Notre Dame Student Says Teammates Knew Manti Te’o Was Catfishing For Heisman

As more and more information comes out you can either believe one of two things.

Either Te’o came up with this on his own to cover up a bigger story or he found out he was being duped and continue to lie to the media.

A student on the Notre Dame campus wrote an op-ed piece on the situation and believes it is the latter:

We all saw this coming. Well, not ALL of this — but enough to make too many of us shudder. Notre Dame is not like most schools with big-time athletic programs — our student body population pales in comparison to other large schools. And what does that mean? Well, word spreads fast on Notre Dame’s campus, and many students knew a long time ago that there was something very fishy (or should I say, cat-fishy) about Manti Te’o’s relationship with ‘Lennay Kekua’.

Yet, even before the Michigan State game, Manti Te’o was being questioned by his teammates. Apparently Manti had only “seen” Lennay once — but I assume “seen” was a rather loose term used for “chatted with online” (however, this is extremely complicated to understand since they were reportedly talking since 2009, according to the Te’o family). The debate among teammates wasn’t whether or not Manti actually knew this girl — it was clear that they had been in contact; no, players just didn’t think that it was fair to call Lennay Kekua Manti’s girlfriend, period (it is well-known on campus that he has had relations with other girls during his time at Notre Dame). They recognized what was going on for what it was — a terrible publicity stunt used to fuel Manti Te’o’s Heisman campaign. In fact, many of the players privately commented that they didn’t want the students to wear leis in support of Manti and wouldn’t participate themselves — they cited that the team never responded so publicly to tragic events for other players. But there was also the feeling that Manti didn’t deserve to benefit from public publicity from the death of somebody he barely knew.

Manti knew that it was over-the-top — his teammates had gotten that sense a long time prior. And now he was in too deep. More and more questions were asked about this fascinating story, and he kept answering them, calling Kekua “the love of his life”, even though he was digging a deeper and deeper hole for himself. And it didn’t help that his family, and specifically his father, Brian Te’o, was also talking about the incident, or lying as it appears.

What a tangled web we weave...

At all ? How do you know this ? Yeah, we all know Alabama is great. All I'm saying is you would think knowing you are about to experience more scrutiny than Michael Jackson's physician might weigh on your mental focus a bit.
Well that's why I said "I don't think" rather than "I know". I don't think it affected him because I think he was in on it. None of the stories he tells, his father tells, or Jack Swarbrick tells add up. One says he met her in person, one says he didn't meet her ever, etc. Certainly her supposed death didn't impair his focus against Michigan St.? As I said, I don't think it affected him at all...I think it was a combination of him being overrated and Alabama being really good and just beating him.

If he was duped by this online-only relationship, why didn't he ever ask to Skype or FaceTime so he could see what she actually looked like? When she refused to video chat, that should have been clue 1 for him to dig a little deeper. So either he's a liar, an attention whore, a straight up idiot, or all 3. Either way he doesn't belong in GB.

Just read the Deadspin story. ESPN, CNNSI, Fox Sports, etc. all have been pretty neutral but Deadspin lays it all out there and if their account and timeline is accurate (which I don't doubt it is), there is absolutely no way that T'eo was duped; he had to be in on it. At best, he was duped but still lied to the media to add to his reputation.

This story truly is unbelievable.

Something stinks, no doubt.

Hard to believe this is the first time anyone has lied to the media to add to a reputation.
@adbrandt
Although Te'o draft stock likely not influenced here, could be issue if a team on the clock has he and another player rated evenly.

@adbrandt
A top 10 NFL draft pick investment is between $12-22 million. There will be intense questioning no matter what.

‏@adbrandt
Of course talent rules in player evaluation. However, on-the-clock decisions can sometimes stray with the emotion of the moment.

@adbrandt
It's our nature to be jaded about big-time athletes, but trying to withhold that here. Unsophisticated player v. sophisticated scam.

@adbrandt
I have same ?s about funeral, never meeting, etc. but think we'll hear that every time meeting arranged, scammers would cancel.

@adbrandt
There are tons of questions; issue is whether there the line crossed between being embarrassed and participating in the deception.

@adbrandt
Some of my Te'o reaction is the former agent in me, having seen what chaos can ensue with players and attractive women.
Bill Polian was just giving a complete joke of an interview on saying there is no reason at all to believe anyone should have character concerns with this kid.

He went on to shovel more crap onto anyone's shoes listening stating "100's" of college players are duped every year be it through shady agents, fellow students, etc. He basically tried to spin this as equal to what other players experience every year.

Minor detail: Polians son, works for Notre Dame, and was the chief person involved in bringing T'eo to Notre Dame.

Way to provide an unbiased take ESPN. Your suckage continues to know no bounds.
Looks like ND needs to deflect all the negative press they're getting, they need to send another freshman up in a cherry-picker during a tornado to die trying to tape a practice... or maybe sacrifice another co-ed from near by St Marys college to be a rape toy for the football team... or... Roll Eyes
A liar? I guess it's easy to believe so many anonymous, credible internet sources without waiting to hear what Te'o has to say, or to listen to what Jack Swarbrick has already said for the record.
@RochNYfan Did you read the Deadspin article? They didn't cite any anonymous sources, they put the pieces together. They did a little digging, discovered that the "girlfriend" didn't exist, the pictures were of someone else, the twitter handle belonged to some guy, and then pointed out all the instances where Te'o and his family had actually been untruthful. Like Te'o's father saying that Manti and his "girlfriend" would meet in Hawaii. Like Te'o himself saying they talked on the phone every night until they fell asleep.

Now he's saying it was online only relationship, he was duped, and is a victim. Not buying it. Too many inconsistencies and lies had already been told. He's an attention whore who was trying to build momentum for a Heisman campaign.

Exactly! Someone said Swarbrick is a lawyer. What a. credibility boost. Lawyers are famed for their honesty.
Obviously you are a ND fan/alum, cheers to you, no offense meant personally. Swarbrick is protecting a brand. A brand that has been a flat out joke and overhyped. So when they finally get some decent players and the hype machine running at full tilt to get them a #1 ranking something like this kills the branding and the PR.

It's hardcore, full court press spin. Even if Te'o is a dupe, which doesn't pass the stank hambone test, it's still a major hit.

Yes. Let's ignore the facts because an icky blog that has fun and uses naughty words broke the story. Instead let's trust the guy that has overseen a kid get killed taping practice and covered up 2 of the current football players sexually abusing a girl that ended up committing suicide. That Jack Swarbrick is the essence of moral upstanding and integrity.

Read the Deadspin article. It relies solely on quotes made by Teo and his family (as reported in other publications) and research on the underlying facts. Absolutely no anonymous quotes are relied upon in the article. It's quite an impressive piece considering the state of journalism in this country (especially on the internet). Very unbiased and just lays out the facts. Even if he was duped at some point, there are quotes from Teo and his dad that are flat out lies. There are multiple quotes stating that the two had met on multiple occasions, which contradicts what Teo is now saying. This is not based on anonymous sources; it's based in fact. And no one has come out challenged Deadspins conclusions. I don't know how Teo and Notre Dame dig themselves out of this.
IIRC Deadspin is the one to correctly report and broke the Favre dong/sterger story as well. Many a Favre apologist (otherwise called Viking's fans) weren't willing to believe it either.
I've read the Deadspin article...and it has things that need to be explained, no doubt. But their only evidence pointing to Te'o is an unattributed quote from someone who says he was "80% sure" Te'o was involved. I can't believe Swarbrick would come on so strong in defense of Teo if their investigation did not provide some hard evidence in his support. I think Te'o is a naive, trusting, religious kid who did not know how to turn this off when he realized (Dec 6) that this was a hoax. I don't believe he was complicit, or arranged this to raise his identity. Nothing he has done in four years indicates that type of manipulative behavior, everything he's done is to the contrary.

And yes, admittedly, I am an ND fan. But I am not a blind fan....believe me, I took flack on an ND board for ripping Golden Tate for his arrogance after the Seattle game this year.

As I've said, Teo needs to explain some discrepancies in some of the details, but I am willing to wait to hear what he has to say before I condemn him.
