@FootballExpert: When Mike Pettine is fired, the last five coaches fired in the AFC North would have been the coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Why would anyone want the Cleveland job.  You won't win there, don't get much support in personnel and will be fired within a couple of years of signing.  I guess the pay is okay, not great, and it gets you some experience.  Wonder if they wish they still had Belicheat?

Well well well

@AdamSchefter: Chiefs OC Doug Pederson expected to be a leading candidate for Philadelphia HC job, per sources. Pederson coached in Philly from 2009-12.

Is Pederson part of the Holmgren coaching tree or the Sherman tree?

I know some people are speculating that Eliot Wolf should be the heir apparent to TT, but why would TT retire? He has no family or kids. It's not like he'd be retiring to spend time with them. What would he do?

I don't know about DC, but he would definitely be a good position coach. I'd love to see him in GB coaching the LBs. His team sucked overall, but his defense always played really hard and aggressive.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Wolf. I'd almost rather he get some GM experience if the plan is for him to succeed Thompson.

I could see Chip ending up in SF.

I don't think Chip Kelly is wired for the NFL.  Especially after reading this piece this morning, he's just too controlling, and frankly weird.

I think he's a star in college where that is probably a benefit vs the NFL.  I say Univ of Texas is a perfect fit for him.  Hell after last night's implosion, maybe he ends up back at Oregon...

The Browns are doing some very outside-the-box front office hirings focused on analytics.  I give them credit for trying something new, but I don't see how analytics, which may work well in MLB, translates well to the NFL.  Maybe it's based more on workout numbers?  In-game statistics are very sketchy to rely on over a 16-game schedule.

Greg Gabriel (writer for NFPost and a 30 year NFL scout) had this to say last year about analytics in football.

In recent years, it (analytics) has also become an important part of football evaluation, but it will never replace good old fashioned scouting. Part of the reason is the difference in the two games. Baseball is a much more individual game. Batter vs. pitcher. Statistical numbers can be very important. Football, on the other hand, is the ultimate team game, and while numbers are useful as a part of the evaluation process, tape study will always be much more important.

I like the idea of Wolf because he's young and his last name, but I don't know anything about the guy beyond that. There has been scuttlebutt that lifelong Wisconsinian John Schneider would one day come home, and I'd be all over that.

Even if Elliot is the guy, no job in CLE lasts longer than 3-4 years any way.

I wonder if RG III is worth anything in a trade because I don't see him as a Foreskin next season. Kaepernick and Johnny Rehab likely both will be on the open market too.

During the last off-season Washington signed Griffin to his CBA-structured rookie fifth year contract option, which would apply to next season, to the tune of a cool $16 million for next year. Did that when he had been declared as the starter and it was viewed as a way to buck up his confidence going into 2015.

After his terrible pre-season (I've never seen an NFL starter look so hopeless in the pocket), he was benched for Cousins and can only collect on that contract if he is on the WASH roster at the beginning of the 2016 league year (April, IIRC). WASH could try to trade him before then but the receiving team would be on the hook for that money. More likely Washington just straight cuts him. Then any team that picks up him up can negotiate a new contract from scratch.

I suppose Griffin and his entourage could try to broker a trade to the team of his choice coupled with a contract renegotiation, and WASH might oblige to get something in return,  but why would any team trade anything for him when he'll be on the street?

Johnny Costume in Dallas backing up a broken down Romo while going on double dates with Greg Hardy. Oh please make it happen Jerry.

I actually think RGIII could be better than decent in the right city with the right coach. I kind of admire the guy for staying way under the radar and off social media after being asked to wear street clothes all year. Humbling stuff but he never made a wave.

He was available and Thompson/McCarthy didn't think they could use him?
