McCarthy: Today is red-zone installation. Installation practices are the toughest of the year.

McCarthy on #Packers WRs: "We want to make sure we have five or six that can play all four positions."

Yes, he does. He refers to himself as "the gunner", much to his wife's amusement.

He spent the weekend with her in Phoenix and he scored many times...but alas, she says it doesn't count and doesn't love him anymore either.

When asked for a comment following Phoenix Mrs Janis said,"Jeff was running around the hotel room without any real sense of direction or plan and somehow his penis ended up in my vagina. So I'm not sure what to make of it"

Fairly heavy dose of screens to James Starks today in a variety of 11-on-11 drills. Looks to be an emphasis once again.

Jason Spriggs with another really good showing in one on ones. Met a bull rush from Nick Perry on Thurs and recovered. Held own again today

First-round pick Kenny Clark won both of his reps in the 1-on-1 pass rushing drill today. He's unbeaten in five..

Hmmmmm.......

It sounds like keeping seven receivers is unlikely for the Packers. "You'd like to think you'd have six receivers coming out of it," coach Mike McCarthy said. "Maybe it will be five. The players will decide that."

Make it bigger?

Abby had a VERY good day. He made 4 or 5 insanely difficult circus catches and his routes all looked crisp. He's making the WR spot hard to figure out. The core 4 are in IMO, Cobb/Nelson/Adams/Monty, and you would assume Abby and Janis have spots pretty much locked down, but Trevor Davis is so intriguing athletically that 6th spot will be tough. Throw in that Janis is arguably the least polished and Abby is very injury prone and would likely miss multiple games with his next concussion, it's a tough call. I didn't see Davis really do anything to make me think he's threatening anyone for a roster spot, but it's clear from the way he runs that he's an exciting athlete in the mold of Desean Jackson...he glides down the field and has another gear that our other receivers don't seemingly have.

I think Ed Williams is likely bound for the PS. He did some good things, made some tough catches and looked sharp. He doesn't offer anything unique right now, but looks worthy of development. Geronimo Allison is the same although he looked less sharp IMO. He's pretty raw but has great size and ability.

Hopefully, he didn't need to out jump Patrick Peterson.

They've stuck with players through tougher slumps (see Mason Crosby). He's also only in year 3, Thompson has held on to lower picks for a longer time. He will make the final 53, even if he gets demoted.

I think it's going to be fascinating to see how the last roster spots are going to be filled.  This team is ridiculously deep at WR and DB and a good player or two likely won't make the cut.  The practice squad might be an option but that's not a safe play either.

He looks about the same as he did last year. He's quick/fast and runs hard, but hasn't made any splash plays from what I've seen. With these limited contact practices it's hard to really judge RBs though as it's hard to tell if they're actually breaking tackles or if the D is letting up. There haven't been a ton of holes between the the Tackles for the backs to run through, it seems like the best plays for RBs have been off-tackle or passes. He's clearly the #3 though, there isn't much competition and I think it's likely he makes the roster.

I would think so, especially since he is a gunner and returner. Abby is only a returner, but offers more versatility on offense as a Slot. McCarthy mentioned he wanted 5 or 6 receivers that knew all the positions, which I thought maybe implied that was one of he more important criteria. That's the one area where we don't know where all the receivers are at? Is Janis playing any Slot? I know Cobb, Abby, and Davis have been and you know Jordy knows all the positions. Monty played some Slot last year I think as did Adams. As I said, tough position group to figure out.

Receiver competition so far

The wide receiver competition rolls along.

Rookie Trevor Davis was the standout the first couple days of training camp. Davante Adams has made a few big plays.

On Saturday, it was Jared Abbrederis’ turn

Sunday's Family Night is sold out but if you can’t go, you won’t have to miss it. As always, Packers Family Night will be broadcast live on FOX 11 and streamed at fox11online.com. Coverage starts at 7 p.m. LFT.

Thompaon definitely favors continuity...he has constantly said a lot of words over the years and said very little. Bob went hard on the issue of staff getting denied interviews like he actually cares, Uncle Ted shut it down pretty well. Thompson and McCarthy aren't perfect and have made mistakes, but GB is a perennial contender and even the "down" years are still winning seasons with playoff births. Even really good GMs like Ozzie Newsome and Kevin Colbert have had true down years recently, Thompson and Belichick keep their teams in the hunt. Playoff losses are frustrating, but just like 2010 proved, all a team needs is the opportunity in the playoffs and anything can happen. We have that chance every year with who we have.
