Interesting. Kind of ironic that after a 59-0 defeat, a firing/resignation would be in order at just about any top program...but this is an interesting twist.

If this job offer didn't materialize in the last couple days--and was in the works for the last couple weeks, say--maybe THIS helps to partially explain the (apparent) TOTAL LACK OF PREPARATION for the Big Ten title game?

Muschamp anyone? :-)

Same here, OSU is not a better job, he must have felt real uncomfortabe in Madtown.  Chyst would look good to me, I saw were Michigan may be interested in him.   Got to get some stability back in Badgerland.

is Barry coaching the bowl game

Many would be O.K. with Bevell but with as many as 10 NFL head coaches could be fired at the end of this season I think Bevell may wait to see what happens on that front. IIRC he already has had a couple of NFL interviews so he may think he is closer to the NFL than the BigTen. Paul Chryst would be outstanding. Chryst + Aranda = BigTen Championship.

I am surprised too, good point about the similarities to a 'firing'.

Barry had to know this was coming, wouldn't he?

I was trying to warm up to Gary, but too many times he made what I would consider bush-league mistakes.  I love Aranda and hope he stays, his defense was a ton of fun to watch.   Through the talk after the loss, one that I heard brought up a few times was that UW didn't have the personel to play his defense.  Also, the talking heads brought up the possibility that UW's restrictions for admission were a part of the problem with getting atheletes ala the $EC and Ohio Slate.

Chryst would be cool, I liked his offense... who else?  Could we get a big enough name in that would tolerate having Barry hover over him?

The whole recruiting thing worries me too.  Two coaches in 3 years isn't a good thing.  Will we have kids de-commit?  What about consistency in the athelete you want/need for a system?

Lots of questions here.

Also, I hope Barry coaches the club for the bowl game, but he hasn't indicated anything... yet.

Muschamp will field a championship defense, but his offenses were pathetic and he was a pretty poor recruiter. Not sure he's a fit. Paul Chryst is probably the best option if Pitt doesn't make it worth his while to stay. Get Chryst and Bo Pelini as DC, that's a potent combination. If Florida hadn't snapped him up I would have said Jim MacIlwain would have been the best option. A guy like Ruffin McNeil from East Carolina might not be a bad option either. Stealing Al Golden from Miami would be good, he could do really well in Madison.

No way that is a better job.  No way.

"I'm not surprised," a source close to the UW program said of Andersen's sudden departure. "Not surprised at all.

"He is a west coast guy and he didn't adjust to Wisconsin."

One potential candidate that is sure to draw attention is former UW offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, who is in his third season as head coach at Pittsburgh.

β€œI thought Paul would surface here or Nebraska,” the source said. β€œWhat did you think when he didn’t take the Nebraska job?

β€œI think Paul knew this was in play.”

From the news conference---

  • Barry had no idea it was coming, was told via phone call on plane.
  • Anderson indicated it was for family to get back to that part of the country.
  • Players were shocked.  Seniors asked Barry to coach the game, he told them he would get back to them.
  • Barry said he always has a list of coaches, would not reveal names.
  • Barry was happy with the program and where it was going.  Feels we have some of the best facilities in the country.  One of most consistent programs in country.  New Years Day bowls 5 years straight.

more coming....

Once again the Milwaukee media scoops the Madison media...

Barry does seem a bit miffed.  At the questions or situation, unclear.

  • Barry says won't set program back.
  • Ties to Wisconsin not important.  Coach will be a good 'fit'.
  • Phone is already ringing off the hook...
  • Barry is very flattered by the Seniors asking him to coach the bowl game.  Will make decision tonight.
  • Most other coaches out recruiting.  Coordinators asked to proceed with planning for the bowl game.

End of news conference.

Three things have come up the last three years (some mentioned already)

1) Tighter enrollment restrictions

B) Assistant pay

& Barry

I'm thinking GA didn't love it in Madison, and some combination of these three things were involved.  I'm suspicious Barry might be a backseat driver, but that is nothing by speculation.

Higher the North Dakota State guy, he is used to the cold, recruits pretty damn good with limited resources, seems like a pretty good coach.
