If the season started tomorrow, Capers would be forced to move Matthews inside full time. He then would hope that a greenhorn like Carl Bradford, Nate Palmer or Joe Thomas played well enough that he could go back to lining Matthews up outside in base situations.

what a worthless bit of interjection in that panic article.  umm, Tom, we know when the season starts and it's not tomorrow.

I don't see Ted going out and signing any free agent inside linebacker now.  Not only would that guy cost Ted cap space, but it might subtract one of the compensatory picks that the Packers would get for Williams or House.  It's shaping up as a first round pick + Barrington + Bradford and that won't be good enough.  On the other hand Matthews + first round pick + Barrington + Bradford would probably be good enough provided the rookie can step in a play right away.  There is always a chance that a decent inside linebacker will get cut after a rookie draft pick pushes a veteran player off the roster, maybe Ted can land a veteran after the draft.  If it doesn't happen then Matthews is spending a big bulk of time playing ILB next year, I just don't see any way around it.  With Peppers, Neal, Perry, Elliott + a possible draft pick, they still should be OK at OLB.

I agree. We also have Mulumba who was raw but talented in the past at OLB

Yeah it totally sucks that the roster is 100% set today and won't have any changes when the season in 5 months....oh wait.  To quote our franchise QB: R-E-L-A-X.  There's still a few free agents out there and the draft.  The safety position was a mess at this time last year and now it may be the strength of the defense.  If we're looking at the same ILBs when training camp comes along, yeah I'll be worried.  But hard to get worked up on March 24th.

Yeah the "if the season started today" is a lame scenario. This will always come up at this time of year when Thompson doesn't sign any/many outside FA's. He will double down on ILBs in the draft so we will have more bodies than just Barrington and Thomas back there. I think he will also bring in a vet ILB after the draft just as insurance. Probably won't be a starting caliber ILB, but I think he waits until the players are a little more desperate for a team.

This...

Along the lines of "if the Romans had F-16's, we'd all be speaking Latin."

The fact is, there will be a draft, there will be impact guys drafted, there will be busts drafted, there will be OTA's and training camp, there will be guys injured for the season, there will be guys stepping up and starting that are unexpected to, there will be blown calls, there will be miracle plays...it's all part of it. You cannot possibly prevent every bad scenario that can happen. These people that subscribe to doomsday scenarios are the same ones who say TT lucked his way into Aaron Rodgers, Corey Lindsley, etc.

As much as people b*tch about TT and MM, there are a lot of fan bases out there who would trade theirs for ours in a heartbeat. Are they the best tandem ever? No, but they are certainly in the conversation with the Patriots for best tandem in the last decade.

And Linsley is a great example of what we're getting at.  This time last year, media, fans, etc. were all over TT for the lack of a proven option at center when letting EDS walk.  I remember the words "irresponsible" and "4th center in 4 years" being uttered at the thought of letting an average (at best) center in EDS walk, with only an unproven player in Tretter set to take his place.  Then a 5th round pick comes in and gives this team the best option at center they've had since Mike Flanagan.  The freak out over the center position became a rock with a lowly 5th round pick.

I'm not against criticizing TT.  I sure did last year when it came to the ILB position and I will again if TT does nothing to upgrade it between now training camp.  But TT almost NEVER participates in free agency so this is not a surprise.  He'll do his damage in the draft, just like he does EVERY YEAR.

easy there big guy,

The Patriots are the bestest ever at everything in the history of anything.

I'm not certain, but they might have actually invented winning in football.

Before the beloved Pats came along, teams just stood around scowling at each other and hurling girly insults. When the league was founded in 2001, the Pats were already the premier franchise and nothing has changed since then.

its ok to like the try-hard Packers, but let's not get crazy with the comparisons

There has been at least one gaping hole on the roster the past three years. 2014 ILBer. 2013 Safety and backup QB. 2012 LT, RB, and Center (until EDS was allowed to replace Saturday). 2015 candidates look to be ILBer (again), CB, and DLine (some think TE).

Let's hope TT hits some home runs in the draft like he did last year to plug the holes.

He could go the Julius Peppers route, and said so himself in that article.

"We're still doing our work, our due diligence," Thompson said. "You never know what's going to (happen). Things change around the league because teams make decisions to go in a certain direction and then all of a sudden a player might come out of that team that you didn't normally suspect that to be the case.

I would argue ILB has been a NEED since 2011. So was Safety. So was WR last year.

Somehow seem to notice TT addressing these NEEDS on a yearly basis. Probably because my glass is half full without donning the G&G glasses.

Look at the reality, WR was a need in 2014, TT drafted 3. OMG, Safety was also a need, TT drafted one that may just end up being a perennial pro-bowler.

This team came within a monu"mental" meltdown of participating in the SB just 2 months ago. I think TT is doing just fine addressing our needs.

I guess he knows what he has already on the roster may just be better and have more upside that the "NAMES" everyone always seem to want to throw money at.

I am glad we have a SB contending team EVERY year, AND we are $21,000,000 UNDER the cap at this very moment. how many teams can claim these facts?

I would say that TT is doing an outstanding job keeping our beloved Packers competitive right now and for the foreseeable future.

only my .02 Cents..

No offense cuqui, but haven't you ever heard Billy B or Tom Brady talk about other teams' players or coaches before?

All they do is overpraise other players and coaches to the point it has become a kind of joke. That kind of statement is exactly typical of Billy B.

And who was the coach of the Jets that fine day ?

No other than Belichick's former right- hand man Eric Mangini;  He knew exactly how it worked and used it to his advantage too.

But when BB cheated against Mangini, that's when Mangini outed BB to the league and laid out how they did it.

Great TT quote from an ESPN article:

"There's always the unknowns," Thompson said. "And there's always, 'We think this, but we're not certain about this,' and I understand that. But that's just part of the personnel business. You have to keep marching forward. You have to keep going, and you can't worry about every little bump in the road. You can't worry yourself to death [and say], 'Oh woe is me, what are we going to do about this, what are we going to do about that?'"

I'm all for moving on from him but couldn't argue if the Packers brought him back on a 1 year, 2 million dollar deal or something like that.  There really doesn't appear to be any other good options in terms of free agency (in this case meaning players released by other teams), so if the Packers don't get locked into a multi-year deal they might as well roll the dice with Raji.  Raji/Guion/Pennel band-aids the position well enough (assuming Guion doesn't get suspended) where big Ted could wait and address nose guard during the 2016 off-season.

The sad thing is this guy probably could be a monster if someone could light a fire under his ass.  Is that Raji's problem or the coaching staff's problem?  All I know is this guy should be way better than he has been, he proved that the last half of 2010.

Stick to stats of guys in undies.

When you're playing a majority of snaps out of position in a scheme that doesn't fit your talents while the defense behind you is horrible you're not going to see a lot of big guys doing back flips by the end of the game.

That's the kind of scheming that falls directly on the Wizard and even then, Toupee was dealing with implementing a 3 pig, block eating line with one and half pigs meant for the job and two candy asses lined up behind.

We could backup AR with QB Kevin Rodgers from Henderson State.  He is big enough at 6-3, 215 and he has good production.  But learning a much more complex offense will be among his biggest problems.  At least we would be replacing a Rodgers with a Rodgers.

I forget about the June 1st cuts.  Was there any last year?  None come to mind.

GB has 57 players signed to the roster.  That leaves 33 spots open.  GB has 10 unsigned FAs.  It is not likely that they will sign all of those.  I see more undrafted free agents coming than the usual 10-12 that GB usually signs.
