This is why I don't believe in PFF.

May be an image of 3 people, people playing football and text that says '11 PFF's Pre-Draft Pre- Draft Power Rankings: 1. 1-Chiefs 2-49ers 2- 3- Ravens -Cowboys 5-Eagles Texans, Dolphins, Lions, Bengals & Bills round out the top-10. GBP DAILY'

Power rankings are about as useful as my ex wife.  Pretty much good for nothing.

I am honestly starting to believe that it is a contractual requirement for anyone covering the NFL has to somehow slobber all over Dallas.  Its definitely mandatory on ESPN.

Not yet and it can't come soon enough.  But, I am already preparing for the commercial break when the Packers pick.

They even broke for commercials or just ended the show because they ran out of time on XM 88 during their mock drafts. Jim Miller is babbling on about the Cowboys pick, " Well Pat, looks like we're out of time!"

Kevin Costner approves.

I had a dream. Gutey traded away the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd picks, ending up with 33 total picks including 8 straight picks. They got tired of saying Green Bay is on the clock and a commercial fest broke out.

Or the Chiefs.

The only safety I'm OK with them taking in R1 is DeJean...

Dejean is a corner who is capable of playing safety. But he rarely does because IA plays an almost exclusive zone. IA coaches are smart; they know they can't recruit the 5* corners ... those guys go to the SEC or to OSU, PSU, MI in the B10. So they go after  (and get) the 3* and occasional 4* dbs ... still great athletes but not the elite. Also, the IA coaches know their 3* d-backs can't go one-on-one with the 5* receivers of OSU, PSU, MI. It's why IA plays tough, stop the run defense and play zone on the back end. It's great strategy because, talent wise, they can't  hang with the big boys, but play good defense and even better special teams and they beat all but the big boys. The downside of that strategy is they have played only once or twice in the B10 championship game. Still, almost every season is a success.

I believe Gutey is going to move up to draft the OL or Defensive back he wants. Mims or Mitchell is the pick if he moves up, Barton if he stays at 25

Gutey needs to check his ego at the door. His drafts are spectacular when he has lots of picks and quite a bit poorer when he has only a few picks. He is not alone among GMs.

I just hope he does not try to get too cute with picks this year based on the positive results from the past couple years. Stay true to the board and don't try to manufacture something based on a hunch that isn't there. If that made any sense?

This is my fear, too.

Good stuff Badgeman, thx

Here's an interesting  write- up on DeJeans' numbers from his pro day vs combine CBs

" Let's look at the total combination: if you look at the total number of players at the 2024 combine that

  • weighed 200 or more
  • ran <= 4.43 in the 40
  • jumped at least 38.5 in the vert
  • jumped at least 10'4" in the broad jump

The list is 4 players.  Isaac Guerendo, Xavier Legette, Adonai Mitchell, and Brian Thomas - 3 receivers and a RB.  So exactly zero DBs at the combine put up the exact combo of explosiveness and size DeJean did."

Is that an elite athlete ? Probably, but we need more info

He didn't do the agility testing and that's super important for a DB - so we don't have the full picture. And the agility numbers are where people have the biggest concerns as far as playing CB. But the speed & explosion numbers are certainly in the realm of an elite athlete and combined with top end instincts can make for a successful transition to the NFL.

There is no denying DeJean's athleticism. One thing I didnt't mention earlier is the IA dbacks and linebackers are sure tacklers. Dejean will have no fear run blitzing off the corner to take on a running back or dealing with a receiver. With the state of tackling , or lack thereof, in todays NFL, Dejean will be a breath of fresh air.

To paraphrase, hopefully he doesn't get tired of completing the easy pass.

If this turned out to be true then every team would be out of cap hell next year due to the radical increase of the salary cap due to the league revenue from all those extra commercials.

A sure tackler? I am all in for a guy who can bring actual tackling to this defense.

I also think Gute moves up in the 1st round. I think he goes after a top OL or a top CB. Alt or Fuaga are the OTs and Barton is the OG/C I'd look for. Terrion Arnold and Quinyon Mitchell are the CBs worthy of a move up. Maybe DeJean. Maybe.  How far up Gute goes, is all dependent on the amount of draft capital he is willing to spend.

“Grey Poupon” Cooper is boom or bust IMO.  I don’t see a middle ground where he is league average.  Gute doesn’t shy away from these types.  Gary and LVN.

I thought the same thing of Jabril Peppers coming into the league.  Haven't checked lately but he seems to be a very average player in the NFL.

You can't hit a home run if you don't swing for the fences.

Patriots don't fully trust Eliot yet. "Collaborative effort" If they want to win again, you have to let him drive the Lamborghini.

How about an outside the box strategy? Intercept Deacon Hill in the transfer portal - not hard to intercept this guy, let's be honest.

Give him 1 to 1 1/2 seasons to bulk up a little and put him at Guard or Center. Could be Love's C for the next 12 seasons.

My last, final, ultimate, presumptive '24 mock...

As expected, the blue-chippers were off the board, so I traded down and nabbed Morgan at #30. Rather than keep trading down and landing a crap ton of picks, I tried to find the best fits along the way, so PFF's grades are not very complimentary, but their grading system sucks, anyway...lol

I simply took the guys I would like to see on the team. I think I meant to draft Myles Cole (EDGE) at #169, but forgot... I already had drafted Carter for the D-Line.

That's rather presumptuous of them.  I'd give them the silent treatment for a few more hours.

One of the more interesting story lines for me tonight is what MIN is going to do.  They can't come out of this draft with a QB and they have two RD1 picks.  Should be fun to watch them fumble the bag.
