Still, this makes it the third-highest rating ever for a men’s World Cup match on ESPN.

The rating peaked at a 9.5 from 1:45-2 p.m. ET.

WatchESPN set a platform record with 1.7 million peak concurrent viewers, as the match was likely a big draw at offices across the country, including the West Coast where the contest began at the start of the workday. This more than doubled the previous high for WatchESPN of 750,000 concurrent streams for last week’s Brazil-Mexico tussle.

Meanwhile, in Germany:

27.2 million viewers: USA-Germany scores top rating

quote:
Although Jogi's boys aren't in top form, the TV viewership was at a record high!  With an average of 27.25 million, this is the current leader for the 2014 World Cup.

[...]

At its peak, the game reached a total of 30.3 million people watching, which doesn't include the people at public viewings and in bars

There's a chart of the top-rated World Cup games at that link; the percentages in parentheses are I believe roughly equivalent to a Nielsen share, so 84% of all TVs on in Germany during the game were showing the game.    (27 million is, I believe, a few percentage points below the percentage of the population watching in Belgium.)
Vincent Kompany has bad taste in movies:

So it's Carmen Miranda against Juan Valdez.

Robben admits to diving

quote:
After the game Robben admitted diving on one of the first two occasions, when fouls were not given, but claimed the third time was a legitimate foul and said it is a tendency he must curb.

"I must apologise," Robben told Nederlandse Omroep Stichting. "The one [at the end] was a penalty, but the other one was a dive in the first half. I shouldn't be doing that."

I presume they cut off the "**** you Mexico" bit at the end.

Yellow-card the bastard.

Bit of a dive? That was a diva dive! I hope Netherlands doesn't revert back to its style from last year's final -- that was brutal play and set soccer back almost a decade. On the other hand, great save by the CR goalie to survive Greece. Still a great tournament...

Why a team with that much offensive talent felt the need to play that **** blows my mind. Glad I missed that game to attend my son's soccer tournament. The soccer was much better at the high school game.

Ya gotta wonder about their coach, if he encourages it or just doesn't ask his team to stop diving. It makes Netherlands look like jackarses out there and leaves a poor impression on those who only tune in once every four years. And you're right, Goal, they certainly don't have to do that crap to gain an edge -- they're good in their own right and deserve to be there.

Team Belgium injury update

Fellaini had to cut his practice short with calf soreness, but it shouldn't stop him from playing on Tuesday.
Ciman and Dembélé practiced with the team as a whole; presumably that means they'll be ready to go.
Vermaelen practiced alone with the kinesthesiologist.
Kompany didn't practice at all, and his status remains uncertain.

One of the readers commented on the article, "Yet another injury.  Unbelievable."  Sounds like a Packer fan.

Monday's practice at the stadium in Salvador was called off for both teams due to torrential rain.

On the bright side, Nigel de Jong, who karate-kicked Xabi Alonso in the 2010 final, left today's game with a groin injury.

The coaches telling their players to play like gentlemen and give up something that's working for them?

Mexico's coach Herrera ripped the referees a new one, and said that the one that refereed the Mexico-Netherlands game ought to be going home just like the Mexican team.

As far as I know, Lance Easley has not been seen at the World Cup.

Fedya, that was an interesting click about the Belgian injuries:

"Ciman had been there a few days infiltration because he suffers from some time a groin pain. For its part, Dembele had not led Saturday due to muscle stiffness while Vermaelen is still recovering from a pulled hamstring contracted against Russia.

Furthermore Anthony Vanden Borre - hors de combat due to a crack in the left fibula - Vincent Kompany already plan Thursday in South Korea (1-0) is the only Red Devil to not be mounted on the ground drive Sunday. "

Nothing yet about de Jong's "some time a groin pain"!
