If you do what you always do, you're gonna get what you always get. The Lions play a style you have to counteract. You have to define the terms.
The Packers O-Line really put the Packers in a hole today in the first half.
That ridiculous fumble by Watson only gave up 3 points, but you cannot do that especially after you already had a first down! Just go OOB, FFS!
The Packers defense is going to have to play better than 34 points allowed in round 3. Find a way thru all the Lions holding. If they're not throwing flags on them now, they're never going to throw them in the playoffs.

I donโt recall seeing the Lions holding. Seems like people are having trouble accepting that the Lions are a much better team than GB right now. Itโs not close

Yeah that last second FG really stomped the crap out of the Packers. How will they ever recover from such a beating at the hands of the mighty Lions!
Seems like a lot of you all have a problem accepting the Packers are a pretty good football team and they're going to win a lot of games this year.

Not just holding.....time to open your eyes for a change instead of seeing only what you want to see.

THE REFS NOT CALLING FIVE OBVIOUS PENALTIES ON THE #LIONS, SCREWING THE #PACKERS OVER TONIGHT.
Green Bay only lost by three points and all of these affected the outcome of the game.

Maybe they should have recovered from the first beating enough to win for once.
People talk about "moral victories", but most immoral victories really aren't immoral at all. So I'd like one of those instead.
@YooperPackfan posted:So, answer this, is it piss poor coaching or does Gute suck at drafting defense?
We went to a new DC and into a 4-3 D, with defensive players from the Barry 3-4 Defense. Hard to get these guys playing in a new system when they weren't drafted for it. We need Edge Rushers, faster LBs and DBs. Gute has some work to do to get us new draftees and FAs that fit Hafley's defense. We will also need an OL guy or two. It's nice that our OL is versatile and can play various positions, but I'd like to see someone drafted who plays at his prime spot--i.e. Draft an OT who plays OT.
DET is the better team right now, but not by much. They need to capitalize and win a ring. Looks like it'll be them and PHI fighting for the chance to lose to KC or BUF.
If you're putting all your hopes and dreams on the refs calling a clean game, that's a losers mentality.
Packers were wholly unprepared in the first half outside of one drive. Once again MLF couldn't put two good halves of football together. Team continues to make stupid penalties. We finally didn't have a DL line up offside or jump into the neutral zone...but there was plenty of other dumbfuckery.
MLF has been surrounded with a lot tallant...but he is routinely outcoached. He has his best OL and RB stable ever in his career here...he's got an All Pro caliber TE, a stable of really good WR, and a veteran franchise QB...his playcalling should be the best it's ever been...yet it's not. We should be shredding defenses like the Lions...but every drive feels like a struggle.
It just feels like every year we are one position away from "taking that next step,"...one year it's CB, one year it's S, one year it's LB...but the reality is, good coaches find ways to win with the guys they have. Detoilet was severely undermanned last night due to a rash of injuries...but they didn't skip a beat.

Fair enough. Championship caliber teams find a way to overcome. As others have stated, complaining about the refs or expecting them to call a perfect game is a losing mentality. The Packers are a good team. I just think we need a few more pieces on defense.

I'm still not sure what the thought process was for Watson going airborne. He wasn't near the goal line, he already had the first down, and the way he jumped he was maybe going to gain an extra yard or two at most. He's 6'4 and about 215 pounds. Put your pads down and run over the smaller DB in front of you instead of trying to hurdle him.

Or maybe DET's depth is also pretty good. Despite the injuries on their roster, the rest of the roster that is healthy is still good enough to win a lot of games. It's not just coaching.

We've seen him do that a lot this year. I think he just thinks he's that guy. It's another thing an elite athlete does when he doesn't have all the nuances of an NFL WR down.

Ohhh right the guy with a broken leg.
Yeah.....he didn't play tonight - we're talking about players actually playing THIS year.
Fine, take out Hutch and add in Z. Smith. And add in a bunch of no-name backups. Their DLine creates pressure. It's better and/or better coached than what the Packers currently have.

I remember pitying Lions fans who always complained about the refs favoring Green Bay when their team simply was not good enough.

Boris, I love your passion for the Packers (like most here on this board). But I'm not certain that "a lot of [posters] have a problem accepting the Packers are a pretty good team" as you suggest. There's always gonna be a few negative nellies in the bunch, but it seems like you feel anyone who thinks the Lions are a better team right now doesn't think the Packers are also a good team.
The Lions.....
-whether healthy or injury-depleted,
-with pedestrian Goff at QB,
-a less-talented roster,
-and a meathead for a coach
....have beaten the better-coached, more talented Packers in 6 of the past 7 times they've played.

No way we lose next time!
Maybe Watson is trying to be the guy because he has more or less been expected to become the guy since he was drafted ? The fumble sucked for sure but I like seeing the extra effort. Better luck next time.
Having a legit #1 would be great and well worth pursuing but GB can make hay going the WR by committee route too.

The Packers are a top 8 team...they are good enough to thump middling teams. They are good enough to be in every game against all the top teams. They are good enough to beat the top teams at times.
They are not good enough to overcome their mistakes/injuries vs top teams.
That is where the Lions are different...they didn't play their best game...they had a ton of injuries. Over 60 minutes, they outplayed the Packers. Twice.
Hard pill for many to swallow, but for now, for this season (and last), they have passed the Packers.
People can smoke all the copium they want, listen to the Packer Media Fanboys like Andy Herman Petey B, and console themselves with all the bullshit DVOA, EPA per play metrics that all the nerds love to belabor...but ultimately teams are judged by wins and losses. And right now, in terms of the great wins, MLF is sucking the hind teat.
Prior to last season, it was either 12 or Gutey's fault for this teams shortcomings...but after the last two drafts/free agent cycles, I think it's pretty clear Gutey ain't the fucking problem. 12 hasn't been here for 2 seasons, so maybe he wasn't the fucking problem.
Time for people to start asking what I've been asking since he was first hired...does MLF have enough asshole in him to be an effective head coach?

Agreed.

Like the London game vs NYG when he was clear he didn't want to be there, this week he complained about the Sun-Thu-Thu schedule. His team feels that and follows his lead. They came out tight.
As a leader, he doesn't need to be like Campbell, but a touch of Holmgren would work.
A young team that is still learning and growing. Most of this group has been together for only 1.7647058824 seasons, so a steady and clear direction from the leader is key.

And when I say he needs to be more of an asshole, that's a broad brush...because at some point, if you're not a good coach, you are just an asshole.
My gripe is, MLF is too much of a players coach...he comes across as not serious. The attention to detail is often lacking...evidenced by missed tackles, stupid penalties and anything else you want to throw into the "dick steppin" category.
Campbell is a hard ass...but he is also a good coach. The Lions rarely beat themselves...that's mentality and comes from the top down. Leadership.
When MLF takes risks on play calls, I hold my breath...usually his tricks are not successful. The Lions run tricks, gimmicks, they go for it on 4th down a lot, and usually get it. They failed once last night...might have failed on the last one where Goff got stepped on but they didn't. And if they had failed again, Packers gone down and kicked the winning FG, maybe the conversation would be different.
But every year under MLF, the season ends with the same conversation...missed opportunities, woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Read some of the posts. "Blow it up!" "We need this and we need that" I got news for ya.....EVERY team needs this & that. Yeah even the Lions and Chiefs.
Packers have 4 losses this year. 2 to Detroit, 1 to Minnesota and 1 to the Eagles.
We'll see what happens come playoff time.
The better team doesn't always win - we've seen it numerous times with the Packers being the better team.
And then there is this ....
It's not the calls ....it's the consistency of the refs allowing blows to the head, holding and illegal pick plays for the Lions yet taking a TD away from the Packers on the same call. THAT is what I'm unhappy about....but that's the NFL, the darlings this year are the Lions & Chiefs. We'll see......I'll have a prediction for you all later for Super Bowl combatants.

And he had the ball further away from his body than any other player being tackled I can think of seeing this year. These guys are taught to wrap the ball up when they know they are going encounter contact....especially downfield where you have a better chance of defenders coming from behind you.
Our first offensive play of the game was a sack if I remember right. I think they were looking to go deep then, like they did to start the second half. That would've been great had they connected.
