It doesn't sound good to me. My guess? They will try him out watch the experiment fail and then let him go.

No rush on letting him go either, they can PUP/ IR him all of 2017 if they want

Jamaal Charles and Adrian Peterson on the market. Even with injuries I'd rather have Charles, he can at least catch a cold and block a little.

Agreed, but the most likely scenario for Charles is that he will sign with someone for good money, play well for about 5-6 games, and then get  hurt. For the right money, maybe it's worth it for a team like the Packers to sign him and maybe win an extra game or two because of him.

Peterson needs to go play for a team that has a crappy or young QB that just wants to run the ball 25-30 times a game. Texans, Bills, Broncos, 49ers. The Texans probably make the most sense.

I wouldn't bring him as your only guy, I'd bring him and Lacy in, again depending on the cost. Charles isn't a guy I would sink a lot of dollars in, but he's a really good fit for this offense (truly he's a fit for any offense). He's athletic enough to split out, he catches the ball well, he blocks, he performs equally well in Zone and Power running schemes...and he's spent a good chunk of his career in a vertical WCO scheme similar to McCarthy's. Matt Forte got 3 years/12 mil from NYJ last year, I'd pay that much to have Jamaal Charles, maybe even 3 years/15 mil. When he's healthy he's a top 5 RB, same with Lacy and his health/weight. If both guys are health/in-shape, they would easily be a top 5 RB tandem in the NFL. Worth the gamble IMO, but it's unlikely they bring in Charles. More than likely they are going to stick with Lacy/Monty/Rookie in 2017.

But, if Charles is clearly better than what you list, why wouldn't they bring him in? At this stage in his career he isn't going to get a big deal from anyone, so likely he'd fit Thompson's MO for vets and value.

Packers have more than ample cap space but throwing 7 million dollars of cap space to a combination of Charles and Lacy is not a good use of resources.  Would definitely rather overpay someone like T.J. Lang than use a strategy like this.

Agree that the RBs in 2017 will be Lacy, Montgomery and a rookie.  Too bad.  I would rather see Lacy playing for somebody else.  Too many other decent running backs on the market that aren't 25 pounds overweight.

Why didn't they bring in Matt Forte at that number, surely they could have topped 4 mil/year and convinced him to move north? Given the option I think they prefer to go with cheaper youth over high priced vets unless it's someone they really like (like Peppers/Woodson/Pickett/etc.). That may be the case with Charles, but I don't think they value RB enough to make that kind of move. It wouldn't be a bad use of resources, Atlanta showed how much pressure a good RB tandem can take off the QB. At Rodgers' age the teams need to reduce as much pressure as possible from him. Again, with Charles and Lacy you're looking at 2 of the best RBs in the league when healthy/in-shape. Even at 260 lbs. Lacy was still getting the job done.

Could be, but players don't often take less money out of pure loyalty. NFL players, especially RBs, have such a short shelf life that they need to get the money while they can. I'm guessing Forte followed the money (why else would you go to the Jets), if GB had offered more guaranteed dollars then he would have followed the money to GB.

I kind of like the idea of Lacy and Monty, with a 4th or 5th round rookie as the third guy.  With an offseason of learning the position, we're going to see some significant improvement from Monty.  And even if Lacy is in the shape he was last year, he can still get 5.0 ypc.  I've read that RB is very deep this year so a 4th-5th rounder could prove to be a solid guy.  Throw in Ripkowski and we're looking pretty good at RB.

Brandon put up 1,500 yards per season twice with Cutler and Fitzpatrick tossing up Cutler and Fitzpatrick like passes in the last 5 years. 48 TDs the last 5 years playing with pure ****.

Thats a Woodson on offense like signing if all agree on the contract. Brandon is one crazy **** but he will go all out he certainly wants a ring.

I thought Danny boy was getting a little smarter and allowing the GM to run the show. Trading Cousins for an aging, broken down Romo? Really?

Report: Possibility of a three-way trade involving Kirk Cousins, Tony Romo

Well, this would shake things up.

In the wildest permutation of the quarterback dominoes falling we’ve heard to date, we have a report that a three-way trade could be discussed which would include Washington, San Francisco and Dallas and presumably keep Tony Romo in the NFC East.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, as a potential Kirk Cousins deal to the 49ers is discussed, the two teams may involve the Cowboys.

That’s a lot of conditions jammed into one tweet.

That would mean Cousins could join Kyle Shanahan with the 49ers, Washington would end up with a longtime rival and the Cowboys would end up with picks.

This is, frankly, so far out there it’s hard to believe, as the idea of the Cowboys trading Romo to a team they play twice a year seems farfetched. And since Romo has some degree of control over this process, it would be a bit of a surprise if Washington would be the place he’d choose to be.

I'm probably in the minority but I'd bring him back.  Jags cut him b/c he wasn't worth his $6m salary coupled with the fact the Jags are in full rebuild.  No reason to pay a veteran CB $6m when you won't compete for the playoffs for at least 2 more years.  But at $2-3m?  I'd take him back.  This team needs a veteran presence and I'm not sure TT will spring for any of the top 5 CBs on the market.  House seems like the type of player TT would bring back (at the right price, of course).

The Jags also cut him b/c they're front office is bottom 3 in the NFL.  They have no clue what they're doing and hiring Tom Coughlin to work above their GM isn't going to help things.

What Randall and Rollins need most are coaching, encouragement, and someone that can take away their playing time.

As of today R and R see Gunter, Hawkins, Goodson, Whitehead and Dorleant in the rear view mirror. That's not a imposing list. If nothing else House jumps to the front of the line of guys that will take their job if given a chance. Draft should add another real threat.

Possibility of losing your job in year three of your rookie deal can be a very motivating force.

No on House.  The Packers need corners that can start, not #4 and #5 corner types.

2011 - 2 games, 0 starts

2012 - 9 games, 5 starts

2013 - 16 games, 5 starts

2014 - 13 games, 4 starts

2015 - 16 games, 15 starts (starts "earned?" after a foolish GM gave him a ridiculous contract)

2016 - 16 games, 4 starts

The guy is not a starting cornerback.

And if you put any stock in Pro Football Focus, House was worse than Gunther was last season.

QB rating when throwing against House last year was 153.3.

The Jaguars had nearly 70 millon dollars in cap space, probably will lose Prince Amukamara and still decided House wasn't worth 6 million dollars in cap space.

Sad part is that House was better than Damarious Randall.

Would be disappointed if this is the best that Thompson can do with free agent corners.  I'm all for adding veteran depth but in this case I'd rather go with the undrafted rookie size/speed prospect.  If Dorleant hadn't blown out his knee I'd take him over House.

But if the decision came down to House versus Demetri Goodson, then I'd take House.
