We are officially in Cap Hell for 2022

https://packerswire.usatoday.c...-salary-cap-ceiling/

I think the Packers were widely considered to be ahead of the curve when it came to salary cap management throughout the 90's and 00's, and Balls was supposed to be 'the guru'.
I'm a bit surprised that we've had some trouble coming into this year. Perhaps I shouldn't be, with all the variables affecting the cap over the last few years; mega-contracts (thanks to assholes like Jerruh whoring up the market), poor ROI from draft picks, FA acquisitions... Then came the curveball from cap reduction.

In any case, it's likely both our roster and cap will look much different next year.

Billy Turner and Preston Smith account for $28M. Add in Dean Lowery’s $8M and most of the problems they have with the 2022 cap are tied to three players who are probably not on the roster in 2022. I don’t think they are in trouble at all. The extensions needed to keep certain key players will be absorbed in 2023 when they’re already $100M below the 2022 cap. I’m pretty sure they can figure this out without gutting the roster.

From Andrew Brandt's GREAT weekly email newsletter:

What you don't know about Adam Vinatieri… He was this close to being a Green Bay Packer. Adam became a free agent in 2006, the same year we lost our kicker, Ryan Longwell, in free agency. With our prior relationship and friendship, he agreed to visit Green Bay. At first I thought he was just going to use us to get more money from the Patriots, but he was dead serious about leaving New England. And I thought we had him when I left dinner that night, preparing to announce signing on the greatest kicker in history. The next morning, however, Adam called and consoled me, more as a friend than a Packers employee: "Andrew, Indianapolis called. I gotta go there. Dome!" The Colts offered less than I had, but we could not offer the opportunity to kick in a dome, which Adam thought would extend his career by years which, of course, it did. I often think that if the Colts didn't call, Adam would have been kicking at Lambeau Field and we would have never drafted Mason Crosby. This is how things happen more often than you know.

19  Hours into June 1st and no earth shattering news about our QB. What a letdown.

Almost like waiting for the trade in the NFL draft trade America was collectively so sure the Packers would do (pick one, there were plenty to chose from).  Or waiting for that first round WR.  Or the trade of AR to the Broncos.  Or ......., forget it - it won't happen anyway.

Good move signing Bab Tanyan this way...

Big Bod Bab?

I've always liked KJ Wright.  He's been very under appreciated by the national media, barely getting a mention with Wagner, Sherman, Chancellor and Thomas in the spotlight.  But he's damn good.  I am optimistic about Barnes and Martin but this year is clearly turning into an "all in" moment, so I say go get Wright and shore up ILB.  It's not the right time to have two young late-round ILBs and hope they make a jump.  Restructure someone and free up $6m and go get him.

Yeah, fuck draft and develop. Go all in. Can KJ even walk?

WTF dude?  Signing a reasonable contract for ILB if he's still serviceable?

Yeah, let a injured 5th rounder and UDFA "develop".  Is there shit for depth?  No.

Lost for years in the shadow of Bobby Wagner, Wright was the only defender in the NFL last season with 10-plus tackles for losses and 10-plus passes defensed. All of Green Bay’s inside linebackers last year combined for 10 tackles for losses and five passes defensed. He’ll turn 32 before training camp.
