Defensive end Johnny Jolly was not present for the first day of the Packers' off-season conditioning program, but he is expected to be there soon, an NFL source familiar with his situation said Tuesday.

At the time of McCarthy's comments, Jolly was working with the Houston court system to allow him to leave the state and remain in compliance with his probation. The source said it's possible he could arrive as early as today in Green Bay. Workouts began on Monday.continue

Hopefully resolved quickly.

Jolly's on formal probation for a felony though, which carries restrictions on traveling across state lines. Obviously they'll work something out (and moving at the speed of mud) but it's not surprising.

From NFP:

β€œI think I have a great shot at going back to those guys,” Jolly told the NFP last summer. β€œThey’re a great organization. The coaches are very good, the players are good. I know they have supported me 100 percent.

β€œI want to say that would be a dream come true, but I made it in the NFL before. So, I would say it would be like another dream. It would be a journey and going back to do the things I love and showing everybody you can make mistakes but it’s the way you correct the things you’ve done wrong. I want to make the Packers look good.”

.
He should be in GB this week - any local sightings ?

MAYBE....Good fortune smiles on the Packers this year

Then GB adds back all these guys in addition to another draft class:

Nick Perry
Bryan Bulaga
Derek Sherrod
Desmond Bishop
Johnny Jolly
Andrew Quarless
Brandon Saine
DJ Smith...oops !
A fully recovered Alex Green
A better prepared DuJuan Harris
A fully recovered Davon House

β€œI know I’ve seen a change, and I know your family has seen a change, and we are just so darn proud of you today just for the progress that you’ve made,” said judge Denise Bradley, who originally sentenced him. β€œI didn’t know if we would see this day happen.”

quote:
The Packers sent director of player development Rob Davis and senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith to Houston for the ceremony, another sign they’re backing his attempt.

He’s rejoining the team for OTAs next week, with no illusions about his chances.

β€œI don’t know anyone who sat out three years and was able to go back to the same team,” Jolly acknowledged. β€œI met with the Packers a couple of weeks ago. They understand my situation and they are willing to be there for me, so I’m just doing everything I can to be in shape and do everything I need to do for my team.

β€œThey have been there, and I’m going up there to do my best to show them what they want to see this year. So I’ll be doing everything in my power to get ready.”
Sweet. I realize Johnny is a long shot, but I can't help but have fond memories for the 2007 and 2009 versions of Jolly in particular.

In 2006, I just don't remember Jolly showing a whole lot as a rookie. Then came training camp in 2007. I remember during camp Bob McGinn detailing who beat who in different drills, etc. and I recall Jolly had one of the best camps of any D-Linemen he had ever seen.

He was a major influence on the defense really being very solid on the way to an 8-1 start in '07. Once he got hurt, the defense was still pretty good, but it definitely lost a bit of its edge which among other things came back to bite the team in the cold vs. the Giants.

In 2008 he wasn't as good as he got hurt early and never really played well all year.

2009, I know there were some that thought Jolly was the best D-Lineman on the team, better than Cullen Jenkins.

The Pack certainly has survived without Jolly, but without question, when he was playing and playing well, they were much much tougher up front, particularly against the run. It would be a nice surprise if Jolly still has something left of what he once was.

I didn't even think it was a particularly close call.

I'm a bit skeptical after three years out of the league, but anything is possible and hopefully he'll manage to at least get his life back on track.
I think he's just too well suited for end to move him to NT. Jolly has(had?) a knack for swatting the ball and It is(was?) one of his special qualities. He did it 10 times his last season here. There's nothing more frustrating for a QB than to have a pass batted down. They have to start messing with the loft on the ball and that creates time and angles for interceptions. That's a lot harder to pull off from NT.
