2013 - Datone Jones

McCarthy: Rookie camp is about acclimation

By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Green Bay - The following is Packers coach Mike McCarthy's comments after the first rookie orientation camp practice Friday morning:

How long does it take to get over wow factor) Yesterday was a long day. Travel, all the physicals, fitting for equipment, some extended physicals, the night meetings and then the individual meetings. They're put through a lot. The team meeting is about the unique opportunity they have. The statistical part, 30% of NFL is made of free agents, undrafted free agents. Everybody has an opportunity. Today, Mark Murphy talked about his NFL experience. Today, practice was getting everyone acclimated. That's what this is all about.
(On tryout guys) They just have to confirm what the belief is of them as prospects. Hopefully, they jump out and show more. Compare it to the other guys.
(On Rotheram playing center) We tried to sneak that by you. Helps increase his value.
(On Martinez) Tried to watch more the tryout players. Lot of drill work. This is more about acclimation and getting the drill work hot and making sure everyone on the same page.
(On getting bigger) They're as big as we thought they were. It's confirmed.
(On overcoming ACL injuries) First year is a huge hurdle. So much goes into that injury. The second year is a threshold for those guys.
(On bringing in a punter) Just bringing in as much competition as possible. I thought Peter punted well today. We'll see how it goes.
(On QB Joe Callahan) He's the most prolific QB coming out of Division III. Can't every ignore production. We're different in some of the things we do but anyone with that production deserves a chance.
(On Kenny Clark) His background is balance and you saw that today. Very evident on tape.
(On learning offense and defense) They'lll be fine. It's the speed. Anytime you move up a level, it's the speed of the game and strength and balance of each man and the learning. It's never the same for any two people.
(On three-down linebackers) Necessary? Preferred. You do what you have to do. We're ready to play a game today with the men who have been here the past three weeks. Now we'll include the young players we brought in here.
(On QBs) It's really tough. They have to call the play, new footwork, new receivers. Never is clean.

@ByRyanWood: WR Geronimo Allison jumps to catch a blur at #Packers rookie minicamp.

Trick question.  This is actually a video of a ball thrown real time by Matt Flynn.  It's still making its way to Allison.

Going off script for a second:

I was a football loving child fool in 1972. I was too young to understand Vince and Bart and Taylor and Ray and Forrest. But I fully understood Lambeau and Green Bay and Titles.

Watching rookie OTAs I can't imagine what it would be like to put on that jersey and helmet at 21 years old and be given an opportunity to make the team.

The Packers have released #93 DT Josh Boyd, a 5th round pick in 2013. They have also released OT Jeremy Vujnovich, and TE David Grinnage, a recently signed UFA from North Carolina State. Packers GM Ted Thompson signed 2nd round pick OT Jason Spriggs, TE Casey Pierce, plus rookie free agents DT Demetris Anderson, RB Brandon Burks, FB Alstevis Squirewell, and G Cory Tucker following the team's rookie mini camp this weekend in Green Bay - MIKE CLEMENS

Grinnage came in overweight and soft.

Rollins is not flying under the radar.  He's an early pick for a "breakout" player:

Rollins gets some recognition

I think Rollins is better than Randall.   As he gets more pro coaching I think he is going to getting free trips to Hawaii.

Agreed.  But I also have high expectations for Randall.  Both showed tremendous skill and potential last season.  I think we have the makings of one of the best corner tandems in football.

Rollins only limitation would be his deep speed which could relegate him to the slot.  Watching R&R together, Randall seems to be a little more fluid, less wasted motion but that could be from having more years experience at the position than Rollins.  It will be interesting to see where these 2 are after 3 years of nfl coaching/playing.

Shields and Randall boundary corners, Rollins slot

Burnett and Clinton-Dix

Not hard to envision this as a top 3 secondary if they stay healthy. Sammy is very important. I think Ha Ha is taking it to another level this season, All-Pro type.

Thanks Ted

This secondary would have been grea...no, legendary had they kept Jumal Rolle.

Jumal was a budding Super Duper Star for the Texans that the Packers somehow let get slip away.

In related news the Texans released Jumal after 1 year. He was signed by the Ravens and then Jumal tore his Achilles and is out for the year.
