Getting his body ready is for sure doable. Playing DL technique. Come on man. You grab the two guys across and see if you can plug the hole or better yet push them backwards. We are not reading defenses to know what route to run in the blink of an eye. We aren't keying off of the guard and back to allow time to react to eye movement of the QB so he doesn't have a chance to run for +20 yds while you forgot to cover the TE leaving him open for practicing his dunk on the goal post.

It's DL for Vince sake!

Exactly. I believe this is why I like Mark Murphy better than a lot of local media folks that still yearn for the days of Bob Harlan. It's a business, and all decisions need to be made with that in mind.

If Jolly can contribute to the Packers, the Packers should absolutely bring him in, regardless of what's happened in the past.

good points dumdum.....the whole "football" shape is a joke. It is friggin February.....I think he can make it.

MnBonaducheese could take him to his nearest curves and put him through the paces....I am guessing in a month he would be football shape...and do zynga with the best of them.

How many 300 pounders are ever in "football shape" in the offseason.
Smiler

And now I am dining on shrimp the size of a small sofa with a cocktail that would kill smaller men. Sarge is watching Denis the Menace with her big Sis and Hubby who are visiting for 3 more daze.

Old people are leaving in droves. It's March. Can't wait for the drunk college kids to show up next weekend.

BTW, some utterknee that got sentenced to pokey for bribing a couple judges jumped off the top of the causeway at 4:30 AM. Took all day to find the body.
What a waste of man hours.

I like John Jolly. I really hope he gets his life together. Sounds like he's trying.

The question is whether or not he still has talent to play at this level. I see no reason why GB shouldn't bring him back in for a minimum deal and see what he has to offer.

They will compete in TC in about 6 months. I should have been more definitive. I was not clear enough in what I wrote. I should and said they should bring him in, but I honestly am skeptical of any production this year. Of course I will welcome him back, that is not the issue with me. I am skeptical because of the way the league is. A 30 year old body is a 30 year old body. As you get older it takes even longer to bring yourself back to where you need to be. In todays NFL, 30 years is OLD!!!
Should Jolly ever find his way back on the team, I'd expect his role to be similar to Neal's this past season. That is, limiting snaps initially, until he plays his way into more time.
Speaking of Neal, there are some similarities with Jolly's circumstances. Of course, there are some glaringly obvious differences, with age being primary, but they're both trying to work their way back to "football shape" after an extended period of time away.
Stranger things have happened, I suppose...

TT brought Koren Robinson back to the NFL after his felony, so doubt TT writes Jolly off right away because of legal troubles. TT will due his due diligence and determine if Jolly has turned his life around and is ready to contribute to the team. The comments I've heard from Packers players seem to support Jolly, so locker room doesn't seem to be an issue.

This

I'm usually not in favor of supporting players that have a bit of knucklehead in them but Jolly really brought his issues onto himself and it's not like he was convicted of a violent crime. I think there is a difference there.

Jolly would be like another draft pick and the reality is that he plays a position that they could use his help. I have a feeling he's going to come back motivated and I'm sure the team will do what they need to figure out if it's worth the risk.
I love players who are hungry, something to prove, maybe with that proverbial chip on their shoulder. IOW, I'm with AR.

Go Jolly!!!!!

Edit- Gosh, Hungry, that's some impressive purple dr(sk)ank. WOWEE
Watching that and reading about JJ over the past couple years JJ seems like a decent enough guy who like millions has an addiction problem.
I just have to doubt whether he can stay clean though.

And if I recall correctly, that's what at least one person on the Packers staff said - that they practically begged him to stay in Green Bay during the off-season, or at the very least, avoid hanging with his posse if he did go back to Houston. I remember them saying they were pretty frustrated that he just wouldn't listen. Maybe he'll understand their point a little more clearly now.
First step to his coming back?:

The Packers have reduced the salary of DE Johnny Jolly from $2.521 million to $715,000, saving them approximately $1.8 million of cap space.

That leaves the team at roughly $17.9 million heading into the start of free agency.

Jolly had received the first-round restricted free agent tender of $2.521 million before he was suspended for violating the substance abuse program. When he was reinstated his salary went back on the books.

Given his history, the Packers weren't going to pay a lot of money to give Jolly another shot, so they made a deal with his agent to knock his salary down to $715,000.

It's not clear that the Packers have made a decision to give Jolly another chance. They may just be keeping their rights to him until they have a chance to talk to him and work him out. It's not known if that has already happened or will happen in the near future.

Either way, the Packers can take their time with a decision on Jolly

By coming to terms on a reduced salary deal, the team can now bring him to the offseason program, which kicks off April 15, and organized team activities and training camp to see how much his skills have eroded after a three-year layoff and six-month prison stay.

Hopefully, he has learned his lesson. I'm all for bringing him back. The Packers have a hole on the d-line and maybe this will help. Before the purple drank, he was a hell of a player. I think he will be motivated to be back in the NFL. I'm sure he has seen what "real life" is while he hasn't been in the NFL. Hopefully, that will keep his head on straight. He's still young.
