What a moron. Arrogance does this to people. You are the coach of one of the up and coming teams in the league. You are just starting to build a good rep as a pro coach. Apparently, that comes with the same guarantees as a 5 time Super Bowl winning coach. He took the money expecting to be hired by a new team as a head coach. WRONG! How much is he earning as an assistant coach? Major fail.

Can't deny Clements as lateral hires (in this instance, OC to OC) can't be blocked. AVP was being considered for an OC and could be blocked since that ranks above QB coach.

EDIT: Cleveland hired its new OC this morning. Hope he's renting and not buying.

@alexmarvez: Source tells @NFLonFOX that @Browns are hiring John DeFilippo [former Raider QB coach] as new offensive coordinator.

Pretty sure lateral moves CAN be denied. It's the promotional ones from OC or DC to Head Coach that cannot.

I think that's correct. Thus the reason Wiston Moss was given the title of Asst HC and if you notice, has only been considered for HCing jobs. If under contract, I believe it was either McGinn or Demovsky that said he could be denied a DC opportunity because GB added the HC title to him

Yesterday word got out that the Redskins had requested permission to talk to three assistant coaches from other teams about their vacant defensive coordinator position. They were granted permission to talk to 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell and Chargers linebackers coach Joe Barry but were not permitted to talk to San Francisco defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. So what are the rules for NFL teams allowing their assistant coaches to talk to other teams about jobs?

The rule is pretty simple. A team canโ€™t block an assistant coach, including a coordinator, from interviewing for and accepting a job as a head coach. All other moves, including from assistant coach to coordinator, can be blocked.

Donatell did an OK job with the Packers. Go back and look at some of the slop he had to work with under Sherman. One season his starting linebackers were Nate Wayne, Na'il Diggs and Bernardo Harris. And if I remember correctly, he also had the immortal John Theirry at one of the defensive end positions.

Donatell wasn't a great coordinator, but he was Dick LeBeau compared to Slowik, the guy Sherman replaced him with. Talk about a scapegoat. Sherman ****-canned Donatell about 9 seconds after the 4th and 26 game.

@MikeGarafolo: Word is Redskins wanted to talk to Packers' Alonzo Highsmith for director of personnel job. Packers denied the request to interview.

@MikeGarafolo: Actually, let me fix that: Redskins have requested permission to interview Highsmith. No word yet on GB permission. My bad. Misunderstood.

No surprise. McCloughan was a former scout with the Packers and probably knows Highsmith well. Would be surprised if TT let him go.
