You don't think having crappy DBs limits what you can do schematically?

Fair point. But then you design a defense to try to hide them as much as possible. You don't put them on an island. I know it seems like I'm bashing Gunther- I'm not as I think he has some value as a guy that can match up against the big, strong possession receiver types (think A. Boldin). But to design a defense that assumes that Gunther can play like Sam Shields and cover Julio Jones is just seems stupid. I think the mark of a good coach in games that they lose is that they make sure they best guys on the other team don't beat them.

If you are playing the Falcons, it means don't let Julio Jones beat you. If you have to triple cover him, make someone else beat you. Maybe they did that and just executed so poorly he was still able to go for 9 catches for 180 yards. If the 3rd WR beats your 3rd CB, so be it.

If you playing the 49ers in the playoffs and Kaepernik has already run for over 100 yards in the middle of the 3rd quarter, make sure you don't get beat AGAIN on a QB draw. You had halftime to change something, but you get beat by the same play?

I agree with your post and not to be too forgiving of Dom (I know people hate that), but how do you cover up your top 3 CBs being mediocre? We had 2 Safeties (Hyde, Burnett) playing CB against one of the top passing offenses in the league, a mediocre CB matched up against Julio, and injured CBs trying to play against the other good WRs they have. Covering up weaknesses definitely is how you handle injuries, its what they did in 2010 with Hawk and Charlie Peprah starting, but that team was able to cover up weaknesses with Bishop and Nick Collins. We had to use Safeties to cover up for CBs, that limits you schematically. No one should have been shocked that a defense with mediocre or injured talent at CB got carved up by an elite passing offense. Was anyone surprised the Packers offense sucked in 2013 with their best player injured?

I guess that is why you hire a defensive coordinator.  Like they matter in the equation somehow.

You're so smert...

All DC's except Dom can make a defense work without any CBs. It's all about motivating and getting players to play better than their skills right? Easy as that.

The real reason you need a coordinator is so that the HC doesn't have to talk to the media when the defense snatched defeat from the jaws of victory one more time, to yell "what in the hell is going on out there!" once and a while (which would be the truth - for a change), and to set an example for the players by eating donuts and staying in shape.

Spam rules.....in Hawaii

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 15 oz can pizza sauce
  • 1 can Spam, grated (with a cheese grater)
  • 1 bag mozzarella cheese
  • 1 lb Velveeta cheese grated (with a spam grater)
  • Pepperoni, onions, black olives, etc (optional)

Brown hamburger (with some seasoning salt), drain.  Combine pizza sauce, spam and cheese with browned hamburger in a bowl.  Spread on bread and bake at 450º for 10-20 minutes or until bottom is toasted.  Can be topped with about any pizza topping.

OMGOSH.....really???  Only thing is, we never did cheese, for our family, 6 kids, our mom at home and our dad who sold advertising to our local CBS tv station.  So cheese was a luxury.  We had fried Spam with cheap white bread and mayo.  But still love grilled Spam, and now I do have it with pepper jack cheese on artisan white bread.

A topic on Packers Defense turned into a pseudo political and food topic. I guess many posters feel we have beat this topic to death. I understand that because its hard to keep talking about something that we have no control over.

But for me: I think that Witt will have trained up the CB's well this year. I hope the injury bug doesn't bite us there this year. I like our D-Line this year and expect a jump from the younger players. I feel that we are a bit thin at OLB yet have good starters. The starting Safety's are very good and have quality backups. In short this year just may have given me more hope than last year when it comes to the players themselves. As far as playcalling, my hope is that MM and Capers have extended self scouting sessions in order to rectifying the plays that Capers calls this year.

So while I am disgusted with Capers playcalling last year, I have hope for this year.

Guberment Cheese.

After getting destroyed in the first half, I would be doubling up on Julio for sure & jamming him at the line.

Dom's defenses used to be good. I was thrilled when they hired him to be the DC. The problem now is there is WAYYYY too much tape on the guy & he doesn't design anything new. If he's getting beat it's like....."Welp.....let's keep trying that same thing maybe they won't notice. " to the tune of 500 yards rushing vs Kaepernick or a billion yards throwing receiving by Atlanta.

If our DC threw ANYTHING new at an opposing offense, that offense would be shell-shocked & probably turn the ball over. It happened in 2010.

I just believe we need new film or else start cheating like the Seahawks & Patriots

I'll hang-up and listen.

The Zone Blitz was supposed to be an unpredictable blitz from a different player each time. However, even I  was often able to predict which player was coming on it right before the ball was snapped. That negated its effectiveness. Its a good plan but some players were unable to pull it off very well. Or they did not have to quick twitch/speed to get to the QB before he hits his read. Its a playcall that cannot be effective if used too often.

Increased offensive sophistication has rendered the zone blitz scheme less effective all across the league. It appears that now you have to rely on an O-lineman or RB blowing an assignment to get a free rusher & that does not happen as frequently as it once did.
