Rams C Scott Wells fractured his fibula in the first half of Sunday's game against the 49ers and will likely miss the rest of the season.  Wells, 33 next month, started the first 12 games this season, but he'll end up missing 13-of-32 games since signing a four-year, $24 million contract two offseasons ago. He and his $5.5 million salary are candidates to be released in March.

What to do to make room for Bell?

From Demovsky this morning...

If Dietrich-Smith’s injury is not season-ending, then the Packers will have to find another roster spot for Bell. Among their inactive players against the Lions were four injured players -- quarterback Aaron Rodgers (collarbone), linebacker Jamari Lattimore (quadriceps), tight end Brandon Bostick (concussion) and defensive end C.J. Wilson (knee).

This season is like a season of "Survivor- Frozen Wastelands."

Who will get the torch  extinguished this week?  EDS, an early favorite for the boot, has really surprised his fans, but will the latest chink in his armor be the end?  Lattimore has been rubbing people the wrong way, making tackles in the open field and such, will this be the last straw?  Tune in this week to see who else is surprisingly kicked off the island in an amazing double elimination.

If the Packers did sign Bell they didn't submit the paper work before the NFL offices closed yesterday so there was no announcement. This delay gives them all day today to decide on who to move to make room for Bell.

They may be waiting for after AR's scan to use that as an excuse to put him on IR so the fans won't freak out about shutting him down for the year with a relatively minor injury.

There sure is some weird stuff going on this year. Based on comments from the players themselves, Cobb's injury is worse than reported so using the IR-to-return on him might have been a mistake. And according to Franklin, he doesn't have a neck injury and seemed mad about being put on IR.

When a roster is as stressed (just to fill out game day actives!) as this one has been, you have to expect some "weird" things to happen.  Learning curve that nobody hopes is revisited next year.

There will be a lot fans that will freak out if Rodgers doesn't play anymore this year regardless of what the Docs say.

I agree, something weird with the reporting of the injury extent/severity.

As to who Drew Smith is:

Drew Smith hosts a syndicated Packers talk show with wide receiver Randall Cobb called Inside the Huddle that airs Mondays in Wisconsin, so he’s a pretty good authority on news related to the injured Green Bay playmaker.

After going on short-term injured reserve after a Week 6 game on Baltimore, rules state Cobb can’t practice for six weeks and can’t play for at least eight weeks, making the earliest he could return Week 15 at the Dallas Cowboys.

Cobb is eligible to practice this week, but seeing as he apparently hasn’t been cleared to run, the odds that Cobb returns in time to play this season are becoming longer by the day.

According to a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Cobb suffered a broken fibula, but neither the Packers nor Cobb have confirmed the nature of the injury.

In the aftermath of his injury, Cobb was using a Segway scooter for several weeks to move about, unable to return to his typical day-to-day activity.

Cobb was placed on the injured reserve/designated to return list on Oct. 15 with what was originally reported as a fractured fibula.

However, the injury was actually to the tibia, the larger of the two bones in the lower leg.

Tib vs Fib is huge from what I understand.

While CAR's defense has been the key for them this year, this could hurt them in the playoffs.

Panthers believe RB Jonathan Stewart has a torn MCL.

Having broken a fibula and being casted for 6 weeks, I have no idea how he could break a tibia and be in any sort of walking apparatus as opposed to being casted. IIRC, never was on crutches, was he?.

well, if they can keep this going it appears I was wrong about Cobb (and gladly).

from Demovsky:

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- When receiver Randall Cobb was seen running routes and catching passes from backup quarterback Scott Tolzien at AT&T Stadium on Sunday before the Packers' game against the Dallas Cowboys, that was the strongest evidence yet that he could be close to a return.

It was the first time he had been seen working out in public since he fractured his tibia on Oct. 13 and was subsequently placed on the temporary injured reserve list.

Cobb was eligible to return against the Cowboys but was not cleared to return. That could come this week.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Cobb worked out again Monday and received positive reviews.

“I was told [the workout] was very good,” McCarthy said. “He's moving. Everything looks good. We'll see how he is [Tuesday]. Wednesday is really kind of the day that we set the plan for all the players.”

Even if Cobb returns to practice on Wednesday, it's not a given he would be activated for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cobb is not currently on the 53-man roster. A spot would have to be cleared for him to return.

Neal battling abdominal injury but producing for Packers

Green Bay Press Gazzette

by Weston Hodkiewicz on 12-20-13

Mike Neal doesn’t need to utter a word to Kevin Greene for the Green Bay Packers outside linebackers coach to know his pupil is hurting.

A simple glance every now and then tells the story.

“The man lays it on the line,” Greene said. “I go, ‘How you feeling?’ and he just looks at me … I know he’s hurting with the deal, but he’s really pushing himself through it for his brothers.”

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound converted defensive lineman has been on the injury report for the better part of a month with an abdominal injury that’s occasionally held him out of practice. He’s probable to play through it this Sunday.

Coincidentally, Neal is also in the midst of the most impactful stretch of his four-year career with four sacks in his past five games, including a critical one that forced a fumble in a 22-21 win over the Falcons.

Labeled as injury-prone during his first two years in the league, he’s played in 25 of a possible 26 games over the past two seasons

“We’re trying to get mike to game day as healthy as we can,” defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. “Mike’s role, he’s played an awful lot more outside than we anticipated, but he’s also going inside and rushing some inside.

We like that combination of Clay and Mike with Mike inside and Clay outside. We think that creates some problems for people. When we’ve had that, it’s been pretty good for us.” continue

coach Mike McCarthy said Clay Matthews seemed to suffer a repeat injury. He did. Broken thumb again. Couldn’t cast & play last time

That should be the final nail in the coffin for Clay's 2013 season.

I don't completely dismiss Kyle Orton from getting hot for a week and helping the Cowboys pull the upset.  I remember Orton slicing up the Packers a number of times when he was with the Bears/Chiefs and he's got much better weapons to help him in Dallas.

Orton is not the guy you want starting for 16 games, but for a game or 2, I think he can keep the Cowboys competitive considering he's got some big time help around him in Bryant, Witten, and Murray.

I know so many say injuries are part of the game, but Philly's Chip Kelly has a nutrition and training staff that uses modern science to keep his team healthy. Could just be coincidence, but they were relatively injury free this year. Maybe TT and MM need to explore if they're cutting edge enough in this area to compete in today's NFL.
