As Herman alluded to in his video, you have to have Barry's replacement pretty much locked up already.  If he really is waiting to sit back, take a breath, have his meetings to actually decide the plan of action, it may not be a good situation.

However, nobody is really sure how things went in terms of keeping Pettine when MLF was hired.  So I can't put all the fault on MLF for that situation.  Obviously, the Barry hire has not worked out.  His first year was actually not that bad.  Keeping him for the 3rd year was the biggest mistake.  However, maybe MLF put the feelers out about people he could get instead, and didn't like the answers.  Maybe candidates didn't like the possible instability that could happen if Jordan Love was a bust.  Now that it appears those concerns are not necessary, maybe better candidates will be interested.

Overall in terms of MLF, I'm glad he is our coach.  He genuinely seems to be a good human being.  Absolutely he has some faults.  Not being able to hire top coordinators or hiring the wrong ones is an issue.  Holding on to them for too long is tough.  It hasn't turned out well for the team, but loyalty is a good trait to have for stability and long term success. He's won 13 games three times, has only had one losing season and playoff absence.  Successfully dealt with an ever weirder, diva, hall of fame QB as a first time head coach and then successfully dealt with his departure.  Followed by a make or break season for the franchise in which he held an extremely young team together when it looked really bad.

The grass is not always greener.

Also, found this as it relates to the post MM coaching search.

OMG.  It's fun to imagine how Dan Campbell might have dealt with the last 4 years of AR.

Do they still draft Love?  Does AR still have 2 more MVPs?  Does AR still have kneecaps?

I like MLF as a coach more this year than in past years. With the help and blessing of the front office I'm sure, he allowed Rodgers to get away with far too much. For this team now and probably for the next couple of years, he's a great fit. At heart, I think MLF is a coach/teacher, and that works well with this young team. I also think he has grown into the HC position. Guys obviously want to play for him. This year, he's yelled at guys on the sideline more than ever in the past, he's shown more emotion during games, and he just comes off stronger now than in past years. Getting rid of Rodgers has allowed MLF to expand. Of course, he has things to work on -- getting the AC hires right, playcalling under pressure, are two off the top of my head -- but he's improving. And taking a look at that list of coaches interviewed... a couple of bullets dodged there!

I think MLF will be more comfortable hiring a defensive coordinator that is more experienced (and thus would have been more of a threat to take over if things went south).

Given what Love looked like at the end of the year, MLF is not going anywhere for at least 2 more years, and likely will be here a lot longer than that.

If he'd have hired a Wade Phillips type (not specifically as he's too old, but that type that had been a moderately successful head coach before) and Love looked like the Las Vegas game version of love, MLF's job might have been on the line this off-season with a competent defensive coach in line to take over if the defense had improved.

I think Love's success that shows the MLF didn't just ride ARs coattails, allows MLF to be a lot more comfortable to bring in senior guys.

MLF unless he decides to quit is not going anywhere for quite some time.  IMHO this year he has shown just how good of a coach we have.

To me he has been able to show just what he is capable of when he has a QB that is willing to playing as the system is designed and not wanting to do things his way like AR did his las couple of years.  Hell after he mentioned he was going to pay more attention on defense even they pulled it together.

To me if he gets a better DC on this team and they pull another big draft this year look out for the Packers.

This is like watching MM all over again.   The offense is fire right now but it won't be forever.   We fail to take advantage of it and turn it into multiple trophies because of absolute trash at the coordinator level.

He has to move on from Barry..   If he can land a top tier D coordinator, they can win multiple SB's.   If he fails at this, he will not reach his potential.

It may also be the case that Gute needs to draft better talent on D.  Don't know how.  He's thrown mountains of high picks at it.  Find an up and coming scout or personnel guy that knows D?  He's had a higher hit rate with FA's, and there are some good ones this offseason, but I don't know what kind of $$$ he'll have for that.

Is the former BAL personnel guy still with the team?  Wasn't he an OL guy?  If so, it looks like he's having an impact.

The only place they are lacking talent is at safety IMO.

It's a philosophy issue.   Barry plays not to lose.   He is okay with a 6 min drive for 80 yards on 15 plays.   He fails to consider that by the end of the game he has limited his own teams opportunities to score and worn the fuck out of the defense who then inevitably breaks.

MLF finished the year strong. That's a great thing.

The defense played 90 fucking plays vs. the Cowboys. That's friggin insanity.

I want hard-hitting snot bubble defense that scares everyone along with league leading takeaways and large amounts of 3 & outs per game. I want tackling improved to elite levels. The talent is there on the defense to get this done. Let's find the right person for the DC job and hire them!

I do too, but we have to acknowledge that takes risking injury in training camp. You can't do it during the regular season with the limited practices. You have to practice those fundamentals in August the way the Steelers do. To the ground instead of futzing around with the padded donuts. In the AFC North  you have to fight your way to the top of the division. With the Lions trying to bully the lines and winning our division you'd hope there'd be more emphasis on physicality in training camp moving forward

MLF pissed off 12 by scrimmaging against other teams instead of giving him mental reps against his own so there's a desire for more live reps in his philosophy. It's a matter of balancing it against wear and tear.

I don't think there's a chance in hell they'd bring in Wink when you read about the things that were going on in NY personality wise. MLF has shown he likes more control over the defense if it's his job on the line. It was all but confirmed Barry has another year on his contract today. Don't have my hopes up for turnover.

All gas, no brake. It may not work all the time, but with the mentality of this young team and the good offense they have, it's the correct strategy. Be proactive, not reactive.

Besides, with JoeBa, the offense was usually down by seven before it touched the ball.

Just keep ignoring him

Here's an article from The Ringer talking about how Shanahan has changed/ evolved his offense since the time of working with MLF.
Some interesting items in there

The other part I found interesting was Kyle's comments on why he needs a fullback in his offense and why he values juszczyk so highly.

I think MLF feels the same way and will be looking for one of those guys to add to 2024 roster

MLF ranks # 5 in the league as a playcaller

" Matt LaFleur checks every box. Adaptability, one-off game plans, cohesive structure, the ability to adjust on the fly — everything you want from a play-caller LaFleur has it.

The Aaron Rodgers era was a testament to La Fleur's flexibility and game plan-specific strengths. He bent his Shanahan-esque offense to Rodgers' will, incorporating more shotgun and quick game passing and freedom at the line of scrimmage than those offenses typically believe in. That era also got some pretty sweet individual game plans, like the Aaron Jones game vs. the Arizona Cardinals.

With Jordan Love, we saw more of La Fleur's sequencing and overall structure pay off. Not only did the offense make sense in terms of how it was sequenced, but LaFleur had such a clear vision for how this young unit would come together during the year.

It was rough at first, but La Fleur never wavered. He trusted his system and coaching would sort it all out in the end, and he was right. "

They also beat the Chiefs and scored more points vs. that KC defense than any other team all year long including the Super Losers... SF.

MLF: Bears interviewed Mannion and then MLF interviewed him during the NFC Championship Game (which he didn't care to watch). I guess we had more to offer. I was surprised they let him out of the building.

Bears lose to Packers AGAIN! 😄

Some more context on the Mannion hiring

The Bears are obviously drafting a QB. They need a good QB coach for their new franchise QB.

Like MLF said, I'm surprised they let him out of the building.

Let's see if the Bears get someone better than Mannion. 🤷‍♂️

Both Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon showing up here.
Swapping out Derrick Henry for Dillon would be a dream from heaven, then you'd have (2) RBs with 80 % conversion rate.
