I don't think he is subject to waivers since he's vested. He's a UFA.
I didn't realize he was in the league that long.
Smith isn't being "waived", he's supposed to be outright released tomorrow if Dallas can't swing a trade.
What's the best draft pick you'd be willing to give up, assuming Dallas would eat the majority of his contract?
The Dallas Cowboys released linebacker Jaylon Smith, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
We all know Schefter is never rong.
Do it!! We have Summers seeing a decent amount of snaps right now. Thatβs not good.
Yea. Gotta go get Smith if thereβs mutual interest.
I donβt know enough about the guy at this stage in his career as to whether heβd be an upgrade. I think we all naturally assume he would be given his past accomplishments and how badly GBβs current LBβs blow ass, but that doesnβt mean much. See Snacks Harrison last year. Iβm still trying to sell that jersey on eBayβ¦..
Could also be an overt attempt by MM to derail GBβs season by injecting a garbage player into their locker room should the team bite and sign him.

Stephon Gilmore is being released by Patriots. I doubt Packers have the money to sign him. Would help the loss of Jaire tho.

Just read somewhere that the Bucs may be interested in him. What kind of accounting system do the Bucs use for their salary cap? Seems like every free agent is in play for them. Gilmore will want $$$ and apparently is nursing a quad injury. He might not be 100% all season.
He wants a long term big money deal and we don't have cap for that. The better option was Sherman to plug a hole this year.
And it doesn't fix the D-line.
Is Tramon Williams available?

The one that realizes that this is no longer 2008 and "salary cap hell" is an overblown issue that is little more than a convenient excuse for GMs and owners to save money.

This. Last year, David Bakh said in an interview "if a team, any NFL team, really wants to keep or sign a guy, they will figure out how to do it".
And he's right. See also teams like KC who's done that for years.

This probably means that Gilmore's agent wants it out there that he really wants to play for the Packers so he can convince the team he eventually signs with to up their offer.

But I thought AR is too expensive to build and keep a good team around?

He is right, thereβs always a lever to pull because the cap is always going up. 2020 cap going down screwed up a ton of contracts and long term planning. GB wonβt be in βhellβ in β22, but the team will certainly have a different lookβ¦some combination of Rodgers, ZSmith, and PSmith will all definitively be gone or extended long term which will basically solve the cap crisis. There are some other moves that will shore up the issues, but there will certainly be roster turnover and light activity in FA.

You mean the accounting system that realizes you have a once in a lifetime talent at QB and you can win multiple Super Bowls if you keep stocking the team with solid talent around said QB?
The accounting system that can clear a lot of room in a hurry and rebuild a team in a couple/few years if you really believe in your new young HC and your drafting abilities?
That accounting system?
Forgot about Bedard for a minute. Seemed like a total prick when he was on the GB beat, always stirring the pot. I would say this definitely means Gilmore is going to Tampaβ¦no agent is feeding the real plans to reports like this.
Gilmore's agent, Jason Chayut, continues to be in complete control of this situation ... the guy knows how to work his leverage.

Latest league thinking: No trade, sign with Packers.
Clock ticking.
Gilmore traded to carolina...
This is my question. If you sign Gilmore and after Jaire comes back you're looking at those two along with Stokes likely playing more slot. You have Amos and Savage (who needs to be cut loose IMO). Pretty damn good backfield.
If Campbell keeps performing at a high level and they get that turd Summers off the field, what are the chances we see legit cover sacks from this front line? Keke is showing something here and there. Who the fuck knows about Gary. P is bouncing back but I don't think he'll put up the numbers he did in his first year.
Wouldn't it be reasonable to pick up a vet DT or OLB that has enough left in the tank to bump the pressure of the front 7? That may be enough to get the Packers over the hump.
Shit, even King has to have some trade value at this point.
Im sure as hell am not holding my breath with him coming here. We've been down the road of "kick the tires" then "get back in the car and leave" far too often.
But if you are truly all in for 2021, then this is the move you make. And you do it regardless of what 23's status is. Gilmore may not be what he was 5 years ago, but he's a better option then King. Who still can't stay healthy.

Of course.

So much for any talk of him going to the #Packers. Green Bay has roughly $7.1M in cap room and it would have cost them $7M to obtain Gilmore in a trade. They are running out of guys to restructure, so that could have been a factor. https://t.co/14fRULURDE
β Tom Silverstein (@TomSilverstein) October 6, 2021
Probably what he was hoping for all along, he's from the Charlotte area. Lives down the street from Panthers GM. Unless GB offered an outrageous trade, I have a hunch getting to Carolina was probably always going to be the plan. Disappointing, but this probably wasn't something GB would have been able to swing.
The other factor with Gilmore is whether the #Panthers agreed to extend his contract. The #Panthers might have been the only team willing to burn up cap space on an extension. https://t.co/TAXmQzXrX1
