Defenses today (to me) look so specialized. The Packers, for instance, play a 25 formation regularly, and utilize their "psycho" package frequently.
The point is, I don't think players have to be 'limited' to playing only one kind of scheme or another. Of course, a player would have to have the necessary skills or athleticism, but freakish players like Williams (or Peppers) shouldn't have a problem playing a "hybrid" role.

So sign MW at MW money so he can have the occasional DE stint in an occasional 4-3 concept Capers D? Yeah that sounds like a cost/benefit ratio TT would be all over.

It only makes sense if he can actually play OLB in a 3-4, gravy if he is versatile enough to go either way.  I haven't watched MW much if at all so I don't know if he can.  Many thought Peppers was better suited as a 43 DE, which is clearly wrong.

Jordy is dying to play. Ty is back. Eddie is eating kale and hummus and looking for a chef.

Ted, find a real inside linebacker. A real inside linebacker. Move Clay outside permanently and he's capable of 20 sacks on his own. He's played the good soldier inside. Let him go black ops assassin again.

This team is so effing close its damn near impossible to wait for week 1.

In terms of impact plays, the stat sheet shows Matthews has been just as effective inside as outside.  Last 24 regular season games he has primarily played ILB and the impact stats in those 24 games are 15 sacks, 12 stuffs, 1 interception, 8 pass breakups.  In the last 24 games played at OLB, the impact stats are 14 sacks, 12 stuffs, 1 interception, 6 pass breakups.  There was the hand injury that limited him in 2013, but even if fully healthy it's not likely he would have posted big enough numbers to tilt the outside/inside numbers heavily in favor of outside.  2014 was an even split between inside linebacker and outside linebacker, 8 games each.  In the 8 games that Matthews played outside he totaled 2.5 sacks.  In the 8 games he played inside he totaled 8.5 sacks.

The Packers might be saying that Matthews is definitely moving back outside next year, but McCarthy was saying he wanted Matthews playing outside linebacker at this same time last year.  He'll play where he fits best based on the rest of the personnel.  I don't think Ted will approach this draft with the intention of Matthews playing any one particular position.  If Ragland falls to #27 then Ted probably picks him and combined with Barrington/Ryan...then the Packers move Matthews back outside.  But if Ted's guy at #27 happens to be an OLB that can play right away, then that guy + Peppers are the outside linebackers and Matthews stays inside.

Just read that Mario Williams is looking for $10m per year.  Not sure if that happens anywhere, but definitely not happening here.  Forte at a reasonable deal averaging $3m would be a great signing though.  Provides veteran leadership in the backfield, gives Lacy a very needed push, and can be a damn good receiving threat on 3rd downs.  All depends on price and how much TT thinks he has left.

Looks like Brandon Marshall, ILB with the Broncos, was only tendered at a 2nd round pick.  Is our 58th pick worth it?  Very doubtful TT gives up a 2nd rounder but interesting the Broncos didn't put a 1st round tender on him, as they most likely lost Trevathan.

@AlbertBreer: Dolphins announce they've released veteran WR Greg Jennings.

Gerg got 18 million guaranteed from the Vikings for what turned out to be two years and another 4 million from the Dolphins. He ended up with a 3 year, 22 million dollar haul. That's not chump change, but if reports were correct that the Packers offered him something like 10 million a year for 4 years at one point (essentially the same offers that Jordy and Cobb took), Gerg and sister cost themselves a lot of money.

Could the Green Bay Packers find their long-sought answer at inside linebacker through free agency? Perhaps, at least according to ESPN's Ed Werder, who tweeted that the team, as well as the division-rival Chicago Bears, may have interest in Denver Broncos free-agent linebacker Brandon Marshall.

Because Marshall has only accrued three season in the NFL, he doesn't qualify for full free agency. Instead, the Broncos have tendered him a the second-round level, meaning Green Bay or anyone else interested in the linebacker would have to part with a second-round pick to acquire him. General manager Ted Thompson is loath to relinquish draft picks of any kind, let alone a Day 2 selection. However, perhaps he feels Marshall can outperform any of the off-ball linebackers the team could find at that point in the draft.

Though not officially a report, Werder has as many connections as just about anyone covering the NFL. If he thinks the Packers have interest in Marshall, it stands to reason that he may have heard something over the last few weeks. Accordingly, keep and eye on the linebacker during the upcoming free-agency period.

Seriously? Why Titans?...

Titans trading for DeMarco Murray

DeMarco Murray AP

The Titans are finalizing a trade for Eagles running back DeMarco Murray, ESPNโ€™s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

Murrayโ€™s representation at Sports Trust Advisors confirmed the trade via Twitter, saying Murray will get a new contract from the Titans.

The Eagles spent Monday paving the way for the organization to rid itself of ex-coach Chip Kellyโ€™s players. A deal was also set up that will send linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell to the Dolphins.
