We may have the worst GM in the league....
Everyone is laughing at this draft. No bueno
Not everyone....
I'm crying
We have a GM who has totally bought into his HC's scheme. Look no further than SF & the Rams, coached by LaFluer's mentors. Of course the problem is that we don't have 4 d-lineman who were First Round draft choices like SF, or the skill people that the Rams had two years ago. Other than Belicheck, coaches schemes are still limited by players talent & I still don't think we have enough to beat the best teams.
@Grave Digger posted:I wonder how badly Joe Bachie’s PED suspension will hurt him. Guy would have easily been a top 50 pick before, wonder if the PED’s had a lot to do with that? If he’s the same guy as before then he could be the steal of the draft. Reminds me a lot of Erik Kendricks, maybe a little Lance Briggs.
Interesting. Bachie went undrafted. Signed with the Saints as UDFA.
It's honestly shocking. Unless his skill is 100% deflated being off the roids I expect he will seriously compete for playing time in a year or two.
Chargers won't be happy.

The Niners defensive line is filled with not just first round picks, but high first round picks.
49ers: Bosa 1st round - 2nd pick (1-2); S. Thomas (1-3); Buckner (1-6); Armstead (1-17)
The real reason the Niners and Rams were competitive was more about talent and less about scheme. The Rams had a cheap QB until last year and could spend heavily on free agency and take a shot. They did and fell short in the Super Bowl because their QB wasn't good enough. The Niners took their shot with a bunch of cheaper talent on the DL and elsewhere on first contracts and fell short in the Super Bowl because their QB didn't make plays when he needed to.
The Packers approach to the draft this year makes a lot more sense if they didn't have Rodgers and just re-upped him with a massive contract. They have too much money tied up in the QB to really do a lot more in free agency after last year's splurge, but they didn't approach the draft as a win now situation.
Their approach seems to be to based on a calculation that last year's record was a fluke. I just don't understand sitting out free agency and basically drafting a bunch of redshirt/part-time guys to add to a 13-3 team. It's almost like they want to be just good enough to keep MLF and Gutey off the hot seat for the next two years, but don't think they are good enough to win it all so they are holding back a lot of the free agency ammunition (instead of restructuring some contracts to add a difference maker).
I tend to agree with that assessment. I think the one thing missing from free agency and the draft is a bonafide run-stopper to pair inside with Kenny Clarke. I can get behind the notion that the free agent wideouts simply weren't worth the money, but a good widebody would have made a lot of sense...

I agree, especially since the "floor" on a free agent wide body is fairly high. As long as you don't expect a guy who can collapse the pocket in a pass rush (and are content with a guy to just occupy blockers so they can't get to the next level), you can find some of those type of guys.
Just a footnote. Niners traded Buckner away and used the pick they got for him to take another RD1 DL, Kinlaw.

If Kinlaw excels as a rookie, I think it will be more because of the talent around him. Is he a good prospect? Yes, but he's in a perfect situation to start as a rookie.
@Grave Digger posted:I think the idea that there are "starting" caliber WRs deep into this draft has been overstated by the media. I think the R1 WRs (Lamb, Jeudy, Ruggs, Jefferson) are clear Day 1 starters. After that I think the next tier (Reagor, Pittman, Higgins, Shenault, Aiyuk, Mims) are maybe not immediate starters, but definitely early contributors. The next tier (Jefferson, Johnson, Peoples-Jones, Gandy-Golden, Hill) aren't early starters, but have starting ability after development. It's a deep draft and it's obviously abnormal to have so many NFL ready WRs, but it's deep more in upside/potential than immediate starter ability IMO. Within the context of GB, if you don't grab one of the Tier 1 players then your opening day #2 is likely Lazard unless you sign a veteran UFA or make a trade.
Great post, Digger, and oddly prophetic...
@Grave Digger posted:I'm going to call this my final mock draft before next week. I don't think this is exactly how it will shake out because I have a feeling we're going to see A LOT of trade downs in the 16-28 area. I think there will be ample opportunities to jump to grab an ILB like Murray or Queen at a lower cost than most years. In case we don't trade up, here are the guys I like:
R1 (30): Ezra Cleveland/OT/Boise St.
-Elite size and RAS. Reminds a lot of Bulaga coming out. Should compete at RT immediately and be insurance in case something doesn't get worked out with Bakhtiari's contract (unlikely).R2 (62): Devin Duvernay/WR/Texas
-Outstanding speed (4.39) and versatility. Football IQ to find holes in zone and has very reliable hands. Very productive and reliable Slot receiver. Should step in immediately ala Randall Cobb in 2011.R3 (94): AJ Dillon/RB/Boston College
-Big, strong, explosive and extremely productive back to potential take over if Jamal Williams walks. Reliable runner and receiver, perfect complement for Aaron Jones.R4 (136): Darrion Daniels/NT/Nebraska
-Massive NT with athleticism. Plays hard, doesn't get driven back, looks like a quality developmental guy to help stuff the run.R5 (175): Joe Bachie/ILB/Michigan St.
-Great all around ILB. Incredibly instinctive, no hesitation, hard hitter. Not elite in coverage, but will be a huge upgrade over Martinez. Stock down due to PED violation.R6 (192): Joe Reed/WR/Virginia
-Developmental slot/gadget player similar to Deebo Samuel. Intriguing skill set and undervalued due to WR class depth.R6 (208): Jon Runyan/OT/Michigan
-Unspectacular looking yet very effective RT prospect. Looks idea for our blocking scheme. Good bloodlines.R6 (209): Javelin Guidry/CB/Utah
-Elite speed (sub 4.4) and confidence in coverage. Undersized, but could be a ST weapon.R7 (236): Stephen Sullivan/TE/LSU
-Underused and raw, but intriguing size and skill set.R7 (242): Geno Stone/S/Iowa
-Undersized and doesn't have elite RAS, but great instincts and nose for the ball. Looks like a core STs guy.
Hey! You got two of these picks right! The round for Dillon may be off, but we know why...☺️
...and you had Runyan in the 6th...
@Music City posted:I’m all for adding a game breaker, but I think I’d rather see a serious investment in the running game. Would love Taylor and/or Biadasz. Can’t rule out RB, can’t rule out interior.
Of the top 10 rushing teams, 9 had more than 2000 yards rushing and 7 of those were playoff teams. The offense was middle of the road in drives, plays- push all those numbers into the top 10 and give Rodgers more chances. Best defense is a better offense these days...
Your wish came true!

Wish he had been right on Geno Stone, too. Great kid, what he lacks in skill he makes up for with smarts and hustle. Played qb and db in high school, which explains a nose for the ball.
2017 draft class fifth-year options for top 5 picks:

1. Browns DE Myles Garrett: ✅
2. Bears QB Mitch Trubisky: ❌
3. 49ers DL Solomon Thomas: ❌

It’s hard to find a sure thing in the draft.
Great illustration that when it comes to the draft nobody really knows.
Bengals declining option on WR John Ross as well. He was a top ten pick.

So you're telling me all the X4 pissing & moaning since the recent draft was likely a waste of time?

Fournette is interesting. He’s looked really good at times, but also had some injuries as they rode him hard early IIRC. Davis has been decent, but not worth the escalator.
Does that mean we should all just R-E-L-A-X? ☺️
I'm just fine with that.
I feel like we can run the table.

And the Vikings. They passed on Love TWICE. They made the same exact mistake 15 years ago - but that is for another thread.
More pylon cam please.
I'll just say this. I could be wrong, but I think Lazard has a big year. IF we have a year.
In this offense, I think you're right.
Some interesting draft history...The Colts take Marshall Faulk instead of a QB...☺️
I have a good feeling about Lazard this year. I like how he carries himself, how he uses his body for position, and how he uses his hands to catch. Yes, he's not the fastest guy out there, but if I need someone who is sure-handed to out-jump a DB for a third-down conversion or a TD, I'm going Lizard.
Yeah, Lazard was money on third down last year and don't think Arod doesn't remember that.
Haters Guide to the 2020 NFL Draft.
Fro the guy who did the Vikings "Legacy of Failure" among others.
Its been awhile since the draft now, and I've been harboring this thought on the "No WR drafted" idea for some time--and it wants out
It seems like every year we have a rookie WR, the stock storyline is that we can't expect much in his rookie years because it takes so long to learn the offense, and especially to learn all the details and expectations from Rodgers. And that is with a normal offseason
This year, there will not be any OTA's, minicamps, and at best an abbreviated training camp and preseason. Would a pick on a WR this year really have been any more useful than those picks they did take? Could it be that the brain trust in Green Bay was thinking this through to that degree, and decided this was not the year for a WR despite the raw talent reportedly there?
It could be they have a plan. On the other hand, they could all be chuckleheads, who knows. Just my 2 cents
Been a while since last year’s draft. Still don’t like the Gary pick.
Not taking a WR, but taking a RB in the second round and a TE / H back two rounds earlier than he was projected is a clear indication that this draft was all about converting the offensive roster to players who LaFleur deems as "fitting his scheme". In addition, the philosophy that Gute seemed to employ in the last two drafts was "player development and free agency is for the present and the draft is for the future".
