ILB Sam Barrington vs Brad Jones

 

Barrington made some noise last season and was really coming along when he got dinged and missed some time

 

I think he presents the biggest challenge to the veteran Jones keeping his starting spot.

I've got injuries and "scheming" beating out optimism.  

 

As far as Hyde and Hayward, if Hayward is back to form I don't think it's a question that Hayward gets on the field more.  I thought Hayward would make the jump to the outside but if he is highly effective in the slot he's going to stay.  I don't think a guy like Hyde could play outside.  Goodson may be able to push Tramon, he's a cover corner.

I don't see a Hyde/Hayward/Williams bill.  With MM wanting to get Hyde on the field more and also wanting the D to be more "multiple", Hyde may start to play the joker roll Woodson used to play.  Not as well but maybe better than anyone else has since CW departed.  No one has really taken that roll over since then.

I take some hints about his future... from the fact that the Packers didn't draft an OT

We'll see what happens in TC, but a Flanagan-like resurgence would be fantastic

Here's McGinn's year end report card on Barrington:

 

Sam Barrington: Rookie seventh-round draft choice beat out Terrell Manning, a fifth-round pick in '12, for the No. 5 berth inside. Suffered a hamstring injury in Game 8, ending what had been his physical start on special teams. Although Barrington didn't play a snap from scrimmage, he played extensively in exhibition games. He demonstrated a fiery tempo, considerable snap on his tackles and solid rush ability. He isn't particularly big or fast, but his instincts, toughness and smarts (Wonderlic of 23) warrant him a long, long look in 2014. He'll press for major playing time if he continues to develop. Grade: Incomplete.

 

Perhaps the Packers like Barrington/Lattimore more than the rest of the ILBs in the draft outside of Shazier and Mosley. Let the competition begin...

 

 

Great topic to revisit in 3 years. Bradford or Shazier. Better carreer start.

 

Purely speculation on my part... After Shazier and Mosley maybe Thompson had guys like Bullough, Skov, and Borland rated much lower than where they were taken? Add in that Thompson is always scouting, maybe he sees that the 2015 draft for ILB's appears to be deeper in the 2-4 round range so why use a pick now when he could get better value in a year?

 

 

 

Considering that Bullough and Skov weren't even drafted, he must have had them rated just below the long snapper from Northwest Montana State University College of Western Literature.

That guy has a Ph.D in Louis L'amour.

My point Rusty is we know so little about the scouting / grading process. Based on what I read/saw I was sure those three were all going to get drafted.

 

Nice to have Thompson at the helm.
