The Titans want teams to stack the box and man up against their receivers because they love to take shots down the field. You can’t let them dictate. THIS is truly the game where Pettine’s scaredy cat quarters defense that keeps the offense in front of them is necessary. You can’t cheat up to stop Henry and let Tannehil lob them deep...Brown and Davis are physical and will go. You can’t beat Aaron Rodgers in a shootout with a RB...that’s bringing a baseball bat to a gun fight.

This place sounds like a rowdy family Christmas gathering...we’re arguing about sports, politics, and racism (all encapsulated in the single topic “Tim Tebow”). How very 2017 of you all, but it’s 2020 and family gatherings are gauche and that means we all get a break from personal insults, Tebow based discussions, and any other topic that makes Henry dig into his seemingly endless bank of slightly insulting/occasionally gross bag of nicknames.

Whoever figured that in 2020 you could smoke weed at a family gathering at Christmas and the family gathering would be the illegal act.

Perfect write up. This is a risky pick, but if MLF can mould this guy his potential is so high. Unfortunately, his floor is really low too.

Yep. Luckily we got Rodgers reversing time which means there's probably at least two more years to coach this guy up and evaluate if they made the right pick or shit the bed.

Then you let them take shots down the field.  Alexander and King are regarded as two of the better corners in the league.  Let them be corners.   And Savage has been playing better in pass defense as well.

You put a dime or quarters defense out there against the Titans and sure it might limit big passing plays but it also means you have more DBs on the field than LBs and DL.

The Titans go heavy and they will chew up and spit out that approach 5-10 yards at a time.  And who’s to say Henry won’t go for 60?  He gets in the open field good luck with a corner or safety or hybrid DB trying to bring him down.

The Packers strength is their offense and versatility on offense.  But you negate that by limiting their possessions or forcing turnovers or both.  There’s no shootout when GB only gets 5-6 possessions in the game. That’s what will happen if they play a prevent style of defense.  Henry will get 30+ carries and probably 200+

Good point! Now, can you tell those smug faces 49ers to quit laughing about last year’s playoff game?

This makes me love the pick even more.

The Titans defense ranks dead last in third-down conversion percentage (52.6) and 30th in red zone touchdown percentage (70.9), a potentially disastrous combination of situational incompetence when facing Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

Matt LaFleur’s team might have the best situational offense in football. The Packers rank third in the NFL on third downs (49.1) and first in the red zone (78.4).

So, for all the "Derrick Henry will get a billion yards & a million Touchdowns" takes.....

My take is.... Tennessee. Try & stop this Packer offense.

Really need to see more then one carry from AJ Dillon this week...

It’s not just about scheme on defense.  It’s about technique and more importantly execution.

This has not been a good tackling squad for a while now.   So even if they play the “keep everything in front of them” type of defense it could get really ugly.  The Packers D will have to bring their A game on Sunday.

If Williams can't go on Sunday night, LaFleur will be forced to play Dillon. That might turn out to be a good thing. A 250-pound RB with fresh legs might be quite the weapon in January.

YES!!! You don't want to die a "slow death" to this team and limit our possessions. Play 3 interior d-lineman, Smiths, 2 ILBers, 2 CBs and 2 Safeties on early downs.

Too bad it's not January yet.

Coach 'em up, Mike!

Pack dog, that’s a horrible thing to say!  How can you say such a hateful thing?  The moderators need to delete this IMMEDIATELY!  I am so offended!  Let’s be honest:  what really should happen is that their dogs should be shot and roasted over a rotisserie.

The 49ers gameplan is not going to work every week for every team. Running teams beat GB because their defense is containing, limiting, or stopping Rodgers and they don’t have to pass. Also Shannahan has more common sense than most OC’s, most OCs get impatient and abandon the run when Rodgers gets going, Shanny never gave up on his running game.

Rodgers isn’t going to be stifled or slowed down by this defense, they just don’t have the horses. They can bleed the clock all they want, having the ball for 40 min a game doesn’t mean shit if you only manage 16 points while Rodgers scores 30 points in 20 min. They want shot plays early to keep up with the score, pressure him heavily with their D and then bleed the clock late. You don’t want to be bleeding the clock while you’re chasing Rodgers on the scoreboard.

We are going to have our own version of Derrick Henry.

I think you need to load up to stop the run but that’s not really Pettine’s style.  He would rather keep things in front of him and play more nickel and dime and zone.  That won’t work against a run first team like the Titans.

I’d much rather get burned on a couple of longer pass plays compared to letting a team methodically work down the field on the ground.

If nothing else, longer pass plays put the strength of this Packer team back on the field. I think all 3 units lose their mojo when the opponent puts together a 6-8 minute methodical drive. King and Jaire can get burned on plays, but it's due to mental errors, not physical ones. And they make more good plays than bad in their young careers. Put the challenge to them so you can have help in the box.

I don’t see this as a problem on multiple fronts.

The strength of the Packers D is pass defense.  It’s time Pettine starts calling the game to acknowledge that.   Put the CB’s on islands and dare them to take their shots while staking the box all game long.

Not only does it give us our only shot to stop Henry, when they do score, it will most likely be quick which means more possessions for Rodgers.   Force the shootout or make Henry run through an 8 man wall.

RB rotation should be interesting this weekend. Obviously, Jones and Dillon will be the primary backs, but who may be active behind them?
Williams was put back on the PS on the 15th after 5 weeks on the IR (MCL sprain). I assume he's practicing, but no idea if he's in condition to play.
YA posted earlier in this thread that Patrick Taylor started practicing on the 17th from Reserve/NFI (Sept. 08-Lisfranc injury), but he is likely in the same shape as Williams.
There's a guy named Mike Weber that has been elevated from PS to active roster as a Covid replacement for a couple or so games in November, but didn't see any action.

There have been a ton of changes to roster/PS/IR rules this year, and I found another one I wasn't aware of.
--The NFL also added a new wrinkle to the practice squad that provides teams with some limited protections for keeping practice squad players. Teams can designate four players every week that are protected from being signed by other teams. This protection starts on Tuesday each week, so every practice squad player is still available to be signed to the regular roster of another team after their team’s game that week until the deadline on Tuesday--.
The Packers protected Weber the first 2 weeks of this month, but haven't since.
Williams was protected once before he got hurt.

So many interesting sub plots this week:

- Will Dillion see his most extensive action of the season? When asked about him AR said "as always with the young guys it's mental. A lot is put on the RBs as far as being a runner, blocker, and receiver".

- Will our defense play primarily "run" or "pass"? Some are much higher on King than I presently am. He just does not look like the athlete I expected when we drafted him. He ran a 4.4 forty and had nearly a 40 inch vertical at the combine. I just don't see that explosiveness on the field and worry about him if left alone with their WRs.

- Will Linsley play which will allow us to get Patrick, who has been our weakest link on o-line, off the field.

- Will Austin play more which will mean more Jet Sweep / motion in our offense.

- Will the defense play well but everyone will still bitch and moan if the Titans score more than 20 pts?

Another thing few of us have talked about is that Wagner has played really well. If Taylor had not been hurt I wonder if Wagner would have supplanted Turner at RT, I prefer him ..... but of course not making that decision

First thing they need to trust Dillon with is pass pro.  Then the presnap eye candy machinations and rpo's.

That said, the only guy I see him potentially replacing in the future is Williams. I just don't see him offering the kind of versatility and dynamism Jones in this scheme.
