From PFT:

Sitton was scheduled to make $5.9 million in the final year of his contract, which might have caused some teams to pass on trading for the three-time Pro Bowler. He made two of those Pro Bowls in the last two seasons and has been named a second-team All-Pro in each of the last three seasons, so it’s hard to imagine that someone won’t be adding him to their roster soon.

I think the next time anyone on this forum complains about a player holding out for more money, more guaranteed money, etc. they need to think about what happened to Sitton. If it truly was nothing to do with Sitton being a locker room cancer, they cut a Pro-Bowl level guy after he played the last couple of years on his contract at a below-market rate. He's started 79 consecutive games at a high level. He's been available to play, he's been good, and he's played on a team-friendly deal based on his level of performance. He played hurt, he was forced to play LT last year with no preparation and didn't complain. These are the guys I like to cheer for as a Packer fan. Yet, we keep POS human beings like Guion.

After todays' moves, the Packers are now among the league leaders in cap space. Should have about $16M to use for in-season extensions.

Btw the Giants (with Ben Macadoo) and Raiders already rumored to be interested in Sitton.

Never!

Particularly when he looks like he did the natural way.  I want that kind of Hoss at C.

I don't think I could take a whole season of watching Barclay's shotgun snaps, they look like a guy taking a weak piss.

Man I'm sorry but TT blew it with this IMO.

His salary is cap space we can use to sign the rest of our line, many of whom are going to be FA's soon.  Sitton, Lang, Tretter, Barclay and Bakh are all FA's at the end of the year.  If cutting Sitton now means we can keep the rest of them, then it's a good move.  Otherwise you risk losing a bunch of guys all at once.

I think they're just making a hard decision now so their line isn't totally thrown into disarray next year.

If what you say is true, why would you not trade or release Sitton earlier so you could build cohesion in the OL during training camp?

Who is the 5th OL starter in 8 days in Jax?

Barclay & Lane Taylor are awful.

Josh Sitton doesn't beat around the bush. No BS. But there was something a little off when he exclaimed at his locker last week "No, actually the back feels great. Everything feels great. This is probably the best I've felt coming out of training camp in 3 or 4 years." There had been a rumor that Sitton and TJ Lang would not be re-signed by the Green Bay Packers in the offseason. Ted Thompson has not re-signed most offensive linemen including Daryn Colledge and center Scott Wells. Now Mike McCarthy's options at left guard are Lane Taylor, who had a poor game against the 49ers, Don Barclay, move TJ Lang or Brian Bulaga for the season opener. The team cut guard Lucas Patrick earlier today - Mike Clemens

I don't know why TT would do this outside of something crazy like PEDs or off-field issues.  Sitton is a top 5 guard in this league so I have no idea how the Packers are better in 2016 after this.  And since they forego a comp pick b/c they cut him instead of let him become a UFA, they give up a 4th round pick at worst and 3rd rounder at best.  Is that $5.9m so important to the 2016 and/or 2017 roster?  I just don't see it with the Packers having one of the best cap situations in the league with very little dead money and less deferred money than most teams.

We'll never know exactly what happened but with the facts that are out there now, this is a ridiculously stupid move.  Hope it doesn't kill morale too.

This is a head scratcher. I'm not holding my breath, but maybe Thompson's hand was forced to see his value, and he could possibly re sign. Without guaranteed dollars I'm sure sitton was uneasy with this season. If he resigns a 3 yr 20 million with 8 guaranteed via roster bonus, it makes perfect sense. Doubt it though

Besides for lane a bahk, they also have lacy coming up. I can see them wanting to open up as much money as possible to get these extensions done this year. Green Bay sure seems to let a lot of players walk that. But I've yet to ever feel like the brass upstairs has let me down. The coaches have, the players have. Let's see where this is going

Because you don't know who is going to get injured during preseason.  If Lang went down and was out for the season, they most likely would have kept Sitton.

Paying big money for Lacy would likely be a gigantic mistake. He's the type of guy that will likely have a big year in a contract year and then tank after he gets paid big bucks.

OL is very dependent on continuity in picking up blitzes, stunts, etc. We've gone from having a very solid interior line (including what many felt were the top guard tandem in the NFL) to who knows what. As someone posted above, Sitton made Bakh look good by cleaning up for him. OG isn't like a RB where you can plug in a guy (at least on 1st and 2nd down) you bring off the street. OG/OL reps are what you have training camps for. As someone said, if you were going to even think about doing this, you needed to play some guys in live games together in the combinations you were going to go with.

TT doesn't place a lot of value in interior OL's. The whole thing with Whale and Rivera quite a few seasons ago as well as the revolving door at C screams that. But this is a head scratcher even with the $$ factor. Cap money? Who are they going to sign September-January? Sitton is in his last year.

From JSO chat with Silverstein:

How much input do you feel MM has in cuts. Would he need to sign off on such a big move as Sitton cut ?

I would think so. Thompson would probably ask him, can you live without him? This is different than spending money in free agency. McCarthy has to win now and Thompson better be checking with him to see if he can win with that O-line.

I think Lacy is a franchise rb. I think last year he learned his lesson, and any contract he signs will be insentive laden to provide motivation.

I'm still baffled. Sitton is/was a future packer HOF'er, and he always showed up. Their taking a huge gamble going into the season down two previous starters on the interior, especially considering our tackles are injury prone. Early last year through the first 6 games the O line carried this team with their screen game. That's not a plug and run scheme.

I'm still hoping he resigns tomorrow morning. Sitton was the best lineman in the division. It's a big loss, and one that I doubt was necessary.

After a whole mess of cocktails I've decided Sitton invoked the nuclear option and asked for multiple year extension and Ted said no. Josh said cut me loose.

But I still hate Barclay.
