McCarthy seems to have worn out his welcome in GB so who is on the Timesfour HC short list ?

Brett Favre.
Get one who would keep Pettine as DC and put Gary Kubiak in as OC. Kubes wants to come back as an OC. He has worked for Shanny in SF (Montana, Young) and as OC to Peyton in Denver.....me thinks he could team up with AR in GB.
IMO HC is enough for one job....run the team and the game day decisions. Let the coordinators run the plays.
Gutey's choice.
Joe Lombardi or Bert Farve.
Skip Bayless
From the title of the post, I was hoping they'd already fired MM.

TimesFour is gonna have a collective meltdown if Gute decides to stick with MM for another season....it may melt the server.
Rich Eisen. If not him then Shannon Sharpe

If he brings Sterling along as interpreter I'm in.
Pete Carmichael, OC for Saints. Saints have had 10 (!) three-and-outs all year and one came in today's game vs Eagles. Don't know a darn thing about him, but I think Brees has been pretty successful. Since it would be his first HC job, pair him with Pettine who's been there...
Sounds good, gonna have to wait till after the SB tho....others may be gone by then and if he's the last bullet.....

If they can retain Pettine I like Bruce Arians.
Otherwise take an up and coming guy.

I thought that Arians fell in love with himself & became a media whore....not my kind of coach
Any coach with a last name that starts with âMcâ because the ensuing nicknames will be so much fun!

The pancake is what makes him an offensive genius.

I wouldn't rule out that happening (ducking as everyone here throws stuff at me)
For me it would be a young up and coming coach and not a retread. I also don't think anyone from the college ranks really is all that great. Riley? he is ok but is 2 years at Oklahoma enough to take on being an NFL HC?
Could very well be an obscure coach who's presently not really on anyone's radar, like MM was when TT made the choice.
With Packers head coach Mike McCarthy on the hot seat, the MMQB's Albert Breer explains why Green Bay may have strong interest in New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
"Two years ago, Josh McDaniels was in the (San Francisco 49ers') coaching search until the very end," Breer said during an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub's "Toucher & Rich" on Friday. "And one of the things the Niners were looking at was pairing different people together. When Josh McDaniels was in the running for that Niners job ... the guy who at the time had emerged as the front-runner for the general manager job ... and who had blown the Niners away was a Packers personnel man named Brian Gutekunst, who now is the (Packers') general manager. So, they've done their homework on each other."

I am not a MM hater, but I think that the league has passed him by. I value his time in GB. My take is that he is a great organizer and leader. I like that he supports his lockeroom. I like that he is loyal and yet he is loyal to a fault sometimes and we all know about his hanging on to Capers for too long. I really think that he tries to the best he can. Yet at the same time he is stubborn to a fault as well when it comes to game plans and scheme.
At the beginning of this season I had a lot of hope for this team. But I also saw that OTHER teams had improved as well. (I think that I even posted that someplace) So, the Packers need an innovative coach and play caller. However, I am not sure Rodgers is ready to change his mindset of what HE likes to play. If we get a new HC my hope is that it is someone who can retain MMs ability to organize practice etc and yet still bring in plays that are on the cutting edge of scheme and coach to the players abilities like Pettine has done on defense.

That would allow them to keep MM as head coach. So , are we gonna fire Philbin and hire a new OC? Or is MM done here?

We don't want a McStunt Double!
Of their remaining 6 games, 4 are very winnable. At CHI & MIN would be tough any year.
McCarthy needs to get them to the postseason and they need a deep run. How they get there and how they play once there also factors. They need consistent play, something they've not had all season. Getting there with Rodgers magic is not sustainable and not something you want to count on... which is where they seem to be now.
If McCarthy wants to coach in GB beyond 2018, he needs to coach like it now.

I like the idea of Dave Toub or Dan Campbell, but you have to invest in great coordinators. Both guys, much like John Harbaugh, would instill the right mindset in the team, but mindset is just one aspect that needs to improve. Joe Lombardi should be a hot OC commodity this year.
Bruce Arians would be great IMO, I would worry about Arians age and health though.
Matt LaFleur is a guy you want to catch early before everyone else IMO, like Matt Nagy. He may not be ready NOW, but it could pay dividends when he grows into the position. Robert Saleh is another guy like LaFleur that you want to catch on the upswing...the 49ers are still rebuilding and have had injuries, so results are skewed for them IMO, but he's got the Seattle pedigree and his players seem to really believe in him.
Nagy is the latest wunderkind but he was handed a pretty good variety of talented pieces to play with for that offense. Take away Cohen and Gabriel and that O looks a lot different. GB needs more playmakers on O if you want run an offense like that. NO is more similar with their roster to what we currently have.

I feel the same way you do. I am definately not a MM hater but I think the time may have come to make the change. I struggled with the thought of letting him go because he has been very successful in his time in GB but I slowly coming around to thinking like you do its just time.
I of course have zero insight in to what is going on at 1265 but I would have to wonder if the front office would at least run some names by #12 first. I don't personnally think players should have much input in to decisions like this but #12 is a guy who may deserve that.
I know I may be in the minority but I am thinking maybe this time they should go with a defensively minded coach. You could hire a good OC to work with Aaron and still keep Pettine
PackerPatrick posted:However, I am not sure Rodgers is ready to change his mindset of what HE likes to play.
This is why I want McDaniels and not Riley. He walks into the door with instant credibility. He has gameplanned with Tom Brady and won over and over again. If there is any candidate out there that can tell Aaron, you have to change, it's McDaniels.

Unless Gute plans on diversifying the talent on O better than it has been since 2014, you almost have to consult with 12. He is currently the vast majority of the offense outside of 17 and 33.
I'm with others on the board, I'm not an MM hater, sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side. The Pack are 4-5-1, with some bad calls, and some poor play so far this year, but they have also been competitive in every fame. IMO, MM hasn't lost the team, and they are a couple of breaks away from being 6-4/7-3? MM is signed through 2019, and I think he should get the chance to coach and deserves that chance, to coach the team next year.
I think it will be difficult to find a new coach, and keeping Pettine. I think keeping Pettine is imperative. He's redesigned the Def, lots of young playmakers on that side of the ball, don't have those guys have to learn a new system next year.
The offense is stacked too, if MVS and EQB continue to improve over the next year or 2. The real question of bringing in a new coach, is time to learn a new system, a year or two? Now, AR's 6 year contract extension, is down to 3-4 years, after bringing in the new coach.
I think MM stays through next year, Gute drafts a QB the year after, and a new coach will be brought into mold AR's successor, in 2-3 years.
I don't think you have to run it by Rodgers, but I think finding the personality that will work with Rodgers is key. Say what you want about MM, but he's professional and sets his expectations. He doesn't badmouth, he always backs his players and coaches, and he keeps all issues internal. I think Rodgers respects that professionalism and he seems to have that expectation of professionalism from everyone he works with.
Here is my biggest concern with McDaniels:
Basically, McDaniels thought he was bullet-proof as the former protÃĐgÃĐ of an actual living legend, and that mentality ultimately got him burned. People donât really remember this but the last straw that got McDaniels fired in Denver was after the team was caught cheating in their London game against the 49ers, filming their walkthrough. That was something McDaniels and the Patriots had previously been penalized for.
...
âThe biggest issue with Josh McDanielsâ first go-round as an NFL head coach came down to power. Denver Owner Pat Bowlen gave McDaniels executive/personnel authority, which was too much for the inexperienced and immature coach.
McDanielsâ first order of business was to explore a trade for Denverâs former first round pick, Jay Cutler, who was coming off a Pro Bowl season in 2009. Cutler caught wind of the shenanigans, and the relationship with McDaniels and the Broncos deteriorated rapidly. Cutler was shipped to Chicago in exchange for a couple of first round picks, and quarterback Kyle Orton.
Alas, McDaniels squandered those picks, and the Kyle Orton experiment failed miserably in Denver. The franchise paid for McDanielsâ mistakes. During his tenure as head coach, McDaniels alienated every player in the locker room and most of his coaching staff, to the point that nobody was willing to fight for him.
By 2010, McDanielsâ second and final season, his message and vision had ultimately fallen on deaf ears because of how he treated people. My guess is that the heâs matured over the years, and hopefully has learned from his mistakes in Denver.
Any team who hires Josh McDaniels must guard against giving him too much power. There must be checks and balances for McDaniels, and in so doing, it should help him to become a more efficient head coach.â
You can give him the benefit of the doubt and say 8 years is definitely enough time to think he's learned and matured. His stunt with the Colts though concerns me that he hasn't learned though. That perhaps he still thinks he's hot shit because he runs the Patriots offense. The current set up with GB, which may change with a new coach, makes me concerned about McDaniels thinking he has as much juice in the organization as Gute. You can't have that kind of paradigm. MM has been here for 10+ years, knows Gute well, and isn't a threat to cause problems, which is why I think we have this current set up...there's no concern MM is going to pull some shit with Gute. McDaniels will have to report to the GM IMO, he can't have free reign to draft Tim Tebows and piss off the starting QB like he did in Denver.
PackerRuss posted:I think MM stays through next year, Gute drafts a QB the year after, and a new coach will be brought into mold AR's successor, in 2-3 years.
Yes I think you're correct. If the team completely tanks though I don't think MM survives. If he's lost the lockerroom even an infusion of talent won't save that.

Unfortunately, they have had a habit of being less competitive at the end of games. At Rams, Pack was 3 and out followed by a Ram FG and followed by the Montgomery kickoff return gaffe. At Patriots, horrible play starting with the Jones fumble. At Seattle, 3 points in the second half and finishing with a 3 and out, Seattle TD, I believe another 3 and out, and finishing with Hawks running out the clock.
Really poor play in the final parts of the last three huge games.
Thread title still makes me hopeful every time I open X4 that MM was sent packing...
Carmichael from NO. If he can do what he's doing now with the 39-year-old Brees, pretty much young or no-name receivers and a good back, why couldn't he recreate it in GB? Think about it: at halftime yesterday, they had only 10 three-and-outs all year. He's doing something right (or maybe it's Payton, but who knows the real truth about any assistant?).
McDaniels in Denver, basically tried to act like Belichick. Bzzzzz - Sorry Hans, wrong guess there, Josh....
I wouldn't expect Josh to take a "reduced role" HC job where he is "handcuffed" with no personnel input & forcing a specific DC on him (Pettine).
Packer org is a mess right now. Until Gutey gets full ability to fire & hire his HC, it will continue to be a mess

In the NFL, most teams are always a few plays away from being 3 games better or three games worse than their record. Good coaches and good teams find ways to win more of the close games than they lose.
The Packers are two big Rodgers-led comebacks from being 2-7-1. They are one Montgomery gaffe and one of the most horrendously coached games of the MM era (Seattle) from being 6-3-1.
They are probably going to win at least four more games the rest of the season - three home games against weak or fading teams at Lambeau (Falcons, Lions, Cardinals) and a game at the Jets.
MM's fate comes down to this next game. Beat Minnesota and they should end up at least 9-6-1 with a chance at the playoffs (with the Bears game in Chicago likely a loss). Lose to Minnesota and it's over as they'd lose the tiebreaker to Minnesota for a wild card spot.

The worry, IMO, is that Carmichael is just like all the assistants we've seen come from GB to be mediocre or worse HCs. That's pretty much what happened with Lombardi and Detroit. I don't think they're doing it with "no name" receivers either, Michael Thomas is a franchise WR in the mold of OBJ and Julio. Ben Watson has been around forever at TE, plus we're seeing high picks Kamara and Smith get involved as well. They're a talented group, Payton and Carmichael aren't making something out of nothing.
