Sounds great on paper.
It'd be great to get deep into January without major injuries.

Defenses today (to me) look so specialized. The Packers, for instance, play a 25 formation regularly, and utilize their "psycho" package frequently.
The point is, I don't think players have to be 'limited' to playing only one kind of scheme or another. Of course, a player would have to have the necessary skills or athleticism, but freakish players like Williams (or Peppers) shouldn't have a problem playing a "hybrid" role.
So sign MW at MW money so he can have the occasional DE stint in an occasional 4-3 concept Capers D? Yeah that sounds like a cost/benefit ratio TT would be all over.
It only makes sense if he can actually play OLB in a 3-4, gravy if he is versatile enough to go either way. I haven't watched MW much if at all so I don't know if he can. Many thought Peppers was better suited as a 43 DE, which is clearly wrong.
We'll always have 6 quarters of "The Quad" from 2014...
Pretty certain peppers would have to go if Williams was a possibility.
Why would Peppers have to go?
Mario played OLB in Houston's 3-4 and did very well there. TT should have a lot of interest as he's a street free agent and wouldn't count against compensatory picks. He and Peppers aren't long-term guys, and Peppers' snaps are reportedly going to be even more limited next season.

Ted, find a real inside linebacker. A real inside linebacker. Move Clay outside permanently and he's capable of 20 sacks on his own. He's played the good soldier inside. Let him go black ops assassin again.
This team is so effing close its damn near impossible to wait for week 1.
In terms of impact plays, the stat sheet shows Matthews has been just as effective inside as outside. Last 24 regular season games he has primarily played ILB and the impact stats in those 24 games are 15 sacks, 12 stuffs, 1 interception, 8 pass breakups. In the last 24 games played at OLB, the impact stats are 14 sacks, 12 stuffs, 1 interception, 6 pass breakups. There was the hand injury that limited him in 2013, but even if fully healthy it's not likely he would have posted big enough numbers to tilt the outside/inside numbers heavily in favor of outside. 2014 was an even split between inside linebacker and outside linebacker, 8 games each. In the 8 games that Matthews played outside he totaled 2.5 sacks. In the 8 games he played inside he totaled 8.5 sacks.
The Packers might be saying that Matthews is definitely moving back outside next year, but McCarthy was saying he wanted Matthews playing outside linebacker at this same time last year. He'll play where he fits best based on the rest of the personnel. I don't think Ted will approach this draft with the intention of Matthews playing any one particular position. If Ragland falls to #27 then Ted probably picks him and combined with Barrington/Ryan...then the Packers move Matthews back outside. But if Ted's guy at #27 happens to be an OLB that can play right away, then that guy + Peppers are the outside linebackers and Matthews stays inside.
Matthews is insanely effective rushing inside as the guards don't have the speed to handle him and his ability to shoot the gap is stunning. Didn't he have a sack last season in 2 seconds? Rams game maybe?
Not teds mo to have two 30+ players at same position.

Highly doubtful we will ever see a steady 4-3 variation from Dom Capers again after that debacle. At least the staff immediately acknowledged that it was a bad idea and moved away from it relatively quickly. Wish last year's coaching staff on offense would have been as quick to respond.

PackerRuss is right though, we see it every year with "Packers interest in player _________."
If teams want to believe that crap, I'm all for it. Let them screw up their caps.
Who was the source on the tweet anyway?
A bird?
Guy's medical history scares the crap out of me, but could mean he has to take a short, incentive-laden deal. If anything, should help keep Forte's price down and remove one suitor.
A pretty good break down (with scouts opinions) on each UFA TE coming open. Green still appears to be the cream of the crop. I had forgotten about Bennett from Da Bears. But I was also reminded of what a whiney douche bag he can be.
Fleener is an All-Pro with AR throwing to him all year
Us? Need a TE?!??!! NAWWwwwww.....
This forum has many TE's. The Packers could use a little extra help.
Heard the Oscars are looking for a new host.
@AlbertBreer: Dolphins announce they've released veteran WR Greg Jennings.
I'll be the 1st. Bring him back, bring him back.
gotta wonder what he has left in the tank.
Gerg, much like James Jones, is what I call an "ICE" WR.
In Case of Emergency.
No reporter is closer to the Mannings than Chris Mortensen.
@mortreport: Filed to ESPN: Five-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning will announce his retirement Monday in Denver per source familiar with the QB's decision
How can he not retire, he clearly cannot play QB anymore.
I don't think it's Peyton wanting to retire as much as it is Peyton realizing no team would pay noodle arm as a starting QB. Reality check.
One of the latest rumors connecting Forte to Green Bay is his former teammate and current Packer, Julius Peppers. Here is a comment from ESPN's Rob Demovsky in an article posted Sunday night:
Word is that another ex-Bear-turned-Packer Julius Peppers has been trying to recruit Forte to Green Bay. It sounds like Forte wants to go to a contender, so perhaps the Packers could get him at an affordable price.
Maybe Julius can give him some of his cash.
Just read that Mario Williams is looking for $10m per year. Not sure if that happens anywhere, but definitely not happening here. Forte at a reasonable deal averaging $3m would be a great signing though. Provides veteran leadership in the backfield, gives Lacy a very needed push, and can be a damn good receiving threat on 3rd downs. All depends on price and how much TT thinks he has left.
Looks like Brandon Marshall, ILB with the Broncos, was only tendered at a 2nd round pick. Is our 58th pick worth it? Very doubtful TT gives up a 2nd rounder but interesting the Broncos didn't put a 1st round tender on him, as they most likely lost Trevathan.
cuqui posted:@AlbertBreer: Dolphins announce they've released veteran WR Greg Jennings.
Gerg got 18 million guaranteed from the Vikings for what turned out to be two years and another 4 million from the Dolphins. He ended up with a 3 year, 22 million dollar haul. That's not chump change, but if reports were correct that the Packers offered him something like 10 million a year for 4 years at one point (essentially the same offers that Jordy and Cobb took), Gerg and sister cost themselves a lot of money.
It also seems the market for Trevathan will be high. Teams with a lot of cap space like Jax or Atl will overpay to get him. I thought it was a long shot TT pursued either, but as always he won't get in to a bidding war for a FA.
Agree on Trevathan. Would love to see him in green and gold but he's easily the best non-pass rushing linebacker on the market meaning he'll be in that group that gets overpaid on day 1. Not TT's style and I agree with it.

Id take GJ back. I doubt theres much competition and hed be cheap
He's the Packers' version of Deion Branch...
Could the Green Bay Packers find their long-sought answer at inside linebacker through free agency? Perhaps, at least according to ESPN's Ed Werder, who tweeted that the team, as well as the division-rival Chicago Bears, may have interest in Denver Broncos free-agent linebacker Brandon Marshall.
Because Marshall has only accrued three season in the NFL, he doesn't qualify for full free agency. Instead, the Broncos have tendered him a the second-round level, meaning Green Bay or anyone else interested in the linebacker would have to part with a second-round pick to acquire him. General manager Ted Thompson is loath to relinquish draft picks of any kind, let alone a Day 2 selection. However, perhaps he feels Marshall can outperform any of the off-ball linebackers the team could find at that point in the draft.
Though not officially a report, Werder has as many connections as just about anyone covering the NFL. If he thinks the Packers have interest in Marshall, it stands to reason that he may have heard something over the last few weeks. Accordingly, keep and eye on the linebacker during the upcoming free-agency period.
A fat contract for Marshall AND a 2nd round pick? If that happens, Hell will have officially frozen over at 1265.
Agree. Makes a lot more sense to just sign Trevathan, who's a better player and would only cost money.
Seriously? Why Titans?...
The Titans are finalizing a trade for Eagles running back DeMarco Murray, ESPNโs Adam Schefter reported Monday.
Murrayโs representation at Sports Trust Advisors confirmed the trade via Twitter, saying Murray will get a new contract from the Titans.
The Eagles spent Monday paving the way for the organization to rid itself of ex-coach Chip Kellyโs players. A deal was also set up that will send linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell to the Dolphins.
Colts have re-signed Dwayne Allen. That means Coby Fleener will hit the open market.
